New to this world. My miniature schnauzer, Zeiss, was diagnosed with Cushings and Diabetes all at once. We have been struggling with this for about 6 months. The Cushing's is under control. Sugar values not so much. He did well until about 2 weeks ago and then he got very weak and lethargic. Thought he might have pancreatitis. After two days at vets he was sent home with adjustments on his insulin. He has been losing weight at about 1 pound a week. On a very strick diet that we follow religiously along with the medication schedule. His back legs are very weak and falls easily. His eyes are very cloudy. Does anyone do their diabetic curves at home? I'm sure I could learn to test his glucose at home. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for this forum.

Hi Kelly,

Welcome to you and Zeiss! You'll see I've moved your post from our "Place for Informal Surveys and Polls" thread to our main discussion area here. This way, it'll be easier for our members to reply to you directly, now that you have a thread of your own. One important thing I'm going to do is include a link to our sister form, http://www.k9diabetes.com/forum/, the wonderful people there are very knowledgeable regarding diabetes in dogs, also we do have members that are dealing with both Cushing's along with diabetes and do belong to both forums, this way you have the best of both worlds, so I do urge you to register there too.

Now, if you could share some of Zeiss' medical history with us that will enable us to provide you with our best possible feedback, so here are some questions that I have.

What tests were done that diagnosed Zeiss' Cushing's? What were the symptoms that your boy was displaying that led you or the vet to test for Cushing's in the first place? When was Zeiss'last ACTH stimulation test and could you post those results? Is he being treated with Vetoryl/Trilostane, and if so, what is the dosage? Also with Vetoryl/Trilostane, It is highly recommended that when a cushdog has diabetes that the medication be given twice a day, is this being done?

Well, I believe that I've bombarded you with enough questions and will be looking forward in hearing more about your sweet boy. I sure am sorry for the circumstances that brought you here but so glad you found us and we will help in any way we can.

Hugs, Lori

PS: I've now manually approved your membership so you are all set to go and don't have to worry about the validation email that was sent to you from k9cushings.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Are you doing twice a day dosing for the vetroyl as that as been recommended for dogs with Cushing's.
What was the last ACTH results?
I definitely recommend joining the diabetics forum as they have the most knowledge about diabetes.

Zeiss was drinking lots of water and accidents in the house. Hungry all the time and had a pot belly. He was right away diagnosed with diabetes and other blood work suggested Cushings. Did the ACTH test. The last ACTH was done 8/11. Pre ACTH cortisol 2.8 post 3.5
Zeiss is on Vetoryl 10 mg twice a day. He was also into the vets today for a lump on his back paw. On clindamycin and Rimadyl. Back in a week to check paw and diabetic curve.

Those ACTH stimulation test results are great! Have you had a chance to join our sister forum, http://www.k9diabetes.com/forum/ ? They would definitely be able to tell you how to do those diabetic curves at home.

Lori is correct, those are perfectly controlled numbers for cushings.
Again if you have not, please join out sister site for diabetes, as it could be that a change of type of insulin or dosage might be needed
