Our 9 year old male boxer was diagnosed with Cushings about 9 month's ago. He has excessive thirst and urination and it is very frustrating! We have tried the holistic approach with a strict diet and now on vetoryl but he still isn't getting relief from his symptoms and now we have calcinosis cutis skin condition! UGH are these two things a nightmare or us with an infant crawling around!!! Has that medication worked for anyone? We need help!!!!

Thanks,
Jacqueline

Hi Jacqueline, and welcome! The short answer is, yes, Vetoryl has successfully controlled symptoms for many dogs here. But I'm going to follow up that answer with several questions for you. First, can you tell us more about your boy's overall health history, the symptoms he has been experiencing, and as many specifics as you can about the testing that led to the Cushing's diagnosis.

Additionally, can you tell us how much he weighs, and also what dose of Vetoryl he has taken, starting at the beginning of treatment. Has he had monitoring ACTH blood testing done along the way, in order to establish whether he's on the correct dose of medication? It is very common for dosing changes to become necessary, depending upon the level of cortisol control.

Thanks in advance for answers to these questions, and once again, we're really glad you've found us!

Hi and welcome to you and your pup! Marianne has covered all the critical areas. All the questions are necessary so that we can offer the most accurate guidance. Hopefully, you have gotten copies of your dog's testing history or can easily get them from your vet. It is a good idea to start a file with all the test results should you need to look back at them and/or have your dog seen by a specialist.

Could you tell us how the calcinosis cutis was diagnosed? The only way to get a definitive diagnosis is via a tissue sample evaluation. There are many members here who have had to deal with this difficult skin condition.

Welcome, the leaders here are gonna really be able to help you figure this out. I just wanted to chime in and let you know that we were having tons of issues. After we got the Vetoryl all figured out, the symptoms have been largely under control for over a year now.

Welcome to the club, have faith that this will get straightened out!

Hello and welcome to me too. With cc we have found that the monitoring ACTH needs to have a post result of uder 5.0ug to get good control.

Can you post any monitoring ACTH test results that would help us to give you better feedback.

Hi Jacqueline and welcome,

I'm so sorry to hear the meds aren't working well for your boy. What is his name? I just lost my boxer, Charlotte, a couple of weeks ago and we had to deal with cc there towards the end and it's no fun! I actually kept it controlled fairly well with apricot kernel oil and lavender essential oil. That seemed to stop the itching and keep in manageable.

The others have covered most of the questions I had for you but I don't think you mentioned if your boy had adrenal or pituitary cushings?
