Hi my name is Lenora and I am new to forums so please forgive any mishaps! I have a 7 year old Leonberger who was diagnosed in
November with a large invasive mass on his adrenal gland. It is inoperable as it has invaded a large artery and his stomach. I have him on several pills now as recommended by the holistic vet. My question is does anyone give their dog organic CBD for pets and will it help with slowing down the growth?

Thank You

Hi Lenora,

Welcome to you and your sweet boy! I sure am sorry for the reasons that brought you here but glad you found us.

I only have a moment to post (I'm at work) :( so sorry, but I wanted to stop by and say hi. I`m not sure what " CBD" is, could you share some information about this product?

Hugs, Lori

I don't know of anyone currently giving CBD for their dogs, but a couple people have mentioned it and there was one study in humans where CBD did slow down the growth rate of tumors. I'm not sure if it decreased it or not, but since the mass is inoperable in your dog, I think talking to a holistic vet who would prescribe it for you might be worth considering.
If you do please let us know as it could be beneficial to other pet parents in the same boat. This is a relatively new possibility for treatment of adrenal masses in animals.

Welcome to the forum. I am so very sorry for the reasons that brought you to us. Leonberger dogs are just so beautiful. I have long admired them.

Hi and welcome to you and you baby boy! :)

This is not related to Cushing's so your meaningful input from us will be limited but I will share what little I know - which is next to nothing. CBD oil has limited scientific, peer reviewed study. Most of what you will find on the web is anecdotal at best and hype to get your money at worst. I have cancer myself and a pup with a cyst on one of her adrenal glands. I DID consider using CBD oil for both of us but based on what I could learn, the only affordable oil is from hemp, not true cannabis. I found an oil derived from marijuana and it was $3700 per oz and the dosing for me would have required 3 oz a month. That would have left me with less than $2000 for my babies and I to live on for the whole year after one month of treatment...with no guarantee it would help at all. In addition, this oil needs to be put directly on the tumor not taken internally so it would have little effect at all for my baby, if any. On the flip side, as long as the source you buy the hemp oil from is ethical and the product clean, it can't really hurt as far as I know. BUT I would ask his vet first to make sure.

It will be many years before we know for sure if the oil from cannabis truly has cancer curing properties and before it is available on the market if so proven. But you can bet that you nor I will be able to buy it on the web should that happen. Drug companies like Bayer, Pfizer, and so will have the rights to that plant, lock, stock, and barrel. ;)

I wish I could tell you, "YES! go get some NOW! It will CURE your baby!" but if I truly believed that, my own baby and I would be on it if I could afford it.

Hugs,
Leslie and the gang

Hi Sharlene

Thank You for your response and the welcome! The holistic vet did give me a prescription for the hemp oil in capsule form, from a company called Hemp and Bone. When he prescribed it he suggested I give it to my boy when he started showing signs of discomfort, I have not given him any yet but have it here just in case. There is a lot to read about hemp online some sources say it is a preventative and it may help others do not agree so I thought this may be a forum where someone else may be using it. I am also giving him Licorice root I get from a herbalist which I read will help with the adrenal mass.
The worst thing is not knowing if anything is working he is also on probiotics, an antioxidant, Omega 3, curcumin and a mix of mushrooms (immune support) I was also given a holistic mixture from the vet but my boy absolutely refuses that.
He is a great boy very happy and loving (as all dogs are) but he also hides things well.
The vets were not receptive to me bringing him back and checking on his condition as they have pretty much done all they could for him. So that leaves me like so many others hoping for something that will work.
Again Thank You
Lenora

Hi Leslie

Thank You for your response. I am truly sorry to hear about you and your pup, it must be so stressful looking after yourself and a puppy and I wish you all the best.

My boy was actually not diagnosed with cushings, they said it was a mass that had attached to his adrenal gland and was spreading to other organs.

The holistic vet actually gave me a prescription from a company called Hemp and Bone, I have him on a number of other things as well but was hoping someone on this forum may be using the hemp as a preventative or as a way to slow down the growth, the vet suggested I use it when my boy started showing signs of distress.

I have just signed up for a free online documentary on cancer I do not know if I can share the info on this forum or if you would be interested but it is a nine part series starting on March 21. Hopefully there may be some good information.

Take Care

If it is the series called "The Truth About Cancer" I watched that when I was first diagnosed last year. While some of that was interesting much of it made me mad. I come from a medical family and even tho I am a novice herbalist and completely believe in the power of plants to aid in healing, I found much of that "documentary" to offer false hope, preying on the fears of some of the sickest in the world. I belong to several cancer groups and some members there found much to believe in and pursued some of the suggestions made...but none I kept up with in my cancer groups survived. They all refused traditional treatment via surgery, chemo and/or radiation and instead took coffee enemas, supplements, diet changes, even traveling to Mexico to the Huxley clinic. They all passed sadly. I had hoped their chosen paths would work for them but that proved to be in vain. So watch with an open mind and think critically about everything you see and hear. ;)

Thank you for your kind words for my baby and me...we are both doing quite well. Being lucky, I didn't need chemo or radiation after surgery, and stubborn old broads may have something to do with that :p but we both also have wonderful docs supporting us. I hope you find something to help your sweet baby and can have much more time with him!

Hi Leslie

Yes that is the show I was talking about. Thank You for the info and it is truly regrettable false information is put out there probably just to make money especially when peoples lives are at risk.

Very glad to hear you and your puppy are both doing well.

Hoping to at least have the summer and fall with my boy - so cold here and I do not go out and play or walk with them in this weather - have a terrible problem with falling so will not take the chance.

Again Thank You for the information take good care

I think it would be fine to tell your vet that you are trying different approaches and would like to have a follow up ultrasound every so often to see if there are any changes in the adrenal mass. That actually makes perfect sense to me.

we had mentioned that when we were at the office, picking up the pills he said there was really no point in checking him, there is no cure and the pills and medication was just to help prolong the inevitable.

Hi Harper, I'm so sorry to hear about your dog and Cushing's. My dog Rose has been diagnosed with Cushing's (Adrenal, not Pituitary) just within the last month and is now on Vetoryl. I have purchased CBD products through this company https://www.treatibles.com without a prescription. She has eaten them, but I think it's not helping much. The Vetoryl is helping her reduce the bloated stomach look and she seems to be more at ease. Please re-post and let us know how your baby is doing.
