Hello all. We all have doggy things that end up being used for other purposes, or people things that are being able used by our dogs. Before I toss something that, I try to think of what else I could use it for. With that in mind, thought I would start a thread so we could share our helpful hints....
1. Pee pads - have a couple hundred lying around. Buddy never used them. Rosie did for a short spell as a puppy. Pee pads are great for cleaning up any kind of spill, soaking up liquids and even senior accidents. Quite often someone forgets to put a coffee cup under the brewer, thus a flood. They soak up many times their weight in liquids. I keep some in a kitchen drawer just for that purpose. ;)
2. Silicone feeding matts - There are those non-slip matts to keep a bowl in place and to protect flooring from messy eaters. They do get very cruddy and need to be scrubbed often. If you are one of those lucky doggy parents who need to bathe your dog often, then these matts come in handy. I use two large matts to line the bathtub when I bathe Rosie. They keep her from slipping. I then wash them off and hang to dry. I then have clean silicone matts and a clean dog.
I stand Rosie on the bathroon counter when I groom her, clean her eyes, ears etc. It works well for a small dog. I use one of the silicone matts unde her for grooming. It keeps her from slipping and protects the counter top. If you do this, NEVER TAKE YOU HAND OFF A SMALL DOG ON A COUNTER!! They can easily jump or fall off and injure themselves. If I need something to where I need to turn my back on Rosie, I alway take her off the counter and put her on the floor. To regress, silicone matts are great for that purpose too.
3. Baby Onesies - I did not come up with this hint myself. Someone mentioned it on the forum. Baby onsies make wonderfully soft little doggy shirts. They also cover surgical incisions and skin issues well, often avoiding the need for the dreaded cone of shame. They protect the skin from dogs who bite and scratch (due to allergies) excessively. They can be snapped around the tail to keep that area covered. Sizing can take a little experimentation as to what brand and size works the best for your dog. I buy Rosie's at a baby thrift store for $.99 each. Two for a dollar when they are on sale. :D They are usually like brand-new, because babies grow out of them so quickly. However, our pups never grow out of them! I buy both boys and girls onsies. It's the brand and size I care about. Before I found the thrift store, I bought them in a three pack at Walmart for about $7.00. Still a reasonable option.;)
What helpful hints have you discovered????
