I found you by doing a "search". I have been reading a Facebook support group for Cushings as I have been educating myself about the disease.
Ollie is a 11 year old Plott Hound. He was diagnosed with lymphoma 4 years ago this month. He began chemo asap, went into remission in January and finished chemo that May. Our local gp vet suspected lymphoma, her tests were all inconclusive so she referred us to her favorite oncologist at Blue Pearl Veterinary Specialists in Tampa, Dr Jennifer Coyle. They have been incredible, Ollie loves all of them and adores his visits.
As part of Ollie's ongoing oncology follow up, he visits every 4-8 weeks, has a battery of tests rotating each visit. He has a sonogram twice a year. In May it picked up an enlarged spleen which he had removed the next day...they sliced n diced and tested finding everything was cancer free, no tumors, etc.
He had a follow up scan in late September... everything was AOK except his adrenals were both enlarged. That precipiated(sp?) MORE blood work...Ollie has an extensive battery of tests including urine and blood at each visit, some more extensive every few months. So he had the shorter 2 hr test which came back inconclusive. Last week he had the 8 hour test which came back from Orlando iffy... or "gray" as his Internal Medicine doctor said.
Ollie seems to have read the Merick"s Manual on Cushings and began to develop symptoms. Up until then...his constant panting seemed normal. He has always emptied the water bowls and toilets (no chemical cleaners). BUT he has begun to pace... and to need to urinate every hour or so...and has had 2-3 accidents inside, unheard of in his 11 years. He is hungrier and hungrier.
Ollie tore his ACL last year. It was repaired using laser rather than surgery. He continues to love laser treatments weekly...loves loves loves them. It was his left rear... so when he limped or was a little gimpy, we didn't think alot of it.
BUT after finding the enlarged endocrine glands, and investigating and seeing Internal Medicine wonder, everyone has come to the conclusion that Ollie has Cushings. Dr Mears offered 2 suggestions - low dose meds or waiting another month and repeating blood work. He leans towards meds.
So today I drove into town to pick up a month's worth of VETORYL - 60 . He weighs right at 100 lbs.
My GP vet is relieved this is the drug chosen. She was leary about the others considering not a black and white blood work diagnosis. BUT we started out with the Gold Standard aka sonogram.
I do not have lab results to post. I can get them and want them for my files. We have been watching urine values for months due to high normal protein level which was low normal this month.
Ollie ate Merricks grain free duck kibble and Honest Kitchen mixture of fish and turkey. When he was diagnosed with lymphoma, we dropped the Merricks kibble and fed only HK. In January I dropped the fish and feed only the turkey.- We supplement it with boneless, skinless simmered chicken breasts, chopped n added. Use chunks as treats as well as Honest Kitchen's Pecks. That's it. Limited tightly.
Long saga...sorry.
I belong to a number of dog groups as over years have had disabled/gimpy dog, etc. Have dear friends from those groups. I didn't do any of this for the lymphoma... our oncologist is so incredible and her staff that I had all the support I needed from them, Blue Pearl and our local GP vet. It was and is a community build of expertise, love and kindness.
So here I am...grateful for what I have read here so far. You are positive, informed and supportive.
Yes, I know you would like lab reports. That will take some time, grin. I don't have them right now.
On another note, we just had Rambo kitty's thyroid treated with radioactive isotope 3 weeks ago. Dr Mears is an expert in this procedure. Rambo is doing beautifully !!! Gaining weight, eating and drinking...and the time period that his litter box is radioactive has passed. So if I seem a little quirky it is from over load.

Thank you !

Hi and welcome to you and Ollie! I just have a few minutes to post but had to greet you as we share a wonderful internist in Dr. Mears! :D My Abbie is my second Cush pup and Dr. Mears has been our internist through both adventures. As you are aware, we do like to see test results although, knowing Ollie is being treated by Dr. Mears, I am confident that the proper protocols are being followed.

Thanks for providing such a good overview-- you and Ollie (and Rambo) have really had more than your share of medical adventures.

We are "Blue Pearl Frequent Flyers!"
How wonderful to hear from someone who knows Dr Mears.
I will request the labs. I don't want to until we get a few days of meds under our belt, uh, harness.
We live out in Land o Lakes.
Apology for such a long intro.

Welcome to the Group,

I'm from the other side of the bay in Gulfport. "VETORYL - 60 . He weighs right at 100 lbs." - I have respect already :).

While we're here craving test results would you mind sharing more on:

"Ollie tore his ACL last year. It was repaired using laser rather than surgery. He continues to love laser treatments weekly...loves loves loves them. It was his left rear... so when he limped or was a little gimpy"

I believe my girl has injured (not snapped yet) her CCL and would like to hear more about laser, your results, and costs if you don't mind. Also when you said a little gimpy do you think that's from cushings or the limitations of laser treatment. I'm familiar with surgery, my 10 year old boy just had a TPLO and worked out very well. With my 11 year old 52 lb well manged cush girl I'm exploring all feasible options.

I'm not trying to hijack your thread my thread is "Lolita" if you'd rather reply there.

Thanks - Darrell and Lolita

Welcome to you and Ollie from me, too! You'll find that we love long posts, especially when filled with all the valuable information you've obtained. We'll be watching for those test results and will stand alongside you as you venture this new path. And I wouldn't be too concerned about quirkiness - at least you've got a good reason for it! ;)

Ollie just had breakfast and then his first V for victory capsule!
When Ollie began chemo for lymphoma I didn't "do" forums or support groups because I had total confidence in the expertise of our oncologist. I still do. She and Ollie pulled off a miracle - life expectancy is 6-12 months. I didn't want to be frightened or questioned.
This is different. Treatments have changed drastically, it is so weird.
Our GP vet had a lecture on "V" at a continuing ed class so she is learning, too. We all have supreme confidence in Dr Mears. Our Rambo left his brother and drove to NC for his treatment and will be a FL boy for 2 months. The vets who do this in NC are less experienced.
All of that said, this group is knowledgeable, comforting and supporting. I welcome that.
I know we are going at this diagnosis backwards. It is unusual for a dog to have sonogram twice or more a year to diagnose "on going health' because of lymphoma. Both adrenals being enlarged led to this journey as well as panting and his thirst. Everything else is too subtle.
Knowing one of you shares Dr Mears also increased my comfort level. Our vet is picky about her referrals having practiced here 20 yrs. She knows everyone, grin. Blue Pearl is a great group but for various things, she refers to different vets, some there, somme not, ha. Ollie refers all of HIS dog friends to Blue Pearl - he recommends the office park smells and stroll. There are even duck nests on the ground under bushes from time to time.
Okay, enough. I will try to find my way to the nice lady about laser n acl's now.
I'm glad to have people to walk with us on this journey.

Welcome to the forum, seems you already have a good group who are "in the neighborhood" as they say. yay!

Sarting at a low dose is definitely the way to go and will let them evaluate how Ollie is doing and how he responds without much worry of side effects.

Hopefully this will help him and since he's grey area, might even help right off the bat with the symptoms.

Hi! Just checking to see how Ollie is doing after his first couple of doses -- and how are you doing? We are often so much more stressed than our pups!

Oh, thank goodness for that comment - it might head off symptoms! I have been doubting myself, making myself crazy all day long thinking maybe I should have waited until they were.
Ollie is needier --- but maybe he is feeling better as he hadn't wanted to cuddle for a while. He is drooling a lot --- more than he usually does.
Sometimes he seems a little anxious
Yes, I am making myself sick. He has continued to need to urinate every hour or so...so maybe that's the needy - Mom, let's go out. I'm luring him out with small bits of chicken. He hasn't been as thirsty...there are a couple of water bowls with water, still.
Thank you for this! Chemo didn't scare me like this for him.
Just took him outside - it's 60 and I almost had to "go", too. It's Florida so that's a big temp drop, griN
Thank you

Does Ollie continue to be anxious and needier? We have heard of some dogs becoming needier with a cortisol drop.

You will know more for sure when you do the follow up acth to monitor.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't see this until Thurs night. Was just telling a friend who told me to watch out for day 5 and 6...we are on day 7.
He is needy at about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs after the pill. I sound crazy.
Yesterday was a distracting busy day here.
Just the one episode of vomiting and diarrhea earlier in week.
He doesn't have to urinate as often nor is he drinking like crazy. I am making sure he DOES drink water, tho. He isn't starving but still food motivated. Pickier...
I'm watching his activity level - hard as was:is a lazy hound dog.
As cortisol decreases will his arthritis n discomfort increase??
Am exhausted - will report n participate better tomorrow hopefully. I need a good night's sleep.
Thank you!

Just checking in with you to see how Ollie is doing on medication.
Are you getting any sleep yet?

He is less needy than he has been since starting V but more needy than his usual self.
I am giving him a melatonin 3 mg when he starts whining as well as more attention.
Friday will be 2 wks - he goes in for his "initial blood test" Monday as Dr Mears isn't in this Friday.
His usually 6 wk check with Oncology was good - nothing remarkable, same weight. Little "lumps" node - like are fatty. They didn't do blood because Dr Mears will Mon. Urine unremarkable.
No. I am not sleeping well yet. I am on pins and needles. My husband is here so that is a huge help.
Ollie doesn't have to go out during the night. He sleeps "in" until 8 am or so now. He isn't emptying water bowls like a crazy dog but still drinks well.
He isn't interested in walks. He goes out, does his thing and comes right back in.
I am trying to retrain my thoughts, reactions and not give into fears. I didn't have these fears going through chemo 4 yrs ago.
Thank you for asking!!!! And keeping me on track.
Maybe I need to take a melatonin when I give one to him!!
Our other dog - his little buddy - is back here so that is good for Ollie, too.
No vomiting (except if he drinks too much), no diarrhea...not looking for coolest spots any more.
Dr Mears ok'd zyrtec for allergies for him - his eyes are itching and driving him crazy. Started that yesterday - better.
Thank you

So today was the blood test right? When do you expect results?

Be sure to let us know what the tests show!

I couldn't get back into group. Finally today I got everything to work
1. It is difficult to get lab results from Dr Mears. I asked without results. I don't want to rock the boat so will ask oncology vet in same group to get them for me.
Ollie's results were "perfect" so continue on 60 mg daily and return in 3 months!!!
Now, Ollie fell at the office and was upset for a day. We will do things differently going in thru his favorite Oncology bldg (they connect). The main office has a large number of vets, dogs and confusion.
Now, we have taken 30 days plus 5 more days - 35 days of meds.
Ollie's thirst is now normal. He hold urine through the night. Most days he needs to go out 4-5 times.
He is more alert and happier although his rear legs are still weak, and he stumbles sometimes.
At times he is very needy.
Some days he eats well and other days needs to be coaxed. He needs to be coaxed to do a lot outside.
Saturday he had an off day - wanted to lay in dirt outside. Was restless --- I gave him Pepcid AC, melatonin, Rescue Remedy drops, his Thundershirt and calming music. About dark I moved cat out of kennel and fixed for Ollie. He finally settled down, could see us and slept thru night waking normally.
He had some diarrhea that day BUT he had Merricks canned along with his usual Honest Kitchen. He had some turkey broth, too. Change in food gives him loose stools. Sunday he was normal and has been since.
He visited his GP vet last Wed and today for his usual laser therapy on knees n hips.
His follow-up at Blue Pearl with Dr Coyle n his buddies is in 2 weeks - he will have normal blood and urine tests, exams, etc. They are pleased with his progress.
That's my long winded update!
My older daughter was here for a week at TG - she adopted Ollie n he lived with her for 18 months in Atlanta and us back n forth before staying with us. He adores her so had a lovely time.
I amm becoming much more relaxed about all of this.
So....?:)

Well that sounds like a wonderful update and glad to hear that Ollie is over all doing well. I do wish they told you what the actual numbers are. Would they make a copy of the results if you told them you wanted to keep your own file as Ollie has other vets and if they ask, then you want to be able to tell them any information they need?
Aww, nice that Ollie got to hang out with his buddy, your daughter. I'm sure he was thrilled.
