Hi everyone - have just joined to learn as much as I can for my sweet boy "Jack" who is as yet unconfirmed but has the typical hair loss pattern. He had been treated for 12 months for hypothyroidism but his last blood test the meds had put him way over the normal level. The vet is now convinced it may be Cushing's but is yet to start testing. I live in Australia and have just discovered a place in Canada where you can order a hair testing kit online for $90.00. Has anyone tried this testing method and what are your thoughts on this? Certainly non-invasive and have read how it came about by a research veterinary scientist in Austria. Thanks everyone if you can help.

Hi and welcome to you and Jack!

Regarding the hair analysis test, to the best of my recollection we have had one member that used this type of test. I'm providing a link to a study that was done with this test and the conclusion was that the cortisol levels were higher in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism than in healthy ones but further research is needed: http://www.2ndchance.info/cushings-Corradini2013.pdf

Here, also, a link to the member's thread who used this type of test: www.k9cushings.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8161

If you could share some specifics about his overall health history, his symptoms, and his actual test results, that would be great. With our new members we ask a lot of questions, this is not because we are nosy, instead, it allows us to provide you with our best possible feedback. So here are some questions that I have :)

Could you get copies of all tests that were done on your boy and post any abnormalities that are listed? With respect to the blood chemistry and complete blood count (CBC), you need only post the highs and lows and please include the normal reference ranges. Is he taking any supplements or herbs? Is his urine diluted? Does Jack display any of these common Cushing's symptoms: increased drinking/urinating, a ravenous appetite, pot-bellied appearance, exercise intolerance, and difficulty or unable to go up steps or jump on furniture? Are Jack's thyroid levels within the normal range now?

I sure am sorry for the reasons that brought you here but so glad you found us and we will help in any way we can.

Hugs, Lori

Welcome to you and Jack! I am looking forward to learning more about Jack. Your responses to Lori's questions will help us all guide you through this disease which can be quite overwhelming.

Hello, I'd like to welcome you to the forum too.
I just want to be sure I understand that his thyroid levels are now really high and so they think it is cushings because he isn't responding to the thyroid medication now?
yes do tell us more about your Jack and his symptoms, other than pattern hair loss. It may very well be cushings, but thyroid also can cause many of the same symptoms.
