Our dog was just dx with possible Cushings, has all the symptoms plus high ALK phosphatase results and we will be doing further testing. I would like to know what is recommended to feed a dog with Cushings whether it be commercial or home made etc. thanks brit

Hi Brit, and welcome to the forum!

I'm no dog food expert but I do believe that choosing the right food for our dogs is a personal thing and it should be based on our own research as well as the health challenges our dogs may present.

Having said that, since cushdogs do lose muscle mass I would feed a diet with a moderate amount of good quality protein.

What symptoms is your furbaby displaying? I see you posted that the ALP is elevated so I am assuming a chemistry/CBC blood panel was done? And if so, was anything else marked abnormal?

I'm so glad you found your way here and we will help in any way we can.

Hugs, Lori

The only suggestion I have is something lower in fat than your typical dog food. I learned the hard way (no one told me!) that Cushing's dogs are prone to developing pancreatitis. Lower fat dog food can help in preventing that.

Once TC had his attack of acute pancreatitis (and we almost lost him), I fed Anamaet Lean dog food. I'm lucky that he loved food, any food, so he gobbled it right down.

thnx for responses. This dog belongs to a relative and symptoms are horrible skin problems/thirst etc. Took him to my holistic vet and she did blood work which showed ALP 764 plus Globulin was a little high and apparently further test would be needed to determine if its cushings? My question about dog food is because I make my own but my relative usually buys kibble so am doing research to find best one for this dog's problem and also vet said no grains so not sure which one would be high quality as I don't want to buy some of the junk in bags that I see out there but also need to keep the price reasonable.
