Hi Everyone!

My 10 year old best buddy Jackson has always been in good health up until a few nights ago. We have always only had to see the vet on an annual basis other than for pesky ear infections! However the other night I was sitting on the couch and out of no where Jackson peed right in front of me. I cannot even tell you the last time he had an accident in the house. He will always alert me if he needs to go potty and out he goes! Needless to say I was pretty concerned fairly quickly. I also noticed he was drinking a TON of water but eating normally.. I scheduled a vet appointment for Tuesday morning thinking maybe he had a UTI or something simple. WRONG. I was able to get the vet a urine sample the morning before his appointment. They also did blood work. After the vet I noticed Jackson was very lethargic and just moping around the house. His sad Lab eyes were breaking my heart. I knew something was wrong with my baby.

Today, Wednesday the vet called with the results. There was no sign of infection. His blood sugar was off the charts! She said a normal high range blood sugar level is around 110 and his was 560! She then proceeded to tell me about the elevated levels of cortisol she saw on his blood work results and she mentioned Cushings disease.

After a brief explanation of what it was she told me if I decided to treat I would be looking at $8000 to $10,000 in the first year of treatment. Anything after that statement is a blur. After having a few hours to digest what I was told I started my research. I have read some absolutely awful things and some great success stories.

My main concern is Jackson seems very uncomfortable and restless today. He is noticeabley depressed along with the increased thirst and urination. Luckily I can work from home in emergency situations like this. We have the LDDS test scheduled for Monday which is still a few days away.

The vet said she could not do anything for the high blood sugar levels because any administration of insulin would be pointless if it is in fact Cushings disease. I am reading some complete opposite opinions. I see that most dogs need to stabilize their blood sugar levels before beginning treatment!

I have been keeping a close eye on my best bud. I am concerned between now and Monday his health will continue to deteriorate.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Should I reach out for another opinion? Is waiting a few days with blood sugar up around 500 a safe idea? I am also considering picking up some unflavored pedialyte in the morning to be sure he is staying hydrated.

I do not have copies of his test results as this just all came to light today. 17 hours later I am still reading and reading and reading...

Any suggestions or really anything at this point is so greatly appreciated. I will do anything to make sure my JBaby is taken care of and as comfortable as possible. Seeing him like this is heart wrenching!

Thank you!
Kristin

Hello Kristin, and welcome to you and Jackson. I have only a moment to post right now, but your vet is flat-out wrong about this and I encourage you to seek out a different vet today!!!! No matter what other conditions also exist, lowering elevated glucose is the first priority for any person or animal. Jackson may or may not also have Cushing's, but it is pointless to test for it right now when his glucose is so high since both of the screening blood tests can return "false positives" in the face of other nonadrenal illnesses such as uncontrolled diabetes. And the LDDS is the test that is most likely to be skewed in this way, so it is the poorer diagnostic to be used in this situation, anyway.

We have a sister site that supports owners of diabetic dogs, and I encourage you to register there ASAP. They can give you a lot of help with the diabetic part of things. They are: http://www.k9diabetes.com/forum/

Please do seek out another vet and keep us updated!

Marianne, you have confirmed what I knew in my gut! I am making phone calls right now to other vets in my area. With a family of humans with diabetes l know what havoc it can cause in your body so I would assume our fur babies aren't much different! Especially when his symptoms came on so suddenly and quickly worsened. Thank you I will keep you posted!

Hello and welcome to Jackson and you! (I have a Jackson too - great name! :D) I wish you the best in finding another vet who is well versed in canine diabetes, and soon!

In the meantime, do you have copies of the test results so far? If not, I'd suggest asking for them... and then if you would, please post those values that are high/low along with the reference ranges. That will help us to support you and Jackson the best.

Please do keep us updated on what you find out and how your buddy is doing.

Hi, Kristin -- welcome to you and Jackson! You have received excellent guidance already. It is so tough when the vet in whom you have placed your dog's health gives you mis-information. I am sure you will be able to find a vet who is well versed in diabetes and, hopefully, also in Cushing's. That said, feel free to continue to run by our forum and the diabetes forum any concerns or doubts you have!

Jackson had his second opinion visit today. Sure enough we came home with a prescription for NPH insulin and syringes! She also started him on the Hills WD Prescription dog food. She did some abdominal xrays and everything looked normal. There was nothing about the liver to be concerned about. She said she was pretty certain the high glucose level was causing the spike in his ALP.

I did however get a copy of his labs. Below is what is flagged with the ranges on the right

CBC Standard
MCH 21.5 (21.9-26.1 pg)

Urinalysis
Glucose 3+ (1000 mg/dL)
Result verified by repeat analysis
Non-crystalline debris present

Comprehensive Diagnostic
ALP >2400 (20-150 U/L)
GLU 545 (60-110 mg/dL)
NA+ 133 (138-160 mmol/L)
HEM 0 LIP 2+ ICT 0

Thyroxine (T4)/ Cholesterol Test
CHOL 280 (125-270)

The comfort I felt with this new vet today was a comfort I have never felt with his previous vet.

I am so very very thankful my late night panic research lead me to this forum. You all pushed me to trust my instinct that something wasn't adding up. I am not one to normally question a Doctor or a Veterinarian but in this case the best thing I did was question and educate myself.

Jackson will be heading back to his new doctors office on the 29th of this month where they will do his first glucose curve. I am thinking she may recheck his ALP at that time as well or may wait a little longer until the diabetes is being well managed.

I hope this is our only hurdle during his golden years. As much as I do not want to end up back on here posting another frantic thread I am so very thankful you all were here. I am not sure what would have happened to my poor baby if I didn't end up here.

Thank you again so very much! Off to the K9Diabetes forum. I have some more of that late night reading to do! :D

Oh Kristen, thank goodness!!!! I've been thinking about you guys ever since you posted, and hoping that Jackson would be starting on insulin immediately! You'll be in great hands over on k9diabetes, but please do stop back again to keep updating us. Once you join us, you're family forever! ;) :)

The thing that really scares me is how ill informed your original vet is! Jackson may not even have survived had she allowed him to continue with his glucose so elevated. I simply cannot imagine what she was thinking. :( :( :(

But the important thing is now you have some competent guidance and a plan going forward. Good luck!

Oh that's great news! I'm so relieved, as I too was worried about Jackson. I do hope you keep us informed here, too. As Marianne said, you're family now! :)

We just got through our third dose of insulin and I swear I have my favorite boy back! He is still a little wobbly on his feet but he has done a complete 180 from Wednesday night.

I wish I could hug you all! I am forever grateful and Jackson sends a happy lab tail wag your way! :D:D:D

Wanted to pop in and say hi!

Jackson seems to be on the mend. His glucose level is coming down slowly but surely. The excessive drinking and potty breaks have stopped but he is still pretty sleepy. Poor guy has been through so much!

I wanted to share a picture of my babies! Ella is the collie mix (she is so photogenic its ridiculous) and Jbaby is in the back!

I don't see the pictures. Did you create an album? (Maybe it's not public?)

excellent news that Jackson is responding so well. YAY!!! '

I can't see the photo either. Maybe add it to your album here too?

I added it to my album. I'm clearly not as forum savvy as I thought! LOL

So the new Vet called me today because I had some questions and I asked her about Jackson's legs being so weak. She brought up Cushings! I almost had an instant panic attack. Why are these people so quick to assume it is Cushings?! Leg weakness is a direct symptom of diabetes which we KNOW he has. Ugh!

His levels are still pretty high so I think we are going to up the insulin again this weekend.

What an emotional roller coaster!
