Hi everyone,

Hope you have been having a nice week.

My 10-year-old, 7.2-kg (15.9-lb) lhasa apso named Mika was diagnosed with Cushing's and has been taking vetoryl (trilostane) for a year and half now (19mg/day). Mika also suffers from atopic dermatitis and has been taking cyclosporine (50mg/day). Mika has been having more skin lesions lately. She constantly scratches and licks them.

A vet suspects that cyclosporine might have ceased to be effective and recommended switching to Apoquel (oclacitinib maleate). Mika takes a lot of medications everyday (she has had a PTE, pulmonary thromboembolism. I can provide the full list of medications) and I am not sure whether Vetoryl and Apoquel can be administered together. The vet said that no research has been done on the interaction of Vetoryl and Apoquel and, therefore, I should decide what to do...

I really do not know how to proceed and would appreciate any advice on the matter. Please help me help Mika.

Thank you,

Tania

Hi and welcome to you and Mika!

The first thing I would do is see a dermatologist if you haven't already to make absolutely sure this is not CC - Calcinosis cutis - instead of atopic dermatitis. CC is an uncommon complication with Cushing's and a derm vet can tell you pretty quickly if your baby has this or not. If it truly is atopic dermatitis, as far as I know there is no problem using Apoquel along with Vetoryl (Trilostane). Some of the others may have more info on that that I and I am sure they will be along soon to talk with you.

Hugs,
Leslie and the gang

PS. Here is a link with some pics of CC (they are pretty graphic so fair warning)
