Hi all. So happy we found this site. Our beloved 7 yr old golden doodle has been diagnosed with Cushings. He had the fat pockets on his sides a few months back, and we were assured by our vet they were nothing. We arrived home one night to a bloody mess as one had "popped", but he was no worse for wear. Anyway, soon after, all of a sudden he would drink water like he was never going to drink again. He'd drink over 60 oz in a row...He'd drink his water bowl, his sister's water bowl, and any and every toilet he could find. When it rained, he'd jump on the deck table and lick the water off. We knew something was wrong, but the vet didn't know what. Luckily (I guess), he ate one of my son's baseball batting gloves and was in a little distress. We took him to the emergency room, and they performed surgery to successfully remove it from his abdomen (it had wrapped around some intestinal item). We told the vet there about his drinking (and urinating!) and he immediately ran blood tests.

A few years back we switched vets once we brought home our second dog. The first vet was great but crazy expensive. The new vet was older and more sensitive...but I'm not sure he was the equal. Long story short, we're now back with the old vet.

He's been on Vetoryl now for a month and a half. They started him on low dosage, but it wasn't doing much. A little less drinking, but the urinating in the house continued and his blood work only showed marginal improvement. Today they upped his intake to 90 m/g, twice a day. He's about 90 lbs. Question for the community- do the accidents in the house ever subside?

Hi and welcome to you and your boy!

I have manually approved your membership so now all your posts will be seen right away. Also, please just disregard the validation email that was sent to you from k9cushings.

It would help us a great deal if you could share more information about your boy, in this way we can provide you with our best possible feedback, and we get this information through a ton of questions so here goes some of mine. ;):)

Could you get copies of all tests that were done on your boy and post any abnormalities that are listed? With respect to the blood chemistry and complete blood count (CBC), you need only post the highs and lows and please include the normal reference ranges. What diagnostic test/s for Cushing's were performed and could you post those results? We are especially interested in seeing the results of those monitoring ACTH stimulation tests, so could you post them too? Besides the increased drinking/urinating does your boy display any of these common Cushing's symptoms: a ravenous appetite, skin/hair issues, pot-bellied appearance, exercise intolerance, and difficulty or unable to go up steps or jump on furniture? Does your boy have any underlying illness that he is taking medication for? And if so, what is it and what is the medication? Is he taking any supplements, medications or herbs?

Generally the increased drinking/urination subside about two weeks after starting treatment, however some dogs have what is called renal medullary washout. To simplify things, it means all the stuff (solute) the kidneys need to concentrate urine has been washed out for a very long time so the kidneys will take some time to recover.

Please know we are here to help in any we can so do not hesitate to ask all the questions you want. ;)

Hugs, Lori
