my Jack Russell x Daschund is 17 years old and has been a diabetic and cushing disease sufferer for the last four years. for the last two months he has been going downhill, really slow, not eating on and off, not wanting to walk much. cushings retested, and diabetes, both good, medication wise. last night as I put him on the ground he went all stiff and his head was stuck on the side, this lasted only a minute, think it was a stroke. just at the point where we are deciding his fate, hard when he has good days and likes to hump our legs! anyone elses dog had stroke/s?

Hi and welcome to you and your boy!

You are doing an outstanding job with your boy, Cushing's is hard enough to treat and when diabetes is thrown in, man that can be really difficult to get both under control.

Does your boy have the pituitary type of Cushing's? I'm sorry that I have only a moment to post but wanted to at least welcome you both to the forum.

Hugs, Lori

It could have been a stroke or a seizure perhaps. Was anything off in his blood work? You said Cushing's and diabetes controlled. What about thyroid?
Poor little guy. How is he doing today?

he had full bloods done two months ago and vet said everything was good, same dose of vetoryl, 30mcg. do not know what cushings type he has, our old vet never really gave us any info other than he needs to be on medication for the rest of his life. it is only since he is going downhill that I am finding out more about this disease on the internet! be good if they told us just how horrible it is! we are not giving him anymore blood tests, he has had enough, particularly the last few months. been to the vet today to see if he can give us anything to help with the restless pacing and huffing behaviour he is doing afternoons and nights. Will try that for a few days, but if there is no improvement, we have decided to end his suffering, have to detach myself from what my heart wants and do what is best for him.

he actually had diabetes first and for a few days, he was still drinking heaps and weeing his bed and hyperventilating at night, we went back to the vet and he said he definitely has diabetes, he'll be ok in a few days. We went to another vet after another bad night and he looked at him and said, pot belly, hair loss etc, has he been testing for Cushings? no, so we had tests done and he was positive. The vet said he would have died in the next few days if we hadn't come to him. But never had this terrible disease explained to us. Why don't vets give a leaflet with new diagnosis?? What to expect etc?? instead finding out online, and after it is too late :(( thanks for replies! nice to hear (wrong use of word!) that others are in the same boat.

It would definitely be helpful if even the Dechra brochure was given out to new patients.
This is a link to it. http://www.dechra.us/Admin/Public/Download.aspx?file=Files%2FFiles%2FSupportMaterial Downloads%2Fus%2FUS-046-TEC.pdf

I know that it is way past the time you needed this but just in case you are interested.

It's a rough time when it gets to that point of when to make a decision. Never easy, even when you know it is best. Heart and logic do not always meet exactly in the middle.
