Hi Everyone,

My 9 year old girl was diagnosed with cushings. She is 27 pounds. Started her on 30 mgs of Vetoryl. First few days she was tired and stoned after taking it for the morning and would perk up in the evening. Then after day 5 she was tired all the time. Did ATCH test and baseline showed cortisol was high then after stim it came low. she was also very low energy, eating grass all the time and was not being herself and very withdrawn. Dr. took her off meds for 3 days, did well energy came back and we decided to do 10mg in the am and 10mg at night. First three days, like new energy playful interacted with everyone, day 4 tired and stayed in her hiding spot all day. Called Vet took her in he did full blood panel, said her white cell count was slightly elevated and did ATCH (even though on day 4) and still had cortisol in body but after stim came up high so he wasn't concerned about the meds. Now day 6 she is very tired (yawning all the time) withdrawn again and just wants to sleep. I don't know if it is just a side effect of the medication but I want my girl back how she was the first three days on the meds.

Hello and welcome to you and your little girl! I'm sorry she is reacting poorly right now. It is a relief to be told that her cortisol is technically not dropping too low. Even when that's the case, though, it is still possible for dogs to initially feel "yucky" when their cortisol first drops to lower levels than what they had been accustomed to while under the effects of uncontrolled Cushing's. So it may be the case that she will muscle through the listlessness and end up feeling better after a bit more time on the drug.

However, in order for us to better assess what may be going on, it'll help us a lot to learn specifics about your girl's Cushing's symptoms, diagnosis, and actual monitoring testing numbers to date. So if you'll fill us in a bit more, we can then discuss things further.

Thanks very much in advance,
Marianne

Hello and welcome to the forum from me too.

Did your vet suggest that she might have an infection with the white blood count high? Was a UTI ruled out? What about specific gravity of urine, is it dilute?

If you have tests results and can post anything that is high/low that would be helpful (with the range included).

Can you get actual copies of the ACTH test results and post them here?
