Hi, My 12 yr old cockapoo has had out of control diabetis for 1 and a half yrs.He was just diagnosed with cushings and put on trilostane 15mg twice a day. He weighs 22lbs.He stated trilostane 4 days ago.Today he has hardly drank any water and has slept the whole day and evening.Blood sugars are ok,but I am worried because he is just sleeping.
His LDDS test was 110 H. Can you please tell me is the trilostane is making him sleep so much on the 4th day that he has had it and that his drinking decreased so much? Please help,I am so worried.

I am so very sorry that we did not see your post nor approve your membership until this evening. I share your worry about your boy, and hope that either he had improved by this morning, or if not, that you contacted your vet to tell him/her about your dog's lethargy. The goal of trilostane treatment is indeed to diminish excessive thirst and urination, but we don't want to be overdoing it in the opposite direction. It is possible that this dose of trilostane is too high for your dog, and that he is exhibiting symptoms of overdose. The current manufacturer's recommendation is to start at a daily total that does not exceed 1 mg. per pound. So your dog's starting dose exceeds that by about 30%. Given the complexity of managing both the diabetes and the Cushing's (plus the fact that I'm not a vet :o), I cannot tell you what to do, but I definitely think you need to tell your vet ASAP about these worrisome changes in your dog's behavior.

I would definitely contact your vet to let him know about this. It might be that you would want to be at a lower dose am and pm.

It could be things like the cortisol dropping too fast that is making him feel yucky but always good to be in constant touch with your vet. If anything like vomiting or diarrhea or wobbly when standing or trying to stand start or refusing to eat drink, then you would want to have an ACTH to check current levels.
It is always tricky when managing diabetes and cushings or any two problems. :(

Hi and a belated welcome to you and your boy from me as well!

We have a sister site named k9diabetes and the wonderful people there can help you immensely with your sweet boys diabetes so I strongly urge you to join there too so in that way you have the best of both worlds ;) The link to the k9diabetes forum is: http://www.k9diabetes.com/forum/

When a dog has uncontrolled diabetes the LDDS test has a very high chance of yielding a false positive result so I do question your dear boy's diagnosis for Cushing's. Could you tell us what symptoms he was displaying that led the vet to test for Cushing's in the first place?

How is he feeling today? Is he drinking and eating normally? Has he vomited or had diarrhea?

Hugs, Lori

How is your cockapoo doing? Thought I'd check in and see how he is doing on the vetroyl treatment and if it has helped with the diabetes control?
