My 14 year old pekingese was just diagnosed with cushings. Hope was started on 10mg Vetoryl 6 days ago. She weighs 8.6lbs. In 4 more days, she will have have the ACTH stimulation test. Her tumor/tumors are in the pituitary gland. Since taking the Vetoryl, she has been very sluggish, will barely walk. She is not that active to begin with but I can tell a change in her personality since starting the medicine. Is this common? I do not have a copy of her numbers from the ldds test. I am taking her back to vet in about an hour to make sure she is alright. My name is Lanie Parker and Hope is truly my little soul dog.

Hi Lanie,

Welcome to you and Hope! I am sure glad you found your way here and we will help in any way we can.

We love details so if you could tell us more about Hope's health and diagnostic history that would be a great help to us in providing you with more meaningful feedback. So here goes some questions that I have :)

Could you round up all copies of the testing that was done to diagnose Hope and post the results here. With respect to the blood chemistry and CBC, you need only post the highs and lows and please include the normal reference ranges. We are especially interested in seeing all diagnostic and monitoring tests that were performed on Hope for the Cushing's. Was an urinalysis done, and if so, could you post those findings too? Were other non-adrenal diseases ruled out? Is she taking any other herbs/supplements/medications? Does Hope have any underlying illnesses? Is she getting her Vetoryl with food?

How is Hope's appetite right now? Has she vomited or have any episodes of diarrhea? Dechra, the makers of Vetoryl, recommend a starting dose of 1 mg per pound of a dog's weight so for Hope's weight of 8.6 lbs she should be started at no more than 8 mg so she is getting a tad more that what is recommended. Sometimes in the first 10 days of treatment a dog can go through what is known as cortisol withdrawal syndrome this is because that extra amount of cortisol is now being lowered and it takes a bit for their system to adjust, however the only way to know this for sure is to have an ACTH stimulation test done so I am glad that you are taking her in to see the vet. Since she is not acting her normal self and is having trouble walking I truly believe that is the right thing to do, and I would ask them to run a chemistry blood panel to make sure her electrolytes are not unbalanced.

Hoping that sweet Hope is feeling better soon and we are looking forward to hearing more about your dear girl.

Hugs, Lori

Hello I just want to say hello and ask how Hope is? What did the vet say?
