My sweet boy Rudy diagnosed 7/7/15 diabetes type 1. He is a Cavalier King Charles 9 years old. Now weighs 20.4 lbs.was 22.8 Put on Novolin N initial 6 units. Put him in hypo. Been going to vet 3-4 times week since bcuz Hills Prescription W/D even tho I informed them serious chicken allergy. Tried first 10 days then gagged out & refused. Even tried baking it. Still has effects from allergy- scrotum triple size raw-feet chewed raw. Has been non regulated since. Long story he's slow wobbly and sad. Vet said Pedigree food I gave him since puppy probably caused diabetes. Have spent close to 1500.00 since diagnosed. Is on SAMe now on 2nd bottle. Insulin 5. Because of scrotum and paw chewing been on Clavamox. Now on Cephalexin 250mg and ketoconazole 200mg. BG when diagnosed 465 am 360 pm. Had abdominal ultrasound single cavity. Told angry liver. 9000 plus on panel. Also said pancreatitis but he had NO symptoms of it. Put on Tramadol. Made him non responsive and limp. I Stopped it immediately. Yesterday he was 145 am and 200 pm and liver panel 3000 still high but not 9000! Now saying he has Cushings. Again not 1 symptom after reading 2 hours on subject. Want him to come back for Cushings test over200.00. I'm 51 and disabled and trying to live on $800 mo disability. I'm so stressed no sleep guilty and confused. I am on K9 Diabetes and they suggested I try this site. Everyone said no don't do test right now as he his best yesterday with his levels and can wait. I had to put him back Pedigree as I spent so much$$ on foods he wouldn't eat. He goes and cleans bowl with it when b4 I had to force hand feed him. He's not thirsty and won't drink from bowl so I give ice cubes through out day. Stools are very loose but no blood and I know it's from food changes. Please help advise as I'm totally overwhelmed. My late husband gave me Rudy for my bday and I love him more than anything. He is my fur person😊❤️

Hello and welcome to the forum. Oh my goodness, Rudy does have a lot going on.

First thing I will say is that I agree with the k9 Diabetes forum. There is little point in any cushings testing while Rudy has these things going on, Liver high high values, pancreatis (not all dogs display typical symptoms of that, but high lipase values and the ultrasound would have confirmed) The severe allergy attack.

There is a new allergy drug out, its in short supply because it is very good from everything I've heard. See if your vet can get this "Apoquel" Call around even.

Cushings is a natural for a vet to think about with liver enzymes that high and diabetes being wonky, but cushings tests are prone to give false positives when you have other serious things going on and Rudy does, so I wouldn't want you to waste your money either.

Make sure you always have copies of all Rudys tests, that way you can refer back to them and if you do speak with another vet, you don't repeat tests that are already done.

Have you thought of seeing a small animal specialist? With what Rudy has going on that might be a better way to manage his care in the long term. Just a thought.

Have they done a bile acid test do you know? Did the ultrasound mention adrenal glands and gall bladder?

Your Rudy is just precious in his picture and I know he is dear to your heart and your baby.

Thank you Sharlene! No mention of bile adrenal or gall bladder. I'm just researching everything & anything. I'm not ruling out eventually doing test but my gut tells me his little self needs a break from all these day long visits 11 total since 7/7. I do have a folder with all paperwork so I can give to a new vet I found. Thanks for your support and info😊

My bad. I had to figure his lab results. Taken yesterday.
7/09 ALT 791.
8/12 ALT 672
Normal range 12-118

ALK Phos 7/09 8000
ALK Phos 8/12 1903
Normal range up to 200

My question is if they think he has Cushings the common med prescribed is ketoconazole which he's in for his fungal infection for paws & scrotum. But it can elevate ALT??

If your vets are telling you that the drug most often used to treat Cushing's is Ketochonozole, you need a new vet NOW. Keto is not a very effective treatment tho it is sometimes used with dogs who simply cannot use the traditional, effective drugs either Lysodren or Vetoryl (Trilostane). Keto is VERY hard on the liver and in a cush pup the liver is already being over worked to a great degree - it does not need any extra burden placed on it if at all possible. ;)

That's what I've researched. Called clinic asked. They say can't give him steroids for his infections and ketoconazole is for 2 wks to treat his raging infection and then that's it. However if I should do a Cushing test I will remember that it's bad for it. Hopefully by then he will be cared for by another clinic.

Steroids I was told what shoot BS off the charts so that's why the ketoconazole

Definitely need to get the infection taken care of and gone before even considering cushings testing or medication. The results could and likely would be positive no matter what as the cortisol is bound to be raised with an infection.

Steroids definitely have a bad effect on the body and can also cause cushing symptoms.

Learn as much as you can but for now as you said, concentrate on getting him well. The blood are looking better already so that is good.

We know how hard it is to try and figure this stuff out, with testing and second guessing even the symptoms you are seeing.

I'm blessed to have people who care and want to help. I had to take Rudy to new vet 20 miles in Alvarado bye ate last night gave him shot then he threw up at 10pm. This morning he was so weak BG was 51 with hypo since food didn't stay. I gave him 1tbs Karo and he perked up but still wouldn't eat or drink. Doctor did glucose side to side with me ( they took blood from his sweet neck) put it on my gluc meter it read 106. Then they ran in lab and they got 126. He was encouraged that ours were similar. Said to stop ketocanozole and cephalxiin which could be culprit to non appetite. Keep giving SAM E and definitely said that is not a Cushing dog. As some posts have said some docs love to push for that test. He said that I'm great mama and doing all right things- thanks to all of you for that. He said don't feed until tonight or try it. If he doesn't eat then no insulin. Rudy drank for them tho not for me?? He was alert and likes his new vet. Cavaliers tails always wag. Anyway he changed topical spray for fungus to miconosole and also gave me some appetite enhancer tabs mirtazapine and Apoquel for the itching. He said wont hurt to stop what old vet had him on to see if appetite returns. He was so good and loving to Rudy... Not the doom and gloom feel I was getting from old vet. Definitely worth 20 miles!😊 I got home and soaked paws in Epsom for as long as I could hold him 5 min. I have torn meniscus from fall other day. He is resting. He did take a doggy treat at vet happily so I pray he eats tonite. He had had 3 really good days now this. He's resting now bling morning for him😓. I love all the help and encouraging posts-again thanks to everyone. Keep up prayers they helping❤️❤️

Re: Rudy - Cavalier King Charles Diagnosed 7/7
Rudy passed away today at 140pm from complications of necrotic skin disease. He was bleeding from his sweet eyes groin rear end. It developed Sat and with Labor Day weekend couldn't get him in until this morning. My neighbor was with me. Spent 4 hours with him before his time came. He passed with one last tail wag. I love my boy. Forever my soul friend. Thank you all for all advice.

Dear mom,

I am so sorry to hear about your sweet boy, Rudy. I can imagine the impact his passing has had on you. I know how these little Souls can become our children, how we feel they are holding in themselves the connection we have for another who has gone on. And how, when it is their time to go, all that old pain comes rushing back to join the fresh. Please know you are not alone. Many here understand only too well what you are going thru. We are here anytime you need to talk, to cry, to scream.

You did all you knew to do in order to help your sweet boy...and Rudy knows that as well. He knows you always did your very best on his behalf and is grateful for the life he had with his family. Today he is healed, whole and strong once again, running wild and free in the Rainbow Fields. He was met by your husband and all whom Rudy knew and loved...and he has made a whole host of new friends, my Squirt among them. Rudy will watch over you with love and devotion just as you always did him. And when your job here is done, he will be standing at the Bridge waiting to fly into your arms once again, never to be parted.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Our deepest sympathy yours,
Leslie, Trinket, Brick, Sophie, Fox, Redd, and all our angels at The Bridge

FROM FRIEND TO FRIEND ♥

You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.

But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.

So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.

The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.

That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner 'til the end.

Please, understand just what this gift,
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.

So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.

And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll stay.

I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
...a young dog once again.

My boy he passed in peace. Got to spend 4 quality hours loving and hugging him. Whispering to him b4 he was euthanized. I'm having him cremated and return to me. Friends and family going to give him memorial next week. He always wagged his tail. Even at night sleeping. He did a few tail wags as I held him at his final moment.
