I have an 8 yr old beagle/bassett diagnosed with Cushings, have given Vetoryl for 30 days, with great improvement, was off it for 5 days and has become sick, vomiting, drinking only water, and not eating. Have refilled vetoryl and began giving it to him, but am concerned that I don't know if I can continue giving it to him on empty stomach.

Hi and welcome to you and your boy,

I have manually approved your membership so now all your posts will be seen right away. Also, please just disregard the validation email that was sent to you from k9cushings.

With the symptoms your boy is showing it sound like his cortisol has dropped down too low and the Vetoryl should be stopped. His cortisol needs to be checked which requires an ACTH stimulation test, and I would recommend that his electrolytes be checked too. Too low cortisol and/or unbalanced electrolytes can be life threatening so both of this issues need to be addressed immediately.

Sorry, I only have a moment but after reading your post I became really concerned for your boy and felt I had to make you aware that your boy's situation is serious and he should be seen by the vet or taken to an emergency clinic.

Vetoryl cannot be given to a dog that is presenting signs of being unwell, and to be properly absorbed it cannot be given on a empty stomach.

Please let us know how he is doing, ok?

Hugs, Lori

Please, DO NOT give him anymore Vetoryl.
The symptoms you're seeing on him are classic signs of an overdose from Vetoryl. He needs to be seen by a vet now, not tomorrow.
As Lori said he needs to have an ACTH stimulation test and get his electrolytes checked.
Please, come back and let us know of his progress. We are very worried for him and you.

Did your baby become sick AFTER stopping the Vetoryl?

Why did you stop the Vetoryl?

Was your baby sick at any point while taking the Vetoryl?

Hello and welcome from me too.

Did you have a follow up ACTH test at the 2 day and 30 day mark after starting vetroyl? This is the standard protocol and lets you know if for any reason your dog is going too low on cortisol.

The symptoms of being too low are vomiting, diarrhea, not eating, lethargy, wobbly, not drinking. It may include one or all of those symptoms.

If the ACTH test confirms your dog is low, then depending on how low, a rescue dose of prednisone may be given. Once the symptoms of cushings come back and an ACTH test confirms that the cortisol levels are coming back, then your dog would be restarted on vetroyl at a lower dose than the one who caused the crisis.

Hope your baby is doing better.
