A coalition that represents most shelters in San Diego County announced Wednesday that it will no longer euthanize animals because of lack of space, but will put down only those with serious and untreatable medical conditions.
The Humane Society and other members of the San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition have worked to restrict the county's animal population, increase opportunities for pet adoptions, eliminating the need to destroy healthy animals. The new policy was announced Wednesday, the start of the fiscal year, when it took effect.
"As of today, no animal will be euthanized in this county because of space, "said Gary Weissman, president and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society."
