Lots of us have dogs that are elderly anyway even without Cushings. So we don't know how long they have left with us - or maybe you have been told yours doesn't have long.

I'm trying to do a bucket list with my dog Gabriel - if nothing else so he can enjoy life while he is still able to.
Sometimes he has energy sometimes not so any ideas appreciated.

Any suggestions please add to the list....thanks...

1. Sleeping outside in the sun (in kids old pop up tent as a sun shield he spent all afternoon listening to the birds.)

2. Eating ice-cream (I used frozen yoghurt and honey instead)

3. Playing on the beach with the kids (he tried his best to chase the waves by hobbling back and forth but his smile said it all)

4. Walk in a park (and off lead for a run in a field - he just stood there but he was happy to be off the lead)

That's all we've done so far...:D

What a sweet idea for a thread. Thank you so much for doing this! My almost 11-year-old nonCushpup Peg is suddenly aging really, really quickly :o, and it is very easy for me to get lost in feelings of regret and sadness over things she can no longer do. But your post today is like a ray of sunshine to inspire me to make the most out of all the special moments we can still share together. :) :)

So I will come back again myself a bit later on, and edit my reply to add a Bucket List for my baby girl, too. (She will always be my baby girl, all 80 pounds of her!)

Marianne

OK, here's the start to our list (more to come :)):

To reach the millionth belly-rub mark.
To sit on the deck in a cool breeze and survey her royal domain.
To walk through the April buttercups in the field by the lake.
To greet dad at the door with a ball in her mouth and tail spinning in a circle.
To have the whole couch to herself without her little sister squishing her. ;)

Yes, a great idea indeed, and a thread as such was started by pansywags back in February 2014. ;)

What's on your dog's bucket list? (http://www.k9cushings.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6097)

To be certified as a therapy dog and be permitted to walk where angels dare to tread among the old and ill who give the best hugs of all.

Thanks for this link - some more good ideas on it :)

I think 'Pizza' is definitely on his list although it's not so good for dogs lol

Also 'sleeping on my bed' - sometimes he manages to get up the stairs and jump on the bed so I think I should encourage him to make the most of it while he can :D

@labblab... a million belly rubs - that made me laugh - definitely top on all of our dogs lists.

I can imagine your Peg through this lovely list - she sounds so much fun.

My dog has aged really fast this last month too - he's a different dog but I'm enjoying this chilled out cuddly dog he's always looked after me guarding me from the impending danger of the post - now its my turn to look after him.

Being a therapy dog is a great idea for an older dog @ Wrighton- mine has problems getting in and out of the car but if yours can do that good luck with it that's a lovely idea ;)

What a wonderful thread, thank you.

I have three (non Cushpups) who are 8-9 years. Here are some things for my girls.
- dig holes in the yard anywhere they want (I just fill them back)
- take a road trip at least twice a day
- definitely be with my human as much as possible
- a pile of endless chewies to hide from my sisters

Ha ha - you're right - their version of top of the list may not be quite like ours lol

@mytil - thats' a sweet list - hiding endless chewies lol - we find them in the strangest places - in my paper box for the printer or under cushions ;)

Stuff I can still chew
car rides especially if I am bouncing and excited
people food
food without meds
peace and quiet laying in the sun outside (if it's not too hot)
not being alone
walks where I walk not get put in my stroller

Oh that's so sweet :) - and what a good idea to use a stroller for when they get tired - I think I'd have to use a wheelbarrow for mine lol.

The stroller draws attention. I have seen people say they got harassed (other forums about pet strollers) for using a pet stroller, but I haven't encountered any. Sometimes people ask and I say she is older and has a chronic disease and we won't leave her home. This is generally met with smiles and "what a good idea." I do live the Pacific Northwest where people are pretty easy going about most things.

I do know they make strollers in all sizes. Including ones for large dogs. One I have seen on the internet can be pushed as you would a regular one or towed behind a bicycle. Just because you have a big baby doesn't mean there isn't one out there for you ;) Just keep it in mid if you ever need it, or anyone else for the matter.

I think thats a great idea - he does get tired after long walks - so that's something I'd look into - I'm guessing with a small dog people think it's being treated like a baby especially if they put clothes on it so they think its cruel because they assume it can walk

- it's not like they can stop and explain to everyone so maybe they could put a slogan on the pram or it's t-shirt-
' I'm no baby I'm a Cushing's dog' ;)

I stopped caring what strangers think many years ago. It is very liberating. As long as my dogs are happy and a situation works for us, I don't feel a need to explain. ;):D

I don't care either - part of the fun of being over 40 is being eccentric anyway lol :D
