I'm not sure where to start... so here's some information. We adopted Jack from our local Humane Society almost 10 years ago. We figure he is somewhere close to 11 y\o. Up until last year, it's been smooth sailing; he is a joy. He is the 4th dog that has blessed our lives.
Last year we went through 2 ACL surgeries, a keratotomy and the removal of what we were assured was a slow growing sarcoma. Spent MANY thousands but my only complaint centers around some of the veterinary care we received.
Moving forward, we were told during a recent post op phone call after the latest ACL surgery that Jack's liver numbers were at 900 when they should have been under 150?? We were told he most likely has Cushings. In hindsight, he has several other classic signs... potbelly, voracious appetite, panting plus his urge to drink an urinate is somewhat elevated. We have not done further testing as he has been recovering from his ACL surgery. Quite frankly, the $12000 we spent in the last year has tapped us out.
I'm asking is the anything we can do for him from a dietary standpoint until he can travel and we can afford more tests? What are YOU feeding your dogs? Raw diet? We are doing Honest Kitchen at the moment on the advice of a local person that specializes in healthier food choices.
I feel like my head is spinning. The financial and emotional worries are overwhelming. It goes (almost), without saying that my husband and I love Jack. We, just like all of YOU, want what's best for the dogs we love so much.
Thanks in advance for any positive input.

Hi and welcome to you and Jack,

I am sorry for the reasons that brought you here but glad you found us. Oh Bless you for giving Jack a forever home, and we can tell that you love and are devoted to dear Jack.

Could you get copies of all tests that were done on Jack and post those results here? We only need to see those values that are abnormal with the reference ranges and units of measurement...e.g...ALT 150 U/L (5-50)...Thanks!

Goodness, sounds like poor Jack has been going through a lot, and now Cushing's is suspected. Cushing's is a slow progressing disease so there is no rush to treat as of right now. The medications given to a dog with Cushing's do not cure it they are to help abate the symptoms, which usually bothers the owners more than the dog. ;)

Regarding the diet for a cush dog, they should be treated individually, and tailored to each dog. A high quality protein with moderate fiber is usually recommended. The Honest Kitchen feed is good so if Jack does do well on it than I see no reason to change it.

Please know we will help in any way we can so do not hesitate to ask all the questions you want.

Hugs, Lori

Thank you for your dietary advice and your kind words. We will be having some tests done as soon as Jack can travel. Our round trip is more than 3 hours as we are seeing a specialist for his TPLO (ACL). We haven't had much luck with the local veterinary talent. Do most people seek a specialist for this type of issue (Cushing), or use their general practitioner? I'll be sure to post his test results as soon as we have them.
Again, many thanks!

Unfortunately many GP vets are just not that knowledgeable about Cushing's, however, if you have a vet that is like that but will work with you as a team player regarding your furbaby's treatment, will respect your concerns and listen to them, and does not feel intimidated when you question them about anything regarding your furbaby, if one has a vet like that, that is a huge plus factor!!

When I was treating my boy, Harley, we had an IMS and his regular GP, the IMS was used for ultrasounds, and was only consulted with on major issues with Harley's health. His GP was in charge of the rest of his care, such as ACTH stimulation tests, any blood work, etc.

Welcome to you & Jack! I am here with my second Cushing's beagle, Abbie. I would have been a basket case the first time without the very knowledgeable folks on this forum and I knew exactly where to come this time around. I would add to Lori's counsel that it will serve you well to read as much as you can in the resources section. My vet has treated many Cush pups but, armed with the information from here, he has adapted some of his practices.

We look forward to getting to know you and Jack!

I can't assist you greatly with information because I am currently in a similar position with Chaka, but I do empathize. I am currently trying to find out whether Chaka is safe being commenced on Trilostane whilst he is on Thyroxine. I have spent days on the internet because I am concerned that my dogs vet is not being are careful as he might. I have found what appears to me to be a very helpful at http://www.2ndchance.info/cushings.htm.

I will pass on any other information I find, in the meantime take care.

Hello Heidi! I wanted to welcome you and Jack to the group. I'm sorry to hear he is having problems but am glad that his ACL surgery went well.

The folks in this group are so supportive and knowledgeable. You will find that it's such a relief to have others to share your thoughts and concerns with during this journey.

I'll be waiting with the others to see how Jack's testing for Cushing's turns out. Hang in there!
