View Full Version : Kiya & Cece - Diabetes and Cushing's
I was so relieved the day I found your page. Kiya is a 10 year old Miniature American Eskimo. We also have her 8 year old daughter. Very recently Kiya was diagnosed with diabetes and possible Cushing's. It was then I started to search, I had not heard of Cushing's before. Since then she has had the blood work done. It is apparently a pituitary tumor. Today we started Vetoryl. It seems way over our heads right now. We have not had any problem giving her the insulin. I have not seen any posts regarding the back legs going out from under her. Is this part of the muscle deterioration? If so what kind of out look do we have? I'm not great with technology, so please be patient with me.
While dealing with all of this Kiya's Siamese sister got another uti, and so the hardest decision I've had to make is to end the suffering on her part. Cheyanne is 14. So this weekend we have her vet coming to our home, she will go to sleep in my arms.
Kiya will be our top priority. I know you would like to see her numbers, I have just misplaced it at the moment. Thank you for this opportunity to share our story. Cecilia

Hi Cece!
Welcome to the forum. I'm new, too, but wanted to welcome you :)
I'm so sorry to hear about Cheyanne. I hope it's not out of place to ask, but has she ever been tested for Cushing's? UTI's are very common with Cushing's. My Zanya is on another round of antibiotics for yet another one, it can be rough! (We just started trilostane on Saturday, so they're almost "twins"!)
Someone more experienced will be by to welcome you with some more information, but we'll look forward to seeing Kiya's numbers.
How much does she weigh, and what dosage of Vetoryl is she taking?
It must be an incredible challenge for you, to now add Cushing's into the mix with her diabetes.
I look forward to hearing good things about Kiya!
My thoughts are with you and Cheyanne.
Regards,
Samantha

Hi Cecilia,
Welcome to you and Kiya! I'm sorry for the circumstances that brought you here but glad you found us.
I am so sorry about dear Cheyanne, and my heart goes out to you. It is difficult making the decision to let them go, as a member used to say, we take their pain and make it our own because losing our furbabies is heartbreaking.
Was the diabetes diagnosed before the tests for Cushing's were performed? The reason I ask is because uncontrolled diabetes can create false positive results on the tests for Cushing's.
And yes, we do like to see the results of all tests that were done on Kiya, we need only the abnormal values with their reference ranges and units of measurement...example ALT 150 U/L (50-100). We are especially interested in the diagnostic and monitoring tests for Cushing's. Also was an urinalysis done and if so could you post those findings too?
Now, can you tell us more about Kiya such as her weight, and is she taking any other herbs/supplements/medications? What symptoms is Kiya displaying that led you or your vet to test for Cushing's in the first place? Does she have any other health issues? What dose of Vetoryl has the vet started Kiya on?
Weakness in the rear legs is a common symptom of a dog with Cushing's. This weakness is from that excess amount of cortisol that the dog is producing which causes muscle atrophy. Improvements in that area may take a while to see.
We are here to help in any way we can, so do not hesitate to ask all the questions you want. ;) In the meantime here is a link from our Resource thread regarding Vetoryl: Trilostane/Vetoryl Information and Resources (http://www.k9cushings.com/forum/showthread.php?t=185)

Hello and welcome from me, too! I have only a moment to post right now, but wanted to tell you that I've added a bit onto your thread title in order to catch the eyes of our other members who are also coordinating treatment for diabetes along with Cushing's.
Also, here's a link to our sister forum that deal with diabetic issues:

I strongly encourage you to join there, as well, because those folks will be able to give you great advice re: the diabetic side of things. We have several members who belong to both forums, so you will have good company!
