Newest family member, Bella Howe.

I know, it didn't take long but Daisy Mae's family has a new family member. Her name is Bella and we met her on Saturday at the Humane Society in Waterford, CT.

Bella was first at the Humane Society after they rescued her from the south. She was adopted and recently brought back because her new mom was afraid and in an abusive relationship. She doesn't readily approach men, but once I let her know that they're "ok" she is tentative but fine. She'll be 3 on Nov. 14th, weighs 18lbs and is a standard dapple dachshind.

I'm in the process of adding pictures of her to our family album.

Training Bella is going to be a interesting, she runs and hides underneath my bed even if I try to redirect her with a treat without scolding her.

Any ideas? She's smart, as all dachshunds are, but obviously traumatized when someone says a loud command and she's very wary of noises in general.

No, no....I remind her who is boss. She's 18 lbs of muscle, twice Daisy's weight but feels like a 50 lb dog! She'll get a lot of love but training is definitely in order. The cats won't play with her yet, but they'll walk right by and when I hold one of them I don't see any signs of jealousy because that would be a deal breaker.

Still working on getting her not to pull while walking. :-)

Oh Valerie, Bella is a beautiful girl. Her coat is gorgeous and the color is amazing. Do they refer to that color as a merle? No matter, congratulation on the addition of your new family member. Lucky Bella!

Hey Val,

I have not been able to be around much but did want to check back with you about pretty Bella. You had mentioned training issues with her and I wanted to tell you about a class I took with Zoe. All about clicker training and you can get a book to tell you how to approach it. I am a firm believer in this approach for shy or non-confident dogs as I have seen the results first hand.
