My little Dachshund foster, Dani, had extensive surgery today to remove more than 20 mammary tumors. She is a senior girl so they didn't want to put her under again so they spayed her and did a dental too. She was under for a long time. :( I brought her home four hours ago and she hasn't moved. She did drink a few big syringes of water. She's is completely out of it and no way could I get her clavamox and tramadol into her tonight. She will probably be out for the count anyway so that have to wait until tomorrow morning.
Please say a prayer for this little girl. She was a breeder until she was of no more use and was abandoned on the side of the road with all these tumors, infected teeth, eyes and ears. I just snapped a pic of her in her cushy, comfy bed. Her compression bandage is to help prevent the blood from pooling at the incision sites. It stays on until I take her back for her recheck on Thursday.
She's as sweet as they come, never barks, tail continually wagging. She so deserves to get through this and find a wonderful home. I would appreciate it if all you angels would watch over her and keep her in your prayers.

Poor little girl!!! Tons coming her way for a quick recovery and no complications. Some breeders should be catapulted to space never to be seen again.
Keep us updated on this little sweetie pie.

Perfectly said, Terry! I'm sending huge healing hugs to this sweet little girl, too. (And to you, as well, because I know how worried you are about her!).

Dani woke me up at 1:00 am standing in the middle of the room. I picked her up, took her outside, she peed and put her back to bed where she's stayed today. She was hungry enough to get some meds into at 1:00 and was very hungry at 8:30. She is in too much pain to stand so I feed her by hand. Her pain seems to be getting worse so I added Rimadyl to her meds an hour ago and hope it kicks in soon. She has this little pitiful whine that is killing me. Her little tail still wags up a storm when I talk to her. I'm taking her to the clinic to check the incisions on her lower abdomen that is visible under her compression bandage. It looks pretty swollen but that part of her abdomen was a bit fatty to begin with. She really is not ambulatory so I have to carry her out to do her business. She hasn't pooped yet but she hasn't had much to eat in the last 36 hours. She does have some nasty gas though. Her bed is under my desk and there was a few times I lost my train of thought. :D
Thank you all so much for caring about precious Dani. This is going to be a very difficult recovery for her and I would appreciate if you would keep her in your prayers.

Oh Glynda,I just know with your care sweet Dani will pull through. You will both remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Bless her little heart. It probably would hurt like all get out to poop so I don't blame her. I'll never forget the first time after a major abdominal surgery - the screams brought neighbors brought running! :o
I'm so glad they were able to do this for her so hopefully she will not end up like my little Tash but can look forward to a long, healthy and happy life ahead. With your TLC, she has the best chance possible.

Thanks and God bless all of you for being there for me and Dani. Our girl actually got out of bed on her own this morning to go outside to pee. Her little legs are so short, I had to help her up one little step. We went to the vet on my lunch break and had her compression bandage changed today. They cleaned her incisions really good and put on a new compression bandage. Removing the tape from her fur was painful and she let it be known. This was the first time I had ever heard her make a sound. That visit completely wiped her out and she has literally not moved since I brought her home three hours ago. We're hoping the bandages can come off on Friday. If so, we can put a t-shirt on her and if she's good, she can avoid the cone of shame. This was a lot of trauma for one little girl to handle and it's going to be some time before she is acting like her cute little self. Actually I don't know what she acts like when she's feeling good. She's had painful infections since she got here. It's time for another Tramadol now. I'll keep you all posted.

How is she doing Glynda?

Good morning all.
Dani is doing much better. I cut the compression bandage off on Friday and lathered her underside up with Hibiclense to get her all clean and to kill all the germs. I've been spraying her incisions several times a day with Vetricyn gel and she is healing nicely. She rarely licks her incisions so no cone of shame necessary. I put a onesie on her but like most Doxie's I've ever cared for, it's around her waist or completely off of her within minutes. Onsies are just not made for weenies with legs. :D
I've been very worried with her eyes and it's apparent they hurt her. When I picked her up from surgery, I was given a tube of NPB ointment which has done nothing. I knew from watching her and looking at her eyes that she has dry eye so when I took her back to clinic on Wednesday, I told the vet that the meds he gave me were doing nothing and asked if they did a Schermer test. Keep in mind, this is a spay and neuter clinic run by the rescue so their drugs on hand and medical expertise is limited. The vet was very sarcastic when he told me that these are rescues and they address the most pressing issues. Well excuse me!!! That was the wrong attitude and a stupid thing to say to me because being intact and having long standing mammary tumors were not causing Dani's current discomfort, her eyes were. I had to count to ten and bite my tongue really hard but I managed to not get arrested or jeopardize my relationship with the rescue. I picked up a tube of GenTeal Severe Dry Eye Relief on the way home and called the vet tech on Friday, on the vet's day off, and asked her to order some Optimmune just in case The GenTeal gel isn't enough. GenTeal is the bomb. The veterinary teaching hospital in So Cal turned me onto it. I noticed a big difference within a day and the thick white mucus has almost disappeared. Because of the high altitude, this vet should be familiar with the signs of dry eye as everybody's eyes are dry in this climate.
This is the same vet who told me he thought Dani might have Addison's because her potassium was high and her direct bilirubin was somewhat low. I got a copy of her labs and now know this vet really needs to stick to spaying and neutering. Dani's blood specimen was extremely hemolyzed at 4+ which is highest grade. She had none of the usual abnormalities a dog with high levels of lipids in their blood would have so this tells me it's either a bad blood draw by the vet tech or lab error. Regardless, the results should be thrown away. The footnote on the labs clearly said that direct bilirubin can be falsely lowered by up to 50% with 4+ hemolysis and her direct bilirubin was on the low normal line. Severe hemolysis can also falsely elevate potassium. I was completely disgusted.
Dani's tumors were not sent to pathology as the vet felt they were benign. Needless to say, that brought me little to no comfort but if they really are benign, I think she is probably a pretty healthy little girl. I plan on asking them to redo her blood chemistry, which I will pay for.
All in all, I think I'm proving to be a nagging foster mom for the rescue but hey, if you are going to rescue a dog and commit to saving her life, then do it right so that 1) you really do everything you can to save her life and 2) her new owners have full disclosure.
I'll try to get some new pics of Dani posted. Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes. Love you all.

That is wonderful news! Glad you were able to get something that worked on the dry eyes too. It seems a shame that the vet doesn't have more knowledge when it comes to the health of the animals that are being rescued. :(
Good thing you are there to straighten them out. :) :) It really is all to and for the dogs benefit and them too. I'm sure the new owners of any dogs you foster are very grateful to know exactly what they are getting with their new family members.

So pleased to hear Dani is getting better, Thanks to you.
I'm still thinking about her and wishing her a speedy full recovery from all her ailments.
We used the Gen Tel Severe ointment for Zoe- 4 times a day in conjunction with her other dry eye meds. It always helped Zoe.
I am so happy Dani is improving. Good job Glynda.:):):):)

Dani is doing much better and she now has a spring in her step. I put my house on the market yesterday and my realtor's sister came by with him and fell in love with Dani. I'm pretty sure it's a match made in heaven and if everything checks out, she should be going to her new home next week. Her many staples will be removed Friday. Her eyes are doing much better with the GenTeal Severe ointment but I'll be picking up her Optimmune today.
Dani and I thank you all so very much for your prayers, healing thoughts and kind words.
