Hello!
I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on this; it has to do with my dog's Vetoryl (trilostane) medication.
She was diagnosed with Cushings almost a year ago so I have been giving her Vetoryl for quite some time now.
But my question does not concern my dog, it concerns me! My husband and I have a healthy 3 year old boy and started trying for a second one about 9 months ago. We had a miscarriage in august 2013 and then another miscarriage January 2014.
it really caught us off guard because we are generally healthy people so I didn't understand why it happenend, especially twice in a row.
Anyway! I refilled my dogs vetoryl a couple of weeks ago and saw something saying to wear gloves. This worried me because I have NEVER used gloves when giving it to my dog. Then I start reading more of the label and it says pregnant women and those trying to conceive should not handle the capsules and there have been studies showing early pregnancy loss in lab animals. I was completely blown away and can't help but think this may have been the cause of my miscarriages, which were both early losses.
What is your opinion on this?? Have u ever heard of anything like that happening? I plan on speaking to my guyno about it but wanted to try here first. Thanks so much!!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I am so incredibly sorry for the reasons that brought you here and I truly wish I had some helpful information for you. This question has never been asked before but we have had members who expressed concern based on the manufacturers warnings. I am providing a link below to one particular post that one of our administrator's posted in response to a member's concern for her children. I don't have the best memory but other members may recall other posts that might address this issue.

I am glad you will be discussing this with your OB/GYN and hope you find the answers you are seeking. Just know that we are here to help in any way we can.

P.S. I forgot to mention that your vet should have counseled you on the side effects as well as the manufacturer's warnings. Have you spoken to your vet about this yet and asked his/her opinion. This is an FDA approved veterinary drug with much literature and studies available to veterinarians. I would hope your vet should know everything there is to know about a serious drug that s/he is prescribing.

Hi. I just wanted to jump in here. First, I'm sorry about your losses. I've been there myself last year. I made a point of never touching my Dudley's Vetoryl capsules. My husband usually administers it. But after our loss, I made him also start wearing gloves to administer the medicine. I figure if it isn't good for me to touch as a pregnant (or want to be pregnant) lady, then it probably can't have any good effects on his sperm either. So I definitely recommend buying a box of latex or similar disposable gloves for administering it.

Good luck!

I am so sorry also, and shame on you vet for not informing you of this, mine actually supplies me with gloves every time she refills Buttercups Rx. I really hope that things will be ok for you and your family and that in due time you will be able to add a new bouncing baby to the family.
