Buster's cushings or diabetes insipidus?

Hi everyone! Has anyone used minirin melt to treat cushings symptoms? My dog didn't respond well to vetoryl at all so we're trying this drug but not sure it's helping with the cushings and/or tumor. Can I combine vetoryl at a low dose and minirin? Thanks for your help. Natasha

I've also edited your thread title to include diabetes "insipidus" since I believe the medication you are referring to is desmopressin (used to treat DI rather than diabetes mellitus).

Welcome to you and Buster! Cushing's sure can be a bugger to get a confirmed diagnosis for because other diseases share some of the same symptoms and there is not one test that is 100% accurate at diagnosing it. Would you mind sharing what tests were done on Buster, along with their results, to confirm the Cushing's diagnosis? Also what symptoms did Buster display that led you or your vet to test for Cushing's in the first place? Could you also tell us what dosages of Vetoryl Buster is/was taking and if it was given once or twice a day?

You mentioned that Buster didn't respond to the Vetoryl, what exactly do you mean? Did Buster have an adverse reaction to the Vetoryl? Vetoryl has to be given with food to be properly absorbed, was Buster getting his Vetroyl with food? The timing of the ACTH stimulation tests are very important too, they should be performed 4-6 hours after the dose of Vetoryl is given, was this protocol followed?

I am sorry for all these questions but the more we know about Buster the better our feedback will be, ok?

I believe you can administer Vetoryl concurrently with Minirin. One of my cushdogs was a shelter rescue so I had no medical history on him so we weren't sure why. despite great control of cortisol on twice daily dosing of trilostane, that his excessive drinking and peeing never resolved. His specialist thought he might have diabetes insipidus and put him on desmopressin eye drops. It did not work either. We learned to live with it. Thank goodness for doggie doors and waterproof hospital pads. :D

You mentioned that you dog didn't respond well to Vetoryl. Did he experience adverse reactions or did it not effectively reduce cortisol? How long was he on Vetoryl? What dose was he prescribed and how much does he weigh? Does he have pituitary dependent cushing's or an adrenal tumor? Is excessive drinking and peeing his only symptoms? If not, what other symptoms are you seeing? What tests were done to confirm the diagnosis and is it possible for you to get copies of those tests and post the results here?

I'm sorry for asking so many questions but it is rare that a dog does not respond to Vetoryl. The more information you can provide, the greater our understanding of your pup's history which will help us provide more meaningful feedback.
