Hello and thanks for this great website.
My Nicholas is a 12 year old schnauzer who is diabetic and now diagnosed with Cushings. He had successful cataract surgery but struggles with fat-lipid accumulation in his eyes- I hope that starting treatment with vytrol will control the excess lipids in his eyes and bloodstream
Would appreciate hearing from anyone with the same problem. When Nick went for his re-check for his cataract surgery the Vet saw these irregular white spots on his retina-she thought it was cancer but thankfully they turned out to be fats-they have resolved with a strict fat-free diet and careful monitoring of his diabetes
Thanks for the support!

Hi and welcome to you and Nicholas!

Sorry, I have only a moment to post but wanted to welcome you both to our family. I am sure others will be by to share their knowledge and advice. I also, wanted to let you know about our sister site that deals with canine diabetes, here's the link: http://www.k9diabetes.com/forum/ I do urge you to join there too as the very loving members are very knowledgeable about canine diabetes.

Hugs, Lori

Hello and welcome to Nicholas. Sorry your baby is having troubles. I just wanted to add something as I am tight on time, but those white dots in your dogs eyes can be calcium deposits too. If your dog has these eye issues please take him to an opthamologist. You need to keep a real good watch on their eyes as this can really affect their sight. the Dr. can give drops if they are calcium to make them go away and to not get more of them. A regular vet does not have the equipment to look in their eyes like an eye Dr. does. I am hoping your Nicholas is doing well. Blessings

One thing I forgot. They do have a lot of lipids in their system that can create problems also, you can try fish oil if the triglycerides are high to lower them. A lot of the Cush dogs have high triglycerides because of the fat being immobilized in their systems from the Cushings making high cortisol. Blessings

Thanks for the welcome and info!
Nicholas is being treated by an ophthalmologist and it seems schnauzers have high lipids + the Cushings made for a difficult diagnosis.
After very successful (and expensive) cataract surgery the spots appeared about 6 months later and did affect his vision.
Now with a strict diet they have resolved and I hope that treating the Cushings will also help, It was a joy to have my little schnauzer regain his sight and I am grateful to my vet and ophthalmologists for saving his eyesight.
This journey through diabetes and Cushing's is difficult and I am glad I found this forum!

Hi and welcome.
So glad that you had a good vet and ophthalmologist to save his eye sight. It's important to catch these things early.
It is hard with Schnauzers and their high lipids. Fish oil can help, so that might be something to look into.
Is the Diabetes controlled now?

So glad to hear your baby is seeing the eye Dr. I know my Tipper would go nuts if she went blind so I keep a close check on her as eye problems do run in her breed also. Maybe give the fish oil a try. I use Kronch it is reportedly one of the best as it is cold pressed. Hope everything goes well. Blessings

Hi and welcome! I bet Nicholas is a cutie. I have a (almost) 10 yr. old schnauzer with Cushings. It took us quite awhile to get the correct dosage of Vetoryl for her. It was a number of months before her symptoms were controlled, but now she's doing okay. It is about 10 months since her diagnosis.
Hyperlipidemia is common is schnauzers, I keep mine on low fat everything. She's developed a couple lipomas which so far aren't causing any problems but I still don't like them.
Did you already start Nicholas on Vetoryl? What strength dosage is he taking?
Hope Nicholas continues to do well with his eyes and with Cushings. I'll look forward to maybe seeing a photo of him here.
