2 months since ian died..................the weather is much cooler now and he would have loved it. enya and i miss him a lot. no other dog since i think enya can't handle it. we went to the beach last sunday and she loved it, but it is very hard to get her into the car without ian.
walking in the neighborhood she doesn't do it anymore, but walking in the dunes and on the beach she is looking back where ian is. waiting for him to catch up with us................................

I know that there's nothing I can say which will make it better, so just know that we're thinking about you and Enya.
We had 30C two days last week  but this week it's nearer to 20C so hopefully it's the start of a cool down.

30C late september is very hot..pffff! 20C is nice, we do have about the same temperatures right now, 17 the coming days. we had a lot of rain lately, but nature needed it.
before you know you can walk in the snow again with henry.
i hope we will have some snow this year. my dogs always loved it.

Hi Iris, just wanted to say hello and hope your new year is off to a good start. Belly rubs to Enya.

thank you sharlene!
another "'hot"' winter over here. enya and i both don't like this sticky weather. between 10 and 15 degrees C. in january............
enya still has the pot belly and drinks and pees more than she used to.
she still loves to walk. as long as she is going on like this, i am not going to drag her to "'the scary vets,"' [which they are not. in fact they are nice persons, but enya doesn't think so.......]
not found another dog yet. already 6 months since ian died [enya and i miss him a lot] and 2 years since flynn passed.
i read your posts and see that molly is still going strong too!

Well you know molly, she is a bit of a drama queen at times, so has to keep up the antics. :)
Another hot year, amazing. We are warmer than the last couple years but nothing to write home about for sure. :)
Glad to hear that Enya is still enjoying her walks.
flynnandian
01-28-2016, 05:54 PM
let's hope both our drama queens will go on like this for a long time.
enya is 13 years and 9 months now.
her mom and brother both died at age 14, so counting down i guess.........................enjoying every minute with her.

Just saw that you posted. Sorry to hear you're not enjoying Winter - it does sound too warm :( We've had less snow than last year and it was actually 5C for a few days in the last week so we can see the ground!
I'm pleased to hear that Enya is enjoying her walks, and that you are enjoying the time you spend with her.

yes another non-winter winter.........................
a few days of nightly frost and that was it.

enya wants out, so off we go.

I was reading about the storms in the UK - not good. They've had some nasty flooding already this year. I'm guessing you're getting some of the same storms :(
We've just had around 6" of snow today, which is good as our driveway was a skating rink thanks to the recent thaw / freeze. I took Henry to the beach the other day and the frozen sea ice was making lots of noise so Henry was barking at it :)
molly muffin
01-29-2016, 09:57 PM
I've stayed in contact with Tracy over in Scotland and they have been getting it hard this year. Had a bad one last night, knocked down trees and did damage to buildings.
We've been so much milder than normal, although got snow and ice last night, but going to warm up tomorrow, then freezing again by end of this coming week.
Sure makes it hard for dog walking when it does that freeze/thaw/freeze stuff!
flynnandian
01-30-2016, 06:15 PM
@henry...barking at sea monsters, i hope you scared them away!
i think the weather is off everywhere...strong el nino or climate change?
i guess both.
i would love some snow, so you can send some to us.
it isn't even cooling down at night. very sticky.
although freeze/thaw/freeze weather isn't very desirable too.
i hope at least the energy bill will be low this year.

enya is doing fine, still some mild cushing symptoms, but hardly any progress. her 14 th birthday is may 2.
mentally; she is still missing her brother. doesn't want into the van anymore without him, so we are walking in the neighborhood.
she still manages 30-40 minute walks in a slower pace.
she once injured her left front leg and that leg has arthritis, so she is pretty stiff in the morning. she is on a nsaid painkiller every day now.
but since i missed walking longer distances, training a dog etc. i found a new one on the internet.
not a planned litter, mom is a belgian sheperd malinois and dad a blue merle border collie. his name is midas, born jan. 6th 2016.
i only had to pay for the id. chip, shots and worm stuff and european passport.
enya hates him but i knew this would happen, so i seperate them in the house. and seperate walks too.
i hope the link will work. here he is 6 weeks old.
i will upload new ones soon.

we had a warm winter again. this week it is 15C [60F] and wet. bulbs are blooming [almost done], green grass, so spring it is.

Oh my goodness but isn't Midas adorable!! Such a cutie. What is it about a puppy that just brings so much joy to our lives.
Sorry to hear that Enya is having the stiffness from arthritis. Hope the meds are helping with that.
We are having a bloody cold April here, snow, 13cm the other day!! Word is though that summer should hit around the end of April, so we might skip spring almost completely here.

So sorry to hear about Enya's arthritis. Hamish suffered a bit in his last year and I had to take him to the vets a few times for a pain shot. He also had some acupuncture treatments which worked well if he stayed calm enough for the needles to stay put (so not often!!). I also gave him some glucosamine / chrondrotin pills which had something to do with New Zealand if I remember correctly - I'll try to find the details as they did seem to help, and they had a very doggy friendly smell so he loved taking them.
Oh my, little Midas is absolutely adorable. Do you think Enya will accept him at some point?
So jealous to hear of your Spring. We never seem to get it here. By the time the snow disappears the temperatures are starting to get silly :(
We had lovely Springs in the UK - the farm where we lived was a carpet of yellow daffodils.
flynnandian
04-07-2016, 06:36 PM
@sharlene 13 cm of snow in april.........................not what you expect in spring.
and straight from winter-summer......must be weird!
@mc davis yes spring in the uk is lovely!
i can understand you miss the uk climate.
like sharlene going from inches of snow straight into summer temperatures must be weird.
the nsaid pills do work for the arthritis, but she sometimes refuses to take the pill and then she is a bit lame in the morning.
@ both; i don't think enya will accept midas , he is too bouncy and active for her.
he is wearing me out too ha, ha!
after all he is a working dog.
trying to upload more recent pics to photobucket.

last year july 22th i had to say goodbye to my ian.
in the same awful heat as we have now. 30+C/100+F.
i do miss him a lot as does his sister enya. i want to visit his grave, but it is a long trip and i don't have airco in my old car.
enya is doing pretty well. i still think she does have some mild form of cushing's, but it progressing at a snails pace luckily. she is 14 years old now and as long as she is doing well, i am not going to treat her.
my new dog midas is 6 months old now and already a big boy of 25 kilo. i will upload a pic soon.

Hi, just wondering how you decided to treat your dog that had arthritis and cushings and if you have any suggestions. My 14-15 year old dog probably has both and I don't really know what to do. I'm strongly considering stopping treatment, though it makes me sad to think there is nothing I can do. How did you come to realize your dog also had arthritis? Thanks a bunch.

after the first capsules of vetoryl he became lame and his right wrist was 2x as big as before. he was in pain, because the vetoryl unmasked his underlying arthritis. he was a bordercollie and has worked with sheep and cows, so his joints were not 100% anymore. he had all the symptoms of cushing's including the rare ones. no treatment meant going downhill very fast and i had to let him go. if your dog is tolerating vetoryl fine, i won't stop the treatment unless your dog shows signs of joint inflammation too and is in pain. your dog is already 14/15 years old and you can try out how he is doing without the vetoryl if his arthritis is bothering him. quality of life should be our nr. 1 priority.

thank you, yes 1 year already, seems like yesterday. enya and i are not tolerating the heat very well. no airco in the house.
midas is far too energetic for enya, so i walk them seperately and the same way indoors. she hates him and goes after him ha, ha! she is the boss lady.
how is henry doing? still practising escape artist stuff?
mcdavis
07-26-2016, 07:07 PM
Do you think Midas will start to calm down as he gets a bit older or will it take a few years?
I have no expectations of Henry calming down..... ever ;) I'm keeping everything crossed as I still haven't had an opportunity to try a ruffwear harness on him (no local suppliers) but I did get a thin dog collar which I use to attach his current harness to his collar. I used a piece of string the first week - got some odd looks from people we met!
flynnandian
07-27-2016, 06:43 PM
i have no idea if and when midas will ever calm down, maybe he is related to henry?
okay, let people think what they want. double security is very important in keeping henry from escaping out of his harness.
how is your weather doing. over here it is hot and humid. so it is too crowded at the beach for us. do you and henry go to the beach often in summer?
molly muffin
07-27-2016, 07:43 PM

Our weather is absolutely horrible at the moment. The temperatures are in the 30s to start with, then there's 80% humidity, so spending more than 5 minutes outdoors is unbearable. We've taken Henry to the beach a couple of evenings, but it's even too hot there at the moment too :(
How is Midas with the heat?
flynnandian
07-28-2016, 06:30 PM
@ mc davis;you guys do have exactly the same weather we have. i am not a happy person. midas couldn't care less. he loves every kind of weather. running till his tongue drops on the floor. i have to watch him not overdoing it in this temp.
no beach for us too. i hope your and our temp. will drop soon [but i doubt it], so we can visit the beach again......... stay cool everyone.
@ sharlene; yes midas is a hand full of energy. i think i am too old for a dog like him. no more puppies for me anymore. a one or 2 year old rescue will do. i do see a lot of them on facebook. so many people buying the wrong kind of dog. [and breeders selling them to the wrong persons]

Oh Iris, I’m so very sorry. My goodness, 16 years spent together — I know you will miss Enya dearly. Thank you so much for telling us what has happened, though, so we can add Enya to our honored list of dearly departed companions. What a dog-worthy life, if only it could have continued on even longer. But what a comfort for Enya that your loving face was her first vision when she came into this world, and your parting gift to her when she made her passage.
I’m keeping you in my thoughts, and I send you my sincere sympathy over your loss. Always in loving memory of your dear girl ~

Dear Iris,
I am so so sorry to hear about our precious Enya. :( You and she were so close for so long - I know how you will miss her. She came into this life with your love and she left this life with that same love. What a wonderful gift!
Your family here is with you. Any time you want or need to talk we are here. Even tho you have been thru this more than once, it is never the same just as each love is never the same. So know you are not alone, that you are among those who truly understand and even more, care.
My deepest sympathies,
Leslie
FROM FRIEND TO FRIEND
You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.
But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.
So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.
The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.
That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner 'til the end.
Please, understand just what this gift,
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.
You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.
So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.
Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.
And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll stay.
I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
...a young dog once again.

in the end you have to take more care of them. they need to go out more, broken nights etc.
i didn't expect this to happen, the vet and i thought it was just an uti.

Oh Iris, I read just a little while ago how sad it is for Queen Elizabeth that she had to put down her last corgi from the line that started with the little girl she was gifted with on her 16th birthday. To have had beloved companions from the same line from the age of 16 to the age of 92, and then for them all to be gone...well, I just feel so sad for her!
I know your line of dogs didn’t span as many years, but I’m certain they were loved no less. So once again, I can surely imagine the double pain you are feeling right now. The loss of Enya in her own right, and also the end of the family connection.
I am glad they are all three buried together. That seems only fitting and right. And I’m glad you can find some peace in that, as well. I know it’s probably small comfort, but still a bit of comfort just the same.
Thinking of you all today, and honoring the memory of your sweet little family.
Marianne

yes, queen elisabeth always had a corgi or more from the same line of dogs.
when one dies, you always have a family member to comfort you.
i thought it was the same with her ponies i believe.
yes my dogs are together again and i am going to be buried next to them and my father.
it is a natural burial site in a forest, so you can choose your own spot where you want to be buried.
you can also bury an urn or just spread the ashes.
it is beautiful out there.....

Oh Iris, I always check the forum first thing when I get up each morning, and I can’t tell you how much it’s already brightened my day to see you here!! And especially to hear that Midas remains by your side :-))))).
Yep, we’re still here, and it’s heartwarming when family members return for a visit. The forum is much quieter now than in the old days. A lot of people have shifted to Facebook groups and other types of social media. Message boards like ours sadly seem to have fallen out of favor. I think it’s a shame, because I think we’re able to communicate more personally and in greater depth here. But it is what it is, and that’s what it makes it feel so special to chat with our friends once again.
Life has changed for me, too, since we last spoke. I lost my third beloved Lab a year ago Christmas. My husband and I talk about adding a new fur family member, but the time has not yet felt right. But without a doubt, my life is far emptier without a dog to share it with. So we shall see.
Anyway, it’s a joy to see you here. And we’d love it should you wish to tell us more about your life with Midas. Thanks so much for posting your note, and I send you my best wishes always!

thank you marianne. indeed sad that people are more on social media than on a forum like this with a wealth of knowledge. life is indeed empty without a dog to love and walk with. midas is a certified sniffer dog, rescue dog, mantrailing etc.

Iris, how lovely to see you here along with your pix of Midas!! They are wonderful :-)))))))))))
Please give him a big hug and scritch from his Auntie Marianne, and carry on with all your adventures together — it’s a joy to have you both here!

thank you. this forum means a lot to me. it helped me so much during managing cushing's disease of ian and flynn. i kept in touch with patti [tipper] for a long time, but sadly i don't hear from her anymore. keep on the good work on this forum!

Iris, certainly wonderful to have you pop by and let us know how you are. Your Midas is a stunner - happy he is with you!
So many years have gone by and Marianne is right in her post. Please stay in touch.
