Hi all my friends ,
As you know i posted a while back about my Chihuahua having allergies .
Well the vet i have now has suggested i get a mate for Lara to run and play with . As she has allergy to grass unable to take her walks anymore .Lucky for us we live in a unit with a court yard .;)
We have been offered a 12 month old Chi / girl ... for the cost of sterilization .
However this fur baby has luxating patellas. The breeder tells me if not causing any pain do not have any surgery .
We know they grade this problem from a 1-4 category... Not sure how bad this girl is ... we go to see her tomorrow . :)
Has any one had experience with this problem in your fur babies ?
And if so was surgery successful ? :)
Insurance won't cover her as is pre existing problem .. As hubby and i are on pensions , would like to give this girl the best of care , but want to make sure we can ... As Laras allergies are manageable at the moment with diet and grass limitations..;)
Would appreciate any opinions with regards to Luxating Patellas .
God bless all your babies , Miss my Ebonie ( Passed cushings ) ..2010 .
Cheers ... Catherine & Ken ..... Lara & Natcho . 11.26 pm Wednesday

As a rescuer of small breed dogs, I've seen a lot of luxated patellas, some low grade and some requiring immediate surgery as the dogs could hardly walk. Unless there is known injury to a dog that has caused this problem, it should be considered genetic. I therefore have a real concern with any breeder who has a dog with double luxated patellas and is telling a prospective buyer that if the dog isn't in pain, surgery isn't necessary. The dog is only one year old and there is a very high probability that this condition will worsen with age. If I were you, I'd look elsewhere or at the very least, have the pup seen by your own vet before committing.

Hamish had very mild luxating patellas on his rear paws which caused some discomfort however he was around 13 at the time. I would also suggest getting a vet assessment to understand how bad they are now, what the treatment options are and also get an idea about how things are likely to progress.

Thankyou my friends , as i have not had experience with Patellas only cruciate ligaments... with Natcho , :)
Been getting conflicting stories about Luxating Patellas ... so thought i would ask you people that have had years of experience with small breed dogs .
Guess i am a softy , was thinking about this poor baby not getting a good home , and hubby and i are very caring people ;)

Why don't you see what your vet has to say about it. Did you go today yet to visit her? Is she limping around very badly?
I do agree that you need to go into the situation with your eyes wide open as surgeries can get expensive if that is needed.
I know it is so hard when you want to do what is best and fall in love with these little ones.

My sweet boy, Bear, had a mild case of luxating patellas on both hind legs. When his front leg needed amputated because of cancer I was worried that his rear legs would get worse or would not even be able to hold him up, I was wrong and dear Poo Bear got around very well.
I'm in agreement in that a vet should assess her condition...good luck and do keep us updated.
Love and hugs, Lori

Hubby and i went to see Minky / Female chihuahua ..
Lady was very nice , said the luxating patellas were a grade one .
Minky was a very big girl ... and i think she would over power our Lara with her size .
So we have decided not to take her ;) ... Such a pretty girl , chocolate and white .. She is being rehomed as a pet only ... otherwise she was very healthy looking ... And her owner said she would not allow her to have puppies , because of her existing problem .
She will be sterilized before leaving for her new home .
So we back looking again ..
Thank you all for your advice cheers for now ,

The breeder needs to also stop breeding the parents that produced Minky. ;) I'm sorry it didn't work out for Lara but you will find the best playmate for her I'm sure.

They have done apparently .. Leslie ;)
My good friend Karen is looking out for me .. She was not aware we decided to get Lara a mate . ( Female ) .. :)
If we had a bigger place ... I would have taken Minky but she needs place to exercise ... Lara is restricted with grass issues , so we could not take them both for walks together . Plus her knee problems
Poor baby , but her owner is a caring person ... she will keep her if doesn't find the right home . ( Good women ) .

Took Lara for her check up today  and to my surprise she has a luxating Patella in one of her legs ... ( From behind ... back left ) ...:(
Only a low grade one .... but we will be keeping a check on it in the future .
Dear lord ... truly think God sends these babies to me to take care of .
We discussed getting a mate again and what had been offered to us , She suggested we should look at a puppy chihuahua .. company for our girl .
So guess thats something to think about ... I really feel for Lara , having food and grass allergies .. And now luxating patella .
But we love her dearly and she is personality plus ... All the vets take turns in a nurse when we go there , :)
Oh boy we are in for a very hot week here in Perth W A ..
Lara likes the heat ... and Natcho hates it , so we get our exercise letting them in and out all day . Sending healing prayers to all your pups .. Catherine & Ken .

:)At last we have found a mate for Lara to play with and keep her company . :)
Her name is Indi ... Smooth coat chihuahua . Weighs 1.7 kg and is two years old .
Very similar in colour to Lara :) Has white socks on her feet .
They have us in fits of laughter ... with their antics .
Laras Allergies are under control ... now we know what the problems were . ;)
Posted some pictures for all to see .
My old girl Natcho is not doing so well ..15 yrs old now .. we just keep her comfortable . The heat here in Perth ... Western Australia has been terrible .. :(
Hugs to all ... and god bless you and your babies .
