hi , I am new to the group , but I have come in here to see what info , you all speak about with the cushings ,,, I did see that someone had posted about vetoryl ,,,, here is my story,,, 10 weeks ago my vet put my Chihuahua teko on veroryl 10 mg per day ,,,, also on the same day he was put on L-thyroxine 1mg this was for cushings ,,, I was handed the meds and that was it ,,,, was never told that my dog needed to be watched and blood tested on this ,,,,, at first teko did seem to perk up a little and did start to lose the pot belly as I said he was on it 10 weeks ,,,, last week wed. I called the vet and said that I did not like the rapid weight loss and his back was boney ,,,, his answer was ,,,, ok cut him to one vetoryl everyother day and keep up the L-thyroxine everyday ,,,, and call me next week. Teko had already had the pills for the day on wed , so the next day I was going to begin the skipped vetoryl ,,,,, Thurs. came and teko woke up sick to his stomach and did vomit ,,,, but he got better , on fri. he woke up and would not eat again , weak , and had the runs ,,,, so I called the vet and went in that morning ,,, that was the first time they saw him since starting the pills , he took blood and I had to wait till sat to hear the results ,,,, that night he did eat a little baby food . On sat he was looking a little more perky ,, but would not even look @ any food ,, the vet called and the cortisol level was high ,,, I was told to give the vetoryl , I did , he just got more weak all day , I call the vet , who was at home and could not come out ,,,, but he told me to go to his office ,,, that his vet tech was still there and he was as skilled as he was ,,,, I got in the car to bring teko there , he died in my husbands arms on the way there that was on Oct 26th. I have since talk to the makers of Vetoryl and they are crazed that my dog was not followed with blood work ,,,, Any thoughts or info please , thank you.

Oh my, I am so sorry for your loss of sweet Teko, and my heart goes out to you.

Following the proper protocols are imperative for the treatment to be successful, and a vet should never hand out these medications for Cushing's without explaining exactly how they should be given.

It is obvious that you loved Teko deeply, and your devotion to him is seen too. We do understand the pain you are feeling and are here for you.

Sending loving and consoling hugs, Lori

I am so sorry to read your story and wish we could hang that vet out to dry:mad::mad:

You nor you pup deserved that. I cant begin to imagine how you feel.

I am so sorry, it should not have been this way.

My heart goes out to you over the loss of your sweet little Teko. He has been greeted at the rainbow bridge by many of our fur angels. They will watch out for him now.

I realize your pain has just begun. Many of us have lost beloved fur babies, so we do understand you shock, pain and sorrow. Please feel free to come back and talk with us when you feel up to it. Talking it out helps. At least it did for me. Hugs,

Oh honey I am so sorry!
Monitoring is key to success when it comes to Cushings. The wrong dosage can have little effect if too low and be disastrous if it is too high as you have been so unfortunate to experience.

I am so very sorry for your loss of Teko and do think that you should confront the vet when you are up to it so that no one else has to go through this.

Dear lord what a story, I am so very sorry for the loss of Teka. How awful for you to go through that without the support of a professional who knew what he was doing.

I am actually outraged at your vet's incompetence and apparent lack of knowledge. If Teka was my dog I would be putting in a complaint to whatever veterinary authority you have in your country. He should not be allowed to harm another dog like this.

You really have done the best for Teka, we rely on the advice of our vets and to have been let down like this is just so sad for you now.

My sincere condolences. x

I am so very sorry and my heart goes out to you and your husband. With the proper dosing and monitoring this tragedy could have been completely prevented. It is not the medicine, but the one who administers it.

Please do stay with us - we are all here to lean on.
((((hugs))))

Oh, honey, I am just so sorry you and Teko were subjected to such treatment. :( These drugs are so very powerful and should be handled with the utmost respect. I am just so sorry your vet didn't understand the drug he prescribed, but he's not alone unfortunately. Many vets simply don't understand the disease nor the treatments for it. But I have to say, in your shoes I would be livid. That vet would need to watch over his shoulder and sleep with one eye open from now on.:( I would certainly learn all I could about Vetoryl, Cushing's, and let him know under no uncertain terms where he went wrong, I would force him to look at what he did to my baby with new eyes. I would want him to know what he did to my baby and to my world, but also try to prevent him from causing harm to another cush pup with his ignorance. At the very least, he should have examined Teko the first time you called just to make sure nothing else was going on. :( I am just so sorry, honey.

We can't bring your sweet girl back, but we can listen, hold your hand, and let you rest your head on our shoulders. Please feel free to talk any time.
Our deepest sympathies,
Leslie, Squirt, Trinket, Brick, Sophie and our Angels, Ruby, Crystal, Tasha, and Josie

Dear Lord I am so sorry. I am getting so frustrated at hearing about all these vets not knowing the proper way to diagnose and treat Cushings disease. Especially not knowing anything about the protocol of testing or dosing. This is so distressing to hear, and I am terribly sorry your baby fell victim to one of these vets. After you feel better and can compose yourself it is of utmost importance that you go and see this vet in person and let them know all the things they did wrong that caused you baby's death. You owe it to your poor baby and to others who will go there after you and suffer the same fate. This has to be stopped so no one else has this heartache. I feel for you, and hope you can get thru this. I am a one who feels that you should be able to sue your vet for malpractice just like you would a Dr. They would then learn how tos and why fors of these drugs real fast. God bless you and your sweet Teko. Blessings

hi , thank you ,,,, I did have to go to my doctor today , as I am just not well because of all of this , also I did set up an appointment with a pet lose dr. for tomorrow ,,, I am very sick . Just so you all know , there is an ongoing investigation from the company that makes the vetoryl and they are reporting him to The DEA , and sending the findings as well ,,,, as of right now he ( the vet) did not send the requested records on teko that they all requested and will NOT give me teko's records ,,,, I will go there again tomorrow and if they do not give them to me , I was told to call the police and have them come along with me. This dr. is very arrogant and I can see myself having a real hard time ,,, you all better believe that I will not stop and yes , when I feel better , I will be seeing a lawyer , I cant bring my teko back , but I will stop it from happening again. I cant help but think ,,,, what was my dog thinking while I was giving him these pills everyday , and the vet used my hands to kill my dog . Again thank you all for your support .... it does make me feel better to talk to people who know what this sickness is ,,, thank you.

Oh my gosh! I echo our other members outrage! This is not following proper testing procedures at all. :( Definitely take the police with you to get the records, if they haven't already been destroyed. Did you ever get copies of anything yourself?

I am so sorry that this occurred. There are so many factors that come into play with cushings diagnosis. It is one of the hardest disease to get a handle on because everything else Has to be ruled out first, such as diabetes, thyroid, gall bladder, liver disease, etc. You can't put a dog on cushings medication if anything else is the culprit and a dog will test high cortisol with something else going on, so I don't know if those were all ruled out prior to starting Teko on cushings medication, but I do know that proper testing protocols were not followed once the medication was given.

This just breaks my heart as I know yours is also broken. Please feel free to tell us anything at all, and to share Teko with us in any way you would like.
We cannot take the pain away but we have big shoulders and are willing to lend an ear any time you need it.
My sincere condolences.
hugs,

Please be kind to yourself and keep us posted on how you are doing. I am wondering if there was something else going as well. Those records are your's as you paid for them.
