I have a 13 year old Schnauzer, Toby. He was diagnosed about 5 years ago with Hypothyroidism and put on Soloxine 3mg then up to 5mg. Then due to the high Triglycerides he was put on Gemfibrozole.
Then this past April he was diagnosed with diabetes and we have had a really hard time getting his glucose levels under control. He is now at three shots a day, 11units of Humulin N at 8am, 4 units at 2pm and 11 units at 8pm and we finally thought we were on track, now he is showing signs of Cushings Disease. This is interesting as over a year ago a friend of mine who had two Goldens with Cushings told me she thought it was Cushings.
He is not doing well at all I think mostly due to all t he drugs he is on.
Now they want to add another drug Vyterol. Does anyone know much about it. I have looked on line and I am worried about adding this to his current combination of drugs.

Hi and welcome to you and Toby! :)
If you aren't already a member of our sister site, K9Diabetes, please go over there and register. They are the experts on canine diabetes and will be able to help you a great deal in working through some of your questions as they pertain to the diabetes. I would want to talk to them before starting treatment for Cushing's. The two diseases present very much alike (they share many of the same signs) and uncontrolled / undiagnosed diabetes can cause false positives on the Cushing's tests. Here is a link to their site -

First, I am hoping your vet has already done or is going to do some tests on Toby before giving him any treatments for Cushing's? Yes? If no testing has been done, do not accept any Vetoryl or any other med for Cushing's. They are expensive and should never be given without a confirmed diagnosis.
If Toby has had tests for Cushing's, it will help us a great deal if you can get copies of the actual test results and post them here. The tests we are interested in most are the CBC, Wellness Panel, UC:CR, LDDS, HDDS, ACTH, and abdominal ultrasound - any of these he has had are what we would like to see. Please include the normal ranges for each value along with the little letters that follow the numbers, and all comments / directions for interpretation. Different labs do things differently so it helps to see what that lab calls the normal range and how they interpret the results. ;)
As for the Vetoryl and thyroid med, that shouldn't be a problem. I'm not familiar with Gemfibrozole, or any statins, with Vetoryl but we might have some members who are or who know more about the two together.
You say Toby isn't doing well....could you tell us what you mean by that? Is he eating and drinking well? Is he mobile? Having frequent diarrhea and / or vomiting? Weak? Change in personality?....etc. A pretty hard, fast rule around here is that you don't test for Cushing's while a pup is sick period because the illness itself can make the cortisol rise, causing false positives on the tests.
I'm glad you found us and look forward to learning more as time passes. Do go on over to the diabetes site and get started with them asap BUT that doesn't mean you get to leave us! Oh, no! You and Toby are family now and we will want to know how things are going. We will be here to help you in any way we can as will K9diabetes. Toby is in the best of hands with you and both these families on his side.
Hugs,
Leslie and the gang

Hi and welcome to you and Toby,
We actually have a few members who are dealing with both Cushings and Diabetes. I am sure they will be by to welcome you and share their experiences.
We also have a sister forum for canine diabetes, which has been a big help to many of our diabetes pups. Please also check in over there.

Welcome to you. Just wanted to let you know you are in good hands with this forum. They will help and support you thru all this. I don't know about the diabetes end of this so I will leave that up to some with experience in both of these issues. Wishing you the best for you and your baby. Blessings
