I took Raleigh to have his eye checked today. The doctor said the ulcer is gone. He does have scar tissue. She said we will have to give it time to see if the scar tissue goes away. Keeping my fingers crossed it will.
I can't tell if he can see or not. There are times he still walks into things but not as much as before his cataract surgery.

I took Archie to the vet a week ago. He is having some issues on top of his other issues. He had blood work done. His ALT- 190(ref. range 18-121) and AST-66(ref. range 16-55) are high.
They weren't before. His BUN, creatine kinase and lymphocytes are high. They were before.
He has WBC and EPI cells in his urine.
The vet put him on Clavamox and 3 Standard Process products: Whole Body, Immune and Renal.
Has anyone ever used Standard Process products?

I took Gus for blood work today. If it comes back OK he will be neutered in a couple of weeks. Archie was going to be neutered
on the same day but the vet said to wait till he's on the Standard Process for 4 weeks then recheck his blood work.
Is it OK to have surgery with the ALT and AST up a slight bit like that?

Hi Vicki-
I am sorry to hear about Archie. Standard Process is made here in Wisconsin. When I was taking Zoe to a holistic vet, I used a few of their products. I always thought they were a reputable firm. Back in the far recesses of my memory, there is a lingering question about a possible bad review I read of their products. Maybe it is an incorrect memory; we can google it.

Addy,
I read about the founder who got into trouble many years ago.
I have talked to someone who used their products herself and she said it seemed to work for her and someone else who said it worked for her dog.
So I'm hoping it will help Archie. I think Archie's vet takes it himself.

Gus got neutered last Wednesday.

Has Gus healed from his neutering? Is the aggression issue any better?

I am sorry that poor Archie is still having so many issues. Poor baby.:o Hoping the new products help. xxxooo

Gus also had his nose openings done when he was neutered. That's more of a problem than the neutering. The boys haven't been together much since the surgery. We have to be careful of the stitches on the nose.
A vet told me the hormones run through them for 2 weeks after they get neutered. It will be 2 weeks this coming Wed.

Thanks for all the holiday wishes.
I haven't been here for a while.
As I mentioned about 5 weeks ago Archie had blood work done and his ALT is high. It was 190 (ref range:18-121). Yesterday he had blood work done to check it again. It is now up to 284 after 5 weeks!! I am so scared!! Is it going to stop?!
I looked back at his blood work from the past year. In Jan. it was-45, Feb.-82 March-89, June-97, Nov.-190, Dec.-284.
It has been going up every time he had blood work done this year. It made such a big jump in the past 5 weeks.
Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Budsters Mom
12-30-2014, 10:00 PM
Hi Vicki,

Sorry, I don't know anything about the ALT. Hopefully someone will come around shortly that can help you out with it. What has the vet said about Archie's continuous rise in ALT? Has he/she given you any insight of what could be causing it? How is Archie doing otherwise now? Does he have any other symptoms? Is he still behaving aggressively?

How is Raleigh's eye and has Gus recovered from his neutering and from having his nostrils surgically opened?

Please update us on the others when you have a chance.

Happy new year to all of you!:D

You can have further liver testing done or perhaps just go straight to am ultrasound to look at the liver gall bladder. See if there is anything going on inside that will tell you why this is happening with him. That is probably what I would do

Hoping for more peaceful less stress filled year ahead

Hi Kathy,
I just wrote you a visitor's message.
Right now Raleigh's eye seems OK. It gets checked in 3-4 weeks.
Gus seems to have recovered from his surgery. I don't think the nostril surgery made much of a difference. He must have problems inside his nose.

I took Archie to see a homeopathic vet on the 19th. She gave him a remedy to see if vaccination side effects can be cleared. I have a phone consult with her on Friday so I will be discussing his ALT with her to she what she recommends. Archie's regular vet said he would put him on Standard Process for the liver but he will let the homeopathic vet suggest something. The regular vet told me he is a believer in anything holistic.
The regular vet feels Archie's liver has some kind of inflammation caused by his poor immune system. That's what he thinks is going on. He said Archie's immune system has never matured. I think his immune system was overloaded with too many vaccinations at too young of an age and then again you have to consider where he came from. His vaccination record from the breeder makes me sick to look at. Then with the rabies vaccination it made things worse. That's my opinion. It just makes me so, so angry. It hurts.

scoora
12-30-2014, 10:24 PM
Hi Sharlene,
What other liver tests can be done besides an ultrasound?
Archie had an ultrasound done last Feb. Do you think things could have changed since then?

Budsters Mom

Obviously I'm not Sharlene, but I can answer your question regarding and ultrasound. Yes, there can definitely be changes in 11 months. I realize that money is tight and you have medical issues going on with all three dogs, which does not help. If Archie were my dog, I would get another ultrasound done. If his liver looks okay on the ultrasound, that will help ease your mind some. If it doesn't, hopefully you'll have a new direction to go with his treatment.I am so sorry to hear that his aggression and peeing issue has not been resolved. He's very young to be having so many of these issues.:o:( Has he seen a specialist other than the homeopathic vet? Your regular vet has been treating him all of this time without any improvement. I would be looking for another vet, but then that's me. You must be worn to a frazzle. I would be!:eek:

A bile acid test may be able to show how the liver is functioning.

Here's a link to an article which discusses the tests used for the liver, and a lot of other info: http://www.idexx.it/pdf/it_it/smallanimal/vetlab/catalyst/diagnosing-liver-disease.pdf
It is a long read

scoora

Archie saw an IMS last Jan. She did the ultra sound.

Archie had a bile acid test and ammonia test in the beginning of 2014 to make sure he didn't have a liver shunt. I will check out the article. Thanks!

I have a phone consult scheduled for tomorrow with the homeopathic vet. Archie's regular vet wants her to see about a detox. After I talk to her I will let his regular vet know what she recommends. His regular vet is big on holistic treatments. When we saw the homeopathic vet she suggested a liver detox after surgery, if he would get neutered. The regular vet said after the test results came back, why not do a detox now. So I will see what she suggests to do. Then next week I'll talk to the regular vet and let him know. Then I can see what he thinks about bile acid test or ultra sound.

scoora
01-14-2015, 12:08 AM
The homeopathic vet said she couldn't give Archie a remedy because it was too close to the first one he had. So the regular vet put Archie on a 4th Standard Process product, Hepatic Support, and a low dose of Denamarin. I talk with the homeopathic vet again this Friday. I asked the regular vet about a bile acid test and an ultrasound. He didn't think the bile acid test would be of any help. He wants to do blood work in 4-6 weeks.

Yes Leslie, it does seem that way. With Archie it is constant worry. I feel so lost about things with him.
On Monday I was afraid Raleigh had broken something in his leg or pulled it pretty bad. By Tuesday morning it was much better and by the afternoon he wasn't limping at all. I cancelled his vet appointment for Wed. This morning he is limping again. This time I know he didn't jump off the furniture. So we'll see what happens. He is due for his semi-annual check-up soon. I'll see about taking care of two things at once.

scoora
02-19-2015, 08:43 PM
Sharlene,
Raleigh's had problems before and we were thinking it was arthritis. On Monday it was so bad. Never saw it like that before. Scoop had arthritis in his front legs. I want to make sure the vet checks it at his regular check-up. I worry because my daughter's dog, Bowser had trouble but with his back legs. Now he has cancer. I don't know if his cancer started in his back legs but the vet said it's possible it started somewhere else and spread to his heart and lungs. So I have that in my mind and I worry. You just never know. It's so scary.

I have been working with a classical homeopathic vet and Archie's regular vet. He had a homeopathic remedy to help the liver on 2/9 and he has been on 4 Standard Process products and a low dose of Denamarin. The homeopathic vet says that it could possibly take 3 months for the full effect of the remedy. So we will be continuing what we are doing for 3 more months then check blood work again. Hopefully things will keep improving! I was so relieved when I saw the ALT number had come down!

Last Thursday night Archie started with vomiting and diarrhea. Friday seemed a bit better so I thought it would pass. Friday night it got bad again. Saturday morning went to the vet. He got metronidazole for diarrhea, a shot for vomiting and fluids. Boy did he scream when he got the fluids! He didn't have any more vomiting or diarrhea after that. The vet thought it was something he ate. Saturday night was calm. Well Sunday night Raleigh and Gus both started with it. They didn't get it as bad as Archie. There were extra pills so the vet said I could give them to Raleigh and Gus. They have all been on a bland diet. Archie was off his Denamarin and Standard Process for 5 days. The poops aren't back to normal yet but at least no diarrhea. It was a few tiring days.

I don't think it was something Archie ate since the other two got it and at the same time.

Thanks Sharlene and Lori,
The vet thought it could have been this pork product that I told him about. But why would it have effected Raleigh and Gus 3 days later? They ate it at the same time.
I wonder if there is something Archie picked up from outside and then he passed it to the other 2. There are people who walk their dogs on our road and don't clean up after them and of course Archie always finds it before I see it. I often wonder if Archie could get something from it. When Scoop was young he had whipworm. The vet said it comes from other dog's poop. He had plenty of diarrhea from it but not vomiting.

The DE and Manuka Honey were suggested to me to try to help Archie's digestive system. She's a nutritionist who owns a place called The Dining Dog. She thought maybe his system needs to be cleaned out. I have been working with a homeopathic vet and she said not to use either of those right now.

Raleigh went for a routine check-up on Tuesday. He hasn't gained any weight but the vet said it would help him if he was about 3 lbs. lighter. He is a bit chunky. He is due for his distemper/parvo vaccination. I said I don't want to do it. Raleigh is 11 and he has had vaccinations all his life. In the beginning it was every year. The vet said he has no problem with that. He believes vaccinations last longer than the 3 years. He didn't even feel it was necessary to titer test him right now. The vet said he even believes the rabies vaccination lasts longer than 3 years but it is the law. I said there is a rabies challenge going on right now. He said it will be hard for them to get the states to change it from 3 years.

Raleigh had blood work done. There were a few things off but what the vet mentioned to me was his creatine kinase and triglycerides are high. KC is 229 ref. range 10-200. His triglyceride is 401 ref. range 20-150. Last July he had blood work done before his eye surgery. His triglyceride was only 71. What happened to up it so much in less than a year?

Kathy you are so right. I can't believe it is almost 2 years since we lost our sweet boys. I remember that day like it was yesterday.

Gus will turn 2 in 4 weeks (7/4).

The past several weeks there has been something going on with all 3 boys.
They have had mucousy poops off and on. Raleigh was good for a few days so I only tested Archie and Gus' stool. They were negative. The vet put Archie and Gus on metronidazole and Forty Flora. The mucous went away but they are still soft. Now Raleigh's is getting a bit sloppy again after a week of being good. So confusing.

My daughter took off from work. We went to lunch. We then took Raleigh to a special place we have close by. It's called The Dining Dog and Friends. They make wonderful goodies for doggies. Raleigh had a special chicken and spinach loaf, some yogurt they make and we took home a cake. He enjoyed it so much. The lady who is part owner and is pretty much in charge is helping me with all 3 boys. Their poops have improved since she started working with them. Raleigh has had some vomiting going on recently too. She has been helping with that too. The boys love going there. They sell all kinds of top quality things. They have their own kitchen and bakery. The cardiologist confirmed that Raleigh has a heart murmur.

He said his blood pressure was a little high but he doesn't rest in the car (over an hour drive) and he was panting quite hard so I guess the cardiologist figured that didn't help his BP.

His EKG was OK.

The cardiologist said he can see the murmur on the ultrasound but everything else he could see looked OK. His heart is not enlarged.

He put Raleigh on Benazepril, told us to check his breathing and listen for coughing. Raleigh does not do much coughing right now.
Hopefully the meds will help with the murmur.

I took a disc with his chest x-ray but the nurse couldn't find Raleigh's pics in their system. The chest x-ray shows a collapsing trachea, according to our vet. I don't know if the cardiologist would have commented on that or not.
He did mention about the difference in coughing between the heart problem and the trachea.

I will be getting a report in the mail soon. I will see if there is anything else in the report that I didn't mention.

Did the cardiologist grade his heart murmur? Good EKG YAA!!!

My Marvin has a collapsed trachea and is taking medication for it which does help with his "goose honking" cough.

Yep, I bet that car drive caused a transient elevation in his BP, and I'm curious to know why the cardiologist started him on benazepril.

Hugs, Lori

Lori,
I received the cardiologist's report today. There is so much on it that I have no idea what it means. Raleigh has an appointment next week with the vet to have a lump checked out. I want to ask the vet about some things on the report.

It says: H/L: Grade lll/Vl left holosystolic murmur

BP: 170 mmHg systolic

Diagnosis: Stage B1 mitral and tricuspid valvular insufficiency with no congestive heart failure or hypertension at this time.

Start benazepril 5 mg tab, 1/2 tab sid (to control blood pressure and to reduce cardiac preload and afterload)

2 other meds are mentioned to be reserved for development of a persistent rapid resting/sleeping breathing rate (above 30 breaths per minute) radiographic pulmonary edema.

What medication does your Marvin take for his collapsed trachea?
Is it just to control the cough?
Is there anything to help strengthen the trachea cartilage?

Thanks

Marvin takes Terbutaline and Hydrocodone for his cough, it doesn't take it entirely away especially when he gets excited. As far as I know there isn't a way to strengthen the trachea and the surgery to fix it comes with its own problems. One of the things that is recommended is to replace their collar with a harness, Marvin doesn't mind his harness and when I'm at work I take it off of him.

Thanks for sharing Raleigh's cardiologist report.

Hugs, Lori

Lori,
Thanks for sharing the info.
I heard trachea surgery is not an easy one but don't know details about it.
I've always used harnesses on my pugs.
How old is your Marvin?
I wish him well!

I just adopted Marvin this February, the rescue told me that he was 9 years old but when I took him to my vet for a check up she thought he was closer to 11...so I guess he is between 9 - 11 years old. :)

Bless Marvin's little heart!
Bless you for giving him a loving fur ever home!

If I get any more info about Raleigh from our vet on Tuesday I will post it.

Hugs to you and Marvin

Lori,
I took Raleigh to the vet today to have a couple things checked out.
Turns out one is a wart and the other is a skin tag.
The wart bleeds at times so it had me worried. The vet said we will just manage it.

I asked the vet what the grade Raleigh's heart murmur is. He said it looks like it is a 3 out of 6.

Happy Belated Birthday Archie!!!🎂😊

Sooo many pups Sharlene, so here's a little Update....

Raleigh is the oldest one. He has had some health issues lately.

Scoop is one of our precious angels. He passed one day before Buddy

Archie and Gus are the puppies who joined the family after Scoop flew. Archie is a little older than Gus. Gus will be turning three soon.

That's about it, unless Vicky wants to update us further, or make any corrections.😀

Lori, Thanks for your nice comments on the pictures.

Kathy and Sharlene, Thanks for the birthday wishes for Archie.

Kathy, You're right on!

I don't remember if I mentioned that a couple months ago Archie was diagnosed with Lyme disease. He was on antibiotics for a month. He had bloodwork done the same day as the Lyme test. His white blood count was above normal. After the antibiotics were done his white count was in the normal range. He will be getting retested in the months to come. We have not seen any problems from the Lyme. Hopefully it will stay that way!

Raleigh is doing OK. Hopefully it will stay that way.
When it was hot for a few days he was coughing a little more. The last couple days it's been cooler and he hasn't coughed as much.

Gus is good.

Soon it will be 3 years that Scoop is gone. Still breaks my heart.

Belated birthday greetings to Archie! Thanks for the update on all your dogs.

Good to hear that Raleigh is doing better now. Our first cat had a heart murmur and one of our dogs had skin tags. The same dog used to get effected by weather too.

Relieved to hear that Archie seemed to have recovered from Lyme disease. Always scary when they're sick!

Wishing health and happiness for many years to come for all of your dogs. Hugs!

Allison,
A belated Happy Birthday to your dad!

kanga,
Thank you!
If you are asking about Archie, he turned 3 years old on June 6.
A homeopathic vet helped me with Archie a little over a year ago. His appetite improved so much. He seemed better after having some remedies.

Last summer I started working with a lady who has been giving me advise on nutrition for all 3 of my boys. We hope we are helping to build up their immune systems.

Raleigh had an appointment with his regular vet on Monday. He had been doing a bit of scooting and it was time for his 6 month exam. His anal glands were very full so they got emptied. The vet said Raleigh's heart murmur did not sound any worse. He said as a matter of fact his murmur might sound a slight bit better. (knock on wood) I don't want to jinx it. He is on Benazepril and I have been giving him Animal Essentials Heart Health, which is Hawthorn Berry. Also CoQ 10. He eats cooked hearts which should have taurine that is good for the heart. I have been getting advise with these things.

Now for the collapsing trachea. I was told before Raleigh should lose a couple pounds. That would help the trachea. Well that hasn't happened. He just loves to eat. The vet said 2 things work against the collapsing trachea, age and weight. He coughed more over the summer. Not so much since it got cooler. I asked the vet if the coughing is heart or trachea? He said since it's worse with the heat, it is the trachea. I have to have more will power and not give him so many treats. It's hard to resist that cute face. I know the weight is not good for him.

Archie and Gus are doing pretty good right now.
Archie will be going to the vet Friday to get a C6 and a CBC to check how things are since the Lyme disease diagnosis in the spring.

Just an update on my boys.

Good luck to Archie and Gus. Hope Archies tests come back good.

The vet's office called today with Archie's test results. My husband answered the phone so I didn't talk to them. Whoever called said all of Archie's test results were good. He had the C6 to check his lyme disease and I decided to do a senior blood panel instead of the CBC. I wanted to check his liver values since he had an issue with that before. When he was diagnosed with lyme his white count was high. That's why the vet wanted a CBC.

Raleigh will be getting a senior panel done on Thursday so I will pick up a copy of Archie's while I'm there. Then I can see it for myself.

Hubby's are just so hard to train, huh? :p One would think after a while they would catch on to the simple things...like asking for and writing down numbers. :D So here's hoping when you see the results they match that verbal statement that all is well.

Yea, Leslie! I'm glad I pick up copies of their blood work. I like to see for myself. That comes from doing that with Scoop's tests.

Everything was decent on Archie's. Only thing that was off was his Reticulocytes. This is the 3rd test in a row that they are high. Apparently the vet doesn't think it's means anything.

The vet or someone in the office will be calling Monday with Raleigh's results. I hope I am home to talk to them. I will bring up the Reticulocyte results on Archie's.

Archie's C6 for Lyme/heartworm was all negatives. YAY!
