Hi :)

I have a 7 1/2 year old male beagle named Denver. He has the early on set of Cushings disease. He really does not have any symptoms except for heat intolerance that came on last summer. ( if thats even a symptom, some say it is and some say its not). He had high liver enzymes come back in a pre dental blood test and it went from there. He has a mass on his right adrenal gland, but his left is normal size, which is making us wonder if its pituitary based Cushings with a mass on his gland as well.

Anyhow in all of this happening we got a new puppy. Who of course has a sensitive tummy. So I have done a bunch of research on dog food and settled on Grandma Lucy's Dehydrated food and Merrick Canned food. What I want to know if anyone knows, is this food safe for Denver? I really like that there is a lot of water content,s something I never thought about before ( Denver has always ate Holistic Select Kibble).

Are there things I should stay away from feeding a Cushings dog?

What are people thoughts on Coconut oil?

Would really appreciate advice

Hi Ally, welcome to the forum. Cush dogs usually do best on a moderate protein, low fat diet as they can be prone to pancreas trouble.
You are going to be asked many questions by members on here, so be prepared. Any tests that have been done on your dog, you should have copies of and post results here.
Are you medicating your dog for cushings now? Generally without symptoms, and all the required testing being done, dogs are not medicated.

Hi Ally,

Puppies need puppy, not adult, food for at least the first 6 months of their lives, preferably for the first year. Puppies are changing so very fast every day and puppy feed contain the extra minerals and vitamins they need to achieve optimal healthy growth. If this is a large breed puppy, the only other thing I would caution you about is to avoid feed with added calcium. There has been a fad for a few years that large breed puppies need extra calcium and this is false. Extra calcium can cause serious skeletal issues later in life.

Merricks is a decent feed but I'm not familiar with the other brand you listed.

Hugs,
