Hello all! I have a 14 year old miniature poodle named Lillie with diabetes and cushings. We started her on vetoryl in December of 2012. She is doing really well on it. Every now and then she will have an episode of vomitting and diarrhea, but she is much better than she was before starting vetoryl.

My question is about having vetoryl in my house while I'm pregnant. I know I'm not supposed to handle it so my husband is the one that gives it to her. What about cleaning up after her accidents? She has accidents daily. Has anyone had any complications due to vetoryl? Lillie is my baby so I do not want to interrupt her treatment when she is doing so well.

Thanks for any feedback!

Just to be clear, you are not handling the pills nor cleaning up the poo right? I don't see any issues if not. Others can chime in!

I wanted to inquire about the diarrhea and vomiting - those are both signs that the dose is too high. Have you been having regular acth tests done to monitor the cortisol? If not you really need to. Here's info on vetoryl/trilostane that might help with both issues:

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I think the insert says, not to "handle". Just being in the house shouldn't be a problem.

Agree, make sure you are getting those ACTH monitoring tests done to keep an eye on her cortisol. It might be nothing, but always better to be safe.

You can (and probably should) contact Dechra, the manufacturer of Vetoryl, to find out for certain what precautions you should take. Here's contact info for their U.S. office in Kansas:

Purchase the cheap plastic throw away gloves and wear them while handling the medication and any droppings.
