My beloved golden was diagnosed with cushings a few months ago. He is on 120 vetoryl a day and he still seems to be suffering! His levels read good, but he's thirsty, hungry, and panting constantly. I cannot keep his skin healthy and his coat is brittle. We have already spent 1500.00 in the past few months and my husband is threatening putting him to sleep!!! What can I do? I am completely distraught.

Hi and welcome to our site. I am sorry you and your boy are having these problems.

No way is it time to even think about putting him to sleep. There clearly is something that is not being regulated. If this the final decision at any point, there are rescues etc who would take on a sick dog; but I think we are getting ahead of ourselves here.

So take a deep breath, we are all here for you. How much does your boy weigh? And how old is he?

Have any other medical conditions been ruled out - diabetes, thyroid issues for example?

When you can, post the last result of the ACTH test performed to monitor the cortisol levels. This should have been done approx 10-14 days after starting the Trilo. (here some additional information on Trilo - http://www.dechra-us.com/files//dechraUSA/downloads/Client%20Literature/38965_Technical_Brochure.pdf)

Also, just so you know some dogs are better regulated by splitting the dose and giving it twice a day (i.e. once morning and once evening).

Is he taking any other medication for any other conditions?

Looking forward to the information
Terry

I am so sorry for your situation. I would definitely never let anyone put my dog to sleep. I think you are far from doing that, so lets see if the forum can help you get this figured out. I give my dog Vitamin e for her skin and hair. They can have 150mg a day. Maybe that will help. I also give her Coconut oil which is very good for them according to the vet. I know you have spent 1500. so far and it sounds like your husband is angry and wants to act out on it by putting the dog to sleep, but that is not an overwhelming amount of money to get a dog diagnosed, just so you know. It is a lot of money if you don't have it to spend and I understand that. We have all been there. Maybe you could get some help by applying for Care Credit. They will give you a credit line to help get your dog straightened out. I have one and haven't had to use it yet. I keep it for an emergency. I hope you can get your dog the help it needs. You can also buy your RX's online and save money. There are ways to save money with this problem, so don't give up hope. The initial part is the most expensive, then it gets a lot better after that unless there are complications. Blessings
