Hi ya'll,

On Squirt's thread, Glynda mentioned our new foster. Her name is Josephina, Josie, and she is an AKC Chihuahua with a similar story to Tasha’s. Josie’s mom passed recently and after one son neglected everything including Josie and apparently their mom, the other son came along to take control. He placed Josie on Craigslist where Arkansas Chihuahua Rescue found her and took her in.

Josie was very sick when she got here. Doc B looked her over and found pneumonia, possible CHF and allergies, and probably collapsing trachea – her breathing was so bad and so loud, plus she is very high strung and a biter, that he couldn’t hear very well. We came home on a regime of Baytril, Lasix, Vetmedin, and an antihistamine. After a few days, the wet sounds were gone, her fever was gone and she was breathing with more ease…but nowhere near normal. The rescue’s vet saw her the next week and testing there found her heart and lungs to be in good shape, the fluids were gone. But a “growth that isn’t supposed to be there” was found on or near the heart and a large mass was found in her chest. The mass is pressing against her trachea, severely compressing it. Because of its placement, it is inoperable and the vet says it is too risky to even biopsy to get a definitive of the type of mass. My gut says this was found much too late to try to shrink it but we are trying. Josie gets an Adequan shot every week for 6 weeks, then once a month in the hopes it will strengthen the tracheal rings enough they can press back against the mass, allowing her airway to open a bit more. If the mass grows very much more, it will suffocate her. :( She will have her third shot tomorrow and while it does seem to have helped a little bit, she is still struggling to breath…and the fluid sounds came back yesterday so she is back on antibiotics and the Lasix as of this morning.

I'll keep you informed on her progress.
Hugs,
Leslie and Josie

How kind you are for stepping in to foster this little girl. I'll be here hoping that she improves and everything you are doing for her helps her overcome the health issues she has. Awww...Josie...get better soon!

Hi ya'll,

If we're friends on FB, then you may have already seen this but....

As you know our little Josie has a mass in her chest that is severely compressing her trachea. She has been getting Adequan shots and they did help, but not enough.

Fri. nite, just after checking in with the vet that afternoon to tell him she was doing a bit better, Josie had a very bad episode in which she could not get air - she was suffocating. After she struggled terribly for what seemed like hours but was surely only seconds, she finally got breath. Since that episode, she has been slowly declining until she is now having bad episodes 1-3 times an hour. She is very tired today and no longer has a "dog worthy life". Every breath is a struggle.

After talking with the rescue, they have an ER call into the vet who has been treating her. If he can see her today, we will get her in. If not, we will get her in tomorrow. (If she worsens today or tonight, she will see our vet locally.) Unless Dr. Smith has some trick up his sleeve, Josie will be going to be with her first mom very soon.

For such a tiny thing, Josie has made a huge imprint on this old broad's Soul and I am ever so blessed to share in a small portion of her life.

Oh Leslie, it is god's gift that he has given you such an enormous heart -- so large that it can be broken over and over and still have the capacity to love with such grace and tenderness.

Fare thee well, little Josie. And huge hugs to you, my friend.

Sending tons of love on this sad day.:( Leslie, I don't know how you continue to care for these babies that need so much, but I'm really glad that there's angels like you that do. Josie's mom was waiting for her and now they are reunited again.

I am so very sorry Leslie.
You are such a special lady. Josie, had a wonderful home from which to leave on her final journey. She had days of knowing that she was loved and cared for and that someone thought that she was special. They don't ask much of us to make them so very happy. You give so many the gift of love, home, security and safety. I know it hurts each time one is lost and yet you continue on giving and giving. That takes a very special person, which you are.
Big Hugs
