It's been a few months since we said goodbye to Hamish and we've missed him terribly, however last weekend we decided it was time to welcome someone new, and this weekend we met Henry for the first time, so in 2 weeks time we're starting the puppy training journey for the first time - wish Henry luck, he'll need it ;)

Will now try to post a pic of Henry in my album!

Pics posted - sorry about the quality but he was a bit of a wriggler!

I've stopped by the forum several times over the last few months - I can't really help with advice but I like to see how the other pups are progressing. It's been sad to see those who've crossed the bridge but heartening to read about the progress of others.

I keep trying to write a tribute to Hamish but I'm not the greatest when it comes to words, and he deserves so much more than I can manage, however I'll keep trying.

Oh gosh, what a sweetheart. So little and precious! You just want to cuddle away with him.

You can stop in and say hello any time :)

I surely am glad you posted again and letting us know about Henry - what a cutie pie.

Your little Hamish is watching over all of you and is happy for Henry - who wouldn't be - falling into such a loving and caring forever home :)

AWWWWWW!! Little Henry is precious! I don't envy you the puppy-training, but I do envy the complete and utter joy of falling in love with this new baby. And so a new journey begins!!

Thanks so much for introducing us to Henry and please keep us updated!

It's going to be a hard day tomorrow. After we said goodbye to Hamish I gave a lot of his things to the local SPCA, but I kept some toys etc. because I knew that we'd get another pup at some point. Now I need to unpack the boxes to see what I Henry might like, but there are so many memories - I really must tell myself to focus on all of the happy memories.

Awww, hugs, that will certainly be a hard day. :( Henry though I am sure will love everything. Puppies have that bouncy exuberance going for them.

Well, with collection of Henry planned for Saturday I finally bit the bullet and unpacked the boxes - there were lots of tears, but everything is now (hopefully) ready for his arrival.

He's home :)
I posted some of the pics I took on the journey home - he did great.
We decided to take the scenic route so made a few stops - it was his first time on a leash and he did great. He was a bit tentative at first, not helped by a busy-ish road but after 5 mins just accepted everything and pottered around. On one of the stops there was a field with some alpacas in - he was fascinated by them.

When we got back he was rather vocal about the xpen (taller than at the breeders) but threw some toys around then went to sleep on the floor despite the nice soft bed! He's even done a few dreaming type yelps - I'm in love :D

Hi,
Regarding pee pads...the reusable, washable kind make training so much easier. There is nothing to shred and they hold 10 times more urine than the disposable ones. They wick the urine deep into the pad away from the puppy. The pad stays dry. All you have to do is throw them in the washer with a little bit of bleach and you have clean fresh pads again. I purchased the ones I have at Walmart. The disposable ones work better if you duct tape them down. That should help minimize the shredding danger. Just little tips that I'm learning along the way. I am only using the Pee pads as a backup for when I am unable to take Rosie out. Good luck and happy trainingxxxxx

Henry is so cute. I can't believe how fast he is growing up! Where does the time go?
I love the outward doggie carrier. When the puppy legs get too tired on a days outing, what a great idea.

I bet life is very busy for you. When is it not with a puppy around. LOL

It's actually hard to believe that it's just over 4 weeks since we brought him home!
Think I'll have a trip to Walmart to check out the washable pee pads however my concern is that he may confuse it with his bed ;)
We've tried the xpen with crate a couple of times now and he seems to have this habit of collecting everything (toys, pee pad, water bowl, etc.) and putting them into his crate.

How old is Henry now? When is his birthday? Rosebud was born April 20th. She is a little over 11 weeks. On the 20th, she'll be three months old. She was 10 weeks old when I brought her home. Hugs to you and a belly rub for your cutie pie.:D

Henry is just over 14 weeks now and his birthday is April 6. He was 10 weeks old when we brought him home, same as with you and Rosebud. It just seems longer - sooooo much longer ;)

I just keep wishing that Hamish was here to show Henry the ropes, although not sure it would have worked that way - Hamish adored people but tended to ignore other dogs.

Hugs to you and Rosebud - she's just so snuggly.

We took Henry to the local car cruise last night so I've posted my new favourite pic of him. He was rather vocal during the raffle - think he was asking for a doggy prize!
He had a great time - there was a really massive backfire from one of the cars followed by a load of black smoke which he was totally unfazed by.

Well Henry seems to be following Rosie's lead - we were using Hamish's old travel crate with dog bed on top as a barrier into the study and today Henry managed to jump on top of it, then almost slide off head first into the trash can!!! We had the door open as the cooling / heating isn't great in there, however the door is now closed.
He can already get onto the small chair we have and he now has the sofa in his sights............

I don't think that Rosie has been giving Henry lessons, but she is quite the escape artist!:D As soon as you figure out how to stop the jailbreaks, let me know. Hugs to you and a belly rub for Henry.

Henry went for his rabies shot yesterday - we had to go to a different vet to get the vaccine I wanted, and wait ages as they got an emergency in. I'd planned to wait outside for an hour to see that all was OK but the vet was a bit strange so we drove back to our current vet and sat there instead.
The vet reckoned he needed a fourth DAPP because he had the first at 7.5 weeks (breeder) then second at 10.5 weeks and third at 13.5 weeks. Said he definitely needed one at 16 weeks but I hate the idea of giving him more vaccinations than absolutely necessary, and current vet said it that the first at 7.5 weeks was borderline but should be ok. Arghhh - so now a bit worried and not sure what to do for the best........

Budsters Mom
08-01-2013, 12:07 PM
My vet does 4 sets of Immunizations as a matter of course. Rosie didn't get her first shot until I had her. That was at 10 weeks. She gets one every 3 weeks. Leptospirosis is part if the combination shot. Rosie is NOT getting that! She is not likely to be exposed to it. There has been more adverse reactions to that than any other vaccine in small dogs. None of my other pups have EVER received that! Without the combo shot with Lepto, the immunizations have to be separately mixed. My vet was great about it. He didn't charge any more.

mcdavis
08-01-2013, 01:04 PM
Interesting. Here I had a choice of giving Henry the DAPP plus separate Lepto or DHLPP which included Lepto. I was very clear that I wanted to minimise the vaccines, whilst the vet was pushing everything going (she's somewhat $$$ driven), and separate wherever possible so said we'd do DAPP then Lepto, however I then read up on Lepto and decided against it - as you say the risk of reaction, and also the fact that it provides very limited protection.

The rabies was the one that really worried me - it wasn't required when we were in England then the vet refused to give it to Hamish when he was 15 so I did lots of reading and scared myself big time.

I think I may ask for a titer on the DAPP to see if another vaccination is required.

Budsters Mom

In California, rabies vaccinations are due every three years. They are required by California state law. None of my dogs have ever had a problem with the rabies vaccination. Buddy who was allergic to almost everything, did have a problem with the regular shots and we had to discontinue them. He had no problem with the rabies though. I always hang around for an hour after shots, just in case of a reaction. Buddy went down after a combination shot and almost died. I am overly cautious now.

I hope Henry is better after his acorn incident. These pups will eat just about anything! :o Henry is sure keeping you on your toes. It is tough to stay one foot in front of our little rascals, isn't it? Hugs

mcdavis
08-14-2013, 05:18 PM
Thanks for asking Kathy - fortunately he seemed to recover from the acorn although he's still eating anything and everything in sight. Not sure if it's related, but he's losing his baby teeth.

We've put some netting around the patio area to reduce the number of mosquitoes but this morning when OH took Henry out there was a small bird inside  It flew towards the netting and OH managed to find a gap so it flew out, otherwise a certain little pooch might have tried to catch it.

We took Henry to the beach at the weekend and he got to have a paddle this time so I posted some pics.

He's 18 weeks old past Saturday.....

He was a little unsure of the water at first but it was lovely and warm so after a few tentative steps he was splashing around. We've got a life jacket for him but he's such a wriggler that I think he'll have grown out of it before he gets a kayak trip, but then who knows ;)\

By the way Sharlene it's been a while since we've seen any new pics of Miss Molly........

Budsters Mom

Rosie eats EVERYTHING too! She is especially partial to some little rocks and twigs in the backyard. I will be so glad when she's over that stage! I have no real complaints though. Rosie is fully housetrained now. She runs out on her own to take care of her business. The best thing I ever did was to block off the pool and open the doggy door. She doesn't always get a lot of warning, so running out on her own is working.;):) Thank goodness! My biggest issue is with her monkey skills. She can climb or jump up on almost anything and everything. Keeping her safe is going to be a real challenge. She is still the easiest puppy I have ever worked with. She picks up on everything really quickly.

mcdavis
08-15-2013, 03:09 PM
I really hope he's going to stop trying to eat everything but I was reading about some older cairns who didn't stop  I keep telling Henry that he has to be like his big brother Hamish and stop......

I loved the story about Rosie getting in to her toy box and throwing the toys out. Henry has also discovered that he can get into his toy box, then he digs his way to the bottom trying to find some elusive item! So far he hasn't thrown any toys out but it's probably only a matter of time.

We need to get a new baby gate as the current one is not much taller than his toy box so he's going to scale it soon.

Budsters Mom
08-15-2013, 03:37 PM
Buddy used to eat everything too when he was a puppy. He stopped after a few months. Rosie is starting to spit stuff back out, but she is not consistent. I can't get whatever it is from her either, because she thinks it's a game and starts to run. She will come to me and trade for a small treat though. She has been figuring out if she picks up something she shouldn't have, I'll give her treat.;) I'm not sure that is the lesson that I want her to learn. Sometimes I have her drag short lead when she's outside. That way if she picks up something I can get it from her easier. That seems to well work well.

08-15-2013, 03:39 PM
My Squirt is half Cairn and she ate ammonia nitrate that I was putting on weeds in the yard! In her mind, if it was not actively running away, and pretty quickly at that, it was edible. :p It's very strange to see her being picky in her old age! :D

mcdavis
08-16-2013, 05:53 PM
Oh no - was Squirt OK afterwards? I just wish they had some sort of sixth sense that told them when things were bad for them.

With both Hamish and now Henry it seems more like "if it exists it must be edible" ;)

We've had an interesting few days with Henry - first we decided it was time to get him used to the travel crate as we're planning his first vacation. We started by putting it next to the normal crate then putting treats inside etc. then finally an overnight stay. OH was the first down the next morning and left me a note saying "the crate greeted me at the (doggy) gate then followed me to the treat cupboard" - the crate is very light and Henry has already learnt how to move it :D (a few years ago we returned to a vacation rental to find no crate / Hamish because he'd moved it into another room ).

Henry followed this up by moving it around when he was outside too - we stood it on one end and he started twirling it round like a magician doing a trick. I tried to video both events but the camera was shaking because I was laughing too much.

He also managed to eat a (dry) pet wipe so we kept a very close eye on him but fortunately no ill effects (and it completed the cycle during last night's trip outdoors according to OH!!).

Budsters Mom

I think the travel crate may have to be moved for it's own protection - Henry's most favourite toys are his 2 tennis balls - he carries one in his mouth and kicks the other around like he's playing football (soccer to the non-Brits!), but he'll play the game with any 2 items so a tennis ball + crate is the latest option :D This mostly consists of carrying the ball in his mouth and pushing the crate but tonight he pushed 2 balls under the crate, put another in his mouth, then pushed the crate around - it really was as if he was trying to make them magically disappear!!!
If we're going to get any sensible pics we need to invest in a tripod as we just fall about laughing at him.

I've posted some new pics of Henry - hard to believe he's now passed the 5 month mark and lived with us for almost half his life!! He's getting so big too - both vets he's seen so far have said he's going to be a large cairn  He's definitely got longer legs than Hamish and we've had to get a taller baby gate for the family room.

Henry is now an international traveller as he's had 2 trips to the US - he did incredibly well with the journeys although we had to buy him a nice solid metal crate because he kept moving the travel crate around the rental house. He also woke very early both mornings of the second trip because he could hear some boats, and he wanted us to share the experience......

In other news I've just been told that my degree from an English university does not prove that I can speak / understand English and therefore can apply for Canadian citizenship

molly muffin
09-17-2013, 06:20 PM
What the ... no way! Of course it does, can't you just send in your transcripts proving that you took some English courses, like writing, or anything involving language? That is a whole new requirement on the citizenship application effective Feb, 2013. Which I think is hokey. pfftt..so do they really want you to go and take and pass some english as a second language course that you don't need? I'm irritated on your behalf. grrrr

Oh my, Henry is going to be a big one eh. Now that should be fun. hahahahaa I say that with one hand over my eye, cause I can just imagine all the things he'll think he can reach that he shouldn't. Not counting moving crates around at will. LOL

I'm getting my puppy fixation out on the forum these days. LOL

Yes growing, but still adorable! :) I can just see Rosie and Henry carrying off some diabolical plan. Henry would stand up and be the lookout, while monkey girl hopped, or climbed the fence and made away with the treats. Whether she would share with Henry is another matter! :D LOL. I wouldn't count on it.;) xxxxx

mcdavis
09-17-2013, 09:44 PM
Sharlene, I have a choice of doing an English as second language course (which I could probably teach ;) ) or taking a test to prove I can understand and speak English!! Basically they want a high school diploma but it doesn't work that way in the UK - we take individual exams at 16 and 18 which they don't recognise

I was a bit shocked about the degree though. If they think that a British uni would teach in a different language they've obviously never seen the Brits in Europe :D

The baby gate is extra high (and wide) and Henry has discovered that he can actually jump high enough to get his chin above it (we got it just in time) - I'm sure he's part kangaroo!!! I keep reading things that say he should only walk 5 mins / month of age and shouldn't be allowed to go up / down stairs or jump, but how on earth do I stop him jumping???

I can definitely see Rosie and Henry doing some kind of Bond movie with all sorts of exciting stunts that would have us puppy parents covering our eyes :D

molly muffin
09-17-2013, 09:57 PM
I went through and read the requirement for the English proof and isn't that just silly. I think they wrote it one way (the citizenship application requirements), geared towards non-english or non-french speaking country immigrants and never gave it a second thought about those who come from native, english and french countries. Is it easy enough to find a place to just take the test and get it over with? I think waste of time to do the ESL course.

I heard that too about not going up and down stairs, jumping, etc. Stairs I can see might be controllable but jumping I bet isn't. LOL Especially if there is something on the other side of that gate that is more interesting. Gosh, if Rosie teaches him how to climb over the things....

Not going to happen! :) But I hate the worry or thinking about it till the results are in and delivered. :) 2 weeks hopefully will pass in no time at all

That's great he can entertain himself. Molly does that sometimes, but not nearly enough as she use to. I could use a self entertaining dog this week. She much prefers it though if I get down on the floor with her and we play attack and keep away, her favorite games.

Oops - sorry folks. We took Henry on vacation - we rented a house but he also had his first night in a hotel, and behaved impeccably - just a few barks then settled down and slept through until the bill was delivered the next morning :)
He did just over 3000 miles and slept on our laps most of the time(although wasn't happy in the back seat unless it was mealtime!!).
He had a wonderful time as most of the people he met made a fuss of him (unlike where we live) and there were loads of great new sniffs.
Henry's growing big time - already heavier than Hamish, with longer legs...... will post some pics then catch up on the other pups.

p.s. Got my results today - I passed with the highest possible score (phew!!) of 'Effective or Advanced Proficiency'

ohh, fun, a vacation! I'm sure he had a great time. That's pretty good to get them started young with travel. Molly unfortunately is not a traveling kind of gal, but my golden loved it! Her and my cat, traveled well together, all across North America. :) Great times!

Some new pics of Henry now available :D

When I first took him to the vets they said he would be bigger than Hamish, and I've since been told that the Canadian cairn is bigger than the American and British cairns....... That said Hamish was around 7kgs and I've just heard of a British cairn that is almost 10kgs  (and not overweight!).

Henry is now 7.5kgs  however we're planning a haircut for next week, after which I estimate he'll be around 6kgs ;)

There are moments when he appears to be maturing, however he's a nightmare in the car. Absolutely fine if he can sit on the passenger's lap and have a nap, but wails / whinges as soon as we put him into the rear with a harness or even in a crate on the passenger seat. We've tried kongs, toys, music (he seems to be fond of Thriller and Fade to Gray!), and earplugs :D We've been told to continue to drive until he stops, but when you get to 40 minutes and there's no sign of a respite........ so suggestions very gratefully received.

Sophie is a horrible rider but she LOVES it! She cannot be still nor quiet. She really wants to be able to ride out of a crate but if I allow that, she's jumping all over the truck barking at everything she sees!:rolleyes: In the crate, she whines and moans and groans the whole time. :D But every time she sees the truck door open, she's excited at the prospect of a ride. At her real home, she lives in the country and often gets in the vehicles to ride across the property - short rides with no traffic - and she is allowed to ride free. (Soph is my niece's dog but they don't have a fence and her seizures cause her to act a bit wild so she stays with me where she is safe. ;))

Good luck teaching Henry to ride quietly and easily. I wish I had some suggestions to offer but Soph is the only pup I've ever dealt with who acted this way in the car and I have no idea how to break her of this habit!

I think Molly lost another dog when she got her hair cut today! I went from a fluff muffin to not such a fluffy muffin. LOL

Pictures will be required you know after a hair cut like that!

Molly hates car rides. She is loves to go to the car door, jump up so we'll pick her up to put her in, but then as soon as she is there, she starts the shakes and shivers and acts scared to death. She doesn't do that when I pick her up to bring her home from somewhere, it's just during the leave our house part that she becomes full blown neurotic over the thought of where she might end up I guess.

Well OH just returned from an interesting drive with Henry. He put Henry in the rear seat on his harness and said that there was some crying and whining, but then it stopped around the time a little head appeared between the front seats because his harness had come undone! Anyway he stood with his front paws on the centre console and looked out of the window and didn't make a sound!!!
So new idea is to try a booster seat - just need to find one big enough as they all seem to be for dogs under 10lbs.

Your stories reminded me of Hamish who used to be allowed to roam free in the rear seat of the cars (before we discovered car harnesses) - he was usually very good and only barked if he saw a truck however there was one day we were on a very quiet road he decided to bark at the older couple in the car behind. He went absolutely mad - leaping up and down on the rear seat, barking wildly. This continued for at least 10 miles until we caught up with another car and overtook it and he stopped barking and there was total silence. We were never sure why it happened - maybe the older couple reminded him of my parents? It never happened again.

Hello

After I lost Tia, I didn't want to put Boyce in the boot so I got a product called the back seat bridge, it goes in the back seat to fill the gap between the back seat and front. You can also put a flap up to stop them poking their nose through. That would give him all of the back seat. It is quite hard so Boyce has a blanket and pillow (spoilt much!)

This might be an idea.

So, mystery solved. Henry just wants to be able to see everything going on.

Hamish was so funny. I do wonder what it was about that couple that made him bark so much. Maybe they were just looking at him. If I just stare at Molly she will start making little growly noises and then bark till I stop. Kills me every time!

oh no cold tootsies, better look into those fleece tights!!!

Actually they were probably discussing the badly behaved dog in the car in front ;)

We currently have a hammock over the back seat (suspended between the headrests) but it has a zip in the middle and both dogs have managed to undo it in seconds, and then they end up in the front seats!! The search continues for a large booster seat......

Henry had his first experience of snow today and seems to like it :D

and he goes for "the op" on Thursday - I know it's only routine, but I'm rather nervous about the whole thing. Have lots of onesies because I'm not sure the house can withstand Henry + cone

hahahahaha, I imagine Henry + cone would be an adventure for sure.

So Henry loved the snow eh. :) Molly some days loves it more than others, but not ice, that is not a love at all. :)

Thanks for the tips about the pawz booties. Those are good on ice too? I'd love to have something that gives her some traction, it is scary when she takes a slide on ice. She's at that age where I'm thinking, crud there goes her back or hip. YIKES that wouldn't be good.

Well Hamish didn't tend to run when it was icy but I don't remember him ever sliding and some of the trails are quite steep. I think they are rubber which works well on ice, but I should be able to test them out with Henry in the next few weeks

I missed it. What kind of operation is Henry having? Is he getting neutered?

The Pawz booties are rubber. They are the consistency of very thick balloons. They go on tightly and take some getting used to.

mcdavis
11-26-2013, 01:45 PM
Yes - Henry is being neutered on Thursday so hoping for no complications. I remember when Hamish had his op he was absolutely fine within 24 hours and never bothered with the incision or anything - somehow I think Henry might take a different view.

We actually went one size up on the Pawz bootees (got blue instead of red) as the correct size were quite tight around the leg and caught on the fur when we took them off.

An inch of snow has just fallen so we're off for walkies - looking forward to Henry's reaction :D

Well no bootees today as there was only around 1cm of snow but the good news is that Henry loved it, maybe a bit too much as he kept trying to eat it!! Especially the lumps that had fallen off cars :(

I took some pics, but they weren't very good - I've posted the best one, plus one of Henry cuddled up to me before bedtime.

I just checked outside, and we have some slush coming down. I decided to go ahead and take molly for her walk before it got slick.

Hardly dare say this but so far the onesies seem to be working (after a quick sewing job to make the necks smaller) and my shins are unbruised ;)
However Henry is definitely getting cabin fever and there's still 4 days to go..... We've tried training with stay / leave but he wants to be running around with his tennis balls and jumping all over the furniture, so it's going to get worse before it gets better.

I managed to get a pic of him in his onesie which I've posted - it was a rare minute when he actually sat still.

We got the pics of Henry with Santa so I've put one in his album - note the slight strangle hold ;)

It's now a week since his surgery and the incision is healing well, although he can now undo his onesie in a single move, after which the cone is administered - for one so intelligent it's taking him a while to associate cause and effect!

Tomorrow should be walkies day but forecast is rain

Henry has had a haircut so new pic posted - hmmm, there's a reason Hamish wouldn't let me anywhere near him with the clippers!! (oh, picture quality is appalling - our new camera works great on videos but does strange things to stills - so his fur hasn't really turned orange).

It was my first attempt, and I was rather nervous. It took most of the afternoon and OH was gainfully employed replenishing the peanut butter on the bone we attached to the grooming table ;)

Good news is that Henry adores the snow - he seems to find the sniffs enhanced so spends the entire walk with his nose to the ground, which results in an icy beard that takes quite some washing off!

I really wish I knew what the fascination was - it's not just horses, but donkeys too!! At first we thought he thought they were large dogs but he does seem to differentiate as he doesn't react the same when dogs are on TV!! The TV is on the same wall as the door to the patio, so when a horse appears we hastily change channels whilst he goes to the door and demands we let him out, then cries because there's no sign of them......

Fortunately we only got a thin layer of snow which melted this afternoon - just as well as the temperature is plummeting over the next few days.

Distracted by the zip I miscalculated the stairs :o so OH drove me to collect purse (fortunately restaurant is only 5 mins away) and I am now sitting with a bag of frozen peas on my very sore foot :( feeling very foolish...
Henry was happy though - he was fast asleep until this happened so got an extra treat because I disturbed him ;)

It's the front of the foot / my toes (I tried to go down a stair that wasn't there, so hit the tile rather hard :( ). I can wiggle the toes (albeit rather painfully), so I'm fairly sure it's nothing worse than a sprain. Just as well as 40cm of snow is about to start accumulating, so tomorrow is going to be a snow day and everything is closed, meaning I have 2 excuses / reasons to sit around doing nothing ;)

Well, I haven't been around for a few weeks so I'm now trying to catch up.....
Henry is now 1 (his birthday was April 5th) and is just back from 2 weeks at kennels. He had a wonderful time making lots of new friends, and they said he can go back anytime!! Although he has put on a bit of weight so needs to go on a diet!! That didn't get off to a good start this evening as he managed to get into his food bag, and OH is now in the dog house ;)
He was there because OH and I went to the Mustang 50th birthday celebrations in Charlotte NC, driving via Niagara, Detroit and Dallas where we joined a caravan of over 500 Mustangs who were also making the trip..... I would have taken Hamish had he still been with us, and know he would have really enjoyed it, but thought it was too long in the car for Henry as we covered just shy of 6000 miles.

Oh, wow! I saw that on the news here and thought, "What a grand adventure!" I would have loved to be in the caravan riding in a bright red Mustang with the top down and the music blaring! Back in the late 1970's, I was given a 1965 Mustang hard top that was in mint condition by my then boyfriend's dad. It was an ugly pale green color but ran like a bat out of heck! I drove that thing up and down the CA coast from San Francisco to the northern realms. When we broke up (tho we eventually married) I gave the car back to his dad and returned to ARK. Leaving that car hurt as badly as leaving my man! :p

We were just about to cross the road when a little dog ran up the steps and onto the road with her owner a bit behind. Well OH has to attend a conference so Henry and I came along for the trip. We found a nice rental but unfortunately Henry didn't like it so we had to leave!!! He's now visited 5 rentals - 3 he was fine about, but with the other 2 he just refused to settle and I'm trying to work out why.
The latest turned out to have a nice but rather noisy couple in an attached apartment (came as a bit of surprise) but that wasn't the case for the other one he didn't settle at. Both of the houses were older properties and I was wondering if he was sensing something - any thoughts?

molly muffin
05-20-2014, 09:09 PM
Well that Is interesting and often dogs can sense something that others can't, so nothing is out of the realm of possibilities.

I know some movie people use condo rentals here in Toronto and that seems to work out fairly well with the dogs. If they are okay with condo living in general (not barkers, etc).

It could just be a strange place, strange smells, etc too that makes it harder for him to settle.

If we'd been detached I would have let him bark a little bit to see if he was just telling us that he was hearing new sounds etc. or it was something more, but we didn't want to disturb the other people - they seemed to be very noisy but I think the properties were just really badly insulated.

Eeuuww - just pulled a live tick off Henry and taken it to the vets so they can get it tested (they said ticks / Lyme are really bad this year yet the last snow only melted 5 weeks ago!!!). The vet tech said it looked smaller than most she's seen so I'm really hopeful I got it in time. We have to wait around 3 weeks for the results cos they're inundated with tests.....
However I very stupidly panicked as Henry is off to kennels for the weekend so I got OH to put some Frontline on him, only to discover we should be putting the next dose of Revolution on him next Tuesday :( So now I'm hoping I can hold off the Revolution until the end of next week - arghh I feel so dumb :(
I'm also worried about where it came from - last walk was Wednesday evening cos it's been raining since, so he's only been on the enclosed patio / in the house since then.

labblab
06-06-2014, 11:35 PM
I'm just wondering whether it would be safer to give Henry an oral heartworm preventative on Tuesday, and wait until next month to switch to the Revolution again. Do you usually give him both Frontline and Revolution? Even if you time them differently, it doesn't sound as though there has been any testing done to determine that it is safe to give both these spot-on products during overlapping periods of effectiveness...

http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2111&aid=2616

If Lyme-carrying deer ticks are a chief concern, it sounds like Frontline is the better choice of the two preventatives. And maybe pair that, then, with an oral heartworm preventative that has been proven safe to be given in combination?

Marianne

mcdavis
06-07-2014, 08:02 AM
Thanks for that link. My current vet knows nothing about Frontline (it isn't sold in Canada) so was unsure, however I had read some information that said applied 2 weeks apart they would be OK.
Ticks haven't been a problem in the past - Hamish only got one in the 3 years he lived here, but this year they are really bad.
More research required - my task for the weekend.

labblab
06-07-2014, 09:50 AM
Yeah, I think it would be good to check the combo out further. Maybe it is OK, but it is better to get some credible feedback about that since I've seen reservations expressed in additional sites other than just that one link. Even if in general it's Ok, if it ends up seeming like an issue to combine them within a week's time, I'd personally rather opt for an oral heartworm med "on time" this month rather than delaying giving the Revolution. My vet will sell individual doses of things like Heartgard and Sentinel, so if your vet will, too, you could just alter the course for this month and then return to the Revolution next time around.

Marianne

Not sure whether the internet is a gift or curse - I can find reports that tell me that any combination of medications are good / bad / indifferent!
I'm trying to work out if I can call my old vet (current has no knowledge of Frontline at all as it isn't sold in Canada) as she had mentioned Frontline to me several times. I was planning to take Henry to her for his rabies jabs in a few weeks as I prefer the vaccine she uses. The situation is also complicated by the fact that I need to get his booster and rabies vacs done in the next two months, so need to be mindful of possible interactions with several different chemical :(

mcdavis
06-10-2014, 12:45 PM
Well, I've been reading that Dr Jean Dodds recommends 45 days between Heartworm treatments, instead of monthly, which would mean more time between the Revolution and Frontline Plus, as a number of sources say that they can be safely used together as long as there's a 1-2 week gap.

labblab
06-10-2014, 01:08 PM
Wow, I would really want to have that heartworm recommendation independently verified by an additional authority since it is contrary to other written directives I've seen, including the medication inserts themselves. Can you give us the link to that?

I know that Dr. Dodds has had a long and illustrious career, but in recent years I have been quite disappointed to see her coming forward with some products/directives that lack published testing results and instead seem to just reflect her own anecdotal experiences/musings. I would be really, really cautious about finding other confirmation before spacing out the heartworm treatments.

I found it in a number of locations (all basically the same information), however this is one of the links
http://drjeandoddspethealthresource.tumblr.com/post/46289883129/dodds-heartworm-preventives#.U5cRUbqNTIU

My old vet always used to recommend her, however I think I'm going to call the manufacturers of both products (had planned to do it yesterday but got distracted by the person who appeared to be staking out the house!).

labblab
06-10-2014, 01:34 PM
Thanks for the citation. I think it would be good to investigate further since she doesn't really give any basis for the recommendation. FWIW, I just found a Dogaware article by Mary Strauss that also discusses a 45-day dosing schedule based on original FDA application data, but the article carries this revised recommendation to adhere to a monthly dosing schedule:

http://dogaware.com/articles/wdjheartwormprevention.html

Based on new information regarding possible reduced heartworm preventative efficacy, I strongly advise against giving heartworm preventives less often than monthly.

And I definitely understand why you were distracted yesterday!

Well the Merial / Frontline Plus people were incredibly helpful and told me that the 2 products could be used together providing there was at least a 24 hour gap to ensure they didn't get 'mixed' so to speak. They said the reason it was ok was because the active ingredients for the flea element, which is the overlap, were different.

The Canadian Zoetis / Revolution people however were totally unhelpful.... and basically refused to provide any information about either interaction with other products or application intervals, saying I had to go via the vet.

ETA: Finally managed to speak to the US Revolution people and they said that testing in 1999 showed no contraindications between Revolution and other flea treatments, so recommendation was to leave 24 hour gap between applications of the two products. They also said that they could not advise any application interval other than that shown on the leaflet, so 30 days / monthly.

Poor (green!) OH went to wake Henry this morning and discovered that Henry had had a very nasty attack of the runs in his crate. He decided not to wake me so cleaned up crate and dog as best he could.... serious brownie points for him as he's not the best when faced with such things.
It's continuing so I'm off to the vets to get some of their bland food (I found it was the best option with Hamish under similar circumstances) and fresh air ;)

I'm hoping it's "just one of those things" but it would be the day I need to decide if I should continue with the Dr Tims food I've just completed transitioning him to (I did it over 2 weeks, and he's been on 100% since Monday) or return to Fromm (no issues, just wanted to give him some variety).

Henry's also due to have his booster on Monday, so I need to discuss whether or not we should delay by a few days.

He seems fine in himself but I can't work out what he's got into that's caused it - he went to the groomers on Wed, but I know he wasn't that close to the other dogs there, then we had a short walk that evening and he's been confined to the covered patio since thanks to the rain....

Hope it ends soon, those clean ups are no fun.

I'm wracking my brains to work out what he could have got into, but yesterday he was only in the house and on the covered patio (we had heavy rain / thunderstorms) so the opportunities were limited.

It was fortunate I got the food from the vet - just after OH got home he had a bit of a play then vomited (just yellow, so probably caused by the fact the had nothing on his stomach) so I have given him a small amount of food to see how he copes. Keeping everything crossed.....

Surely hoping that Henry is doing better by this morning! Sometimes it can be so hard trying to figure out what sets off one of these GI episodes. Since his food is the only known thing that has changed recently, I guess it might be suspect. Is the nutritional profile pretty similar to his old food? But the food may also just be a coincidence and have nothing at all to do with it. My dogs are famous for sprouting a problem right after I've bought them a giant bag of food, and I'm left wondering whether to keep giving it to them or not. :o

Anyway, hoping that all is well this morning and the whole issue will be moot!

Well, nothing happened overnight but every limb is still crossed.

We moved from Fromm Gold puppy food to Dr Tims Kinesis adult so the new food is 1% lower protein, slightly lower fat, and similar calorie count. The proteins are different - Dr. Tims is chicken meal / herring meal whilst the Fromm is duck / chicken / lamb. We did the transition over 2 weeks so he's only been on solely Dr. Tims for 4 days, but it's been the majority food for at least a week and half.

After the BB problems with Hamish I just want to know if it's the food so I can find an alternative, or something else

Did you buy the Dr. Tims at the pet store or online? I never heard of that brand. Tipper is eating Fromm's also, but I noticed it does give her gas at times. She eats the senior reduced calorie. The protein is higher than other foods in this brand. Has this just started with Henry? Blessings

I gave Hamish the Fromm reduced activity (I was never allowed to call it 'senior' :D ) and he did really well on it, which is why I started Henry on Fromm puppy food and my plan was to rotate Fromm / Dr. Tims so he had a bit of variety. I bought the Dr. Tims online - it's not available in Canada, and only in stores in some areas of the US.

So far today, so good - I'm fairly certain it's something he ate because he's been totally fine in himself the whole time.

ETA: as he was feeling better he was allowed a new bone - new pic with his new bone.....

mcdavis
06-23-2014, 05:43 PM
Spoke too soon - we gave him one of his charcoal bones (which he's been eating for the last 3-4 months as a treat) and after a short walk he had another upset. It's unlikely to be the charcoal bone, but things had been OK earlier, so who knows    He's absolutely fine in himself - running around and playing with his toys.

molly muffin
06-23-2014, 08:15 PM
*sigh* well of course he did. Just when you think it's safe again...tada!

Might lay off the charcoal bones for a bit, not that I think they are causing the upset. Google confirms they are good for gastro upset in fact, particularly good for dog farts (most important people to know this!!) and good for gastro upset, however, maybe they just helped moved things along in there.

Henry says Thank You for your compliments :)

Unfortunately the trip on the beach caused a case of runny poops - poor OH ;)

Also for the last few days he has been shedding loads of fur, even though cairns aren't supposed to shed (I know all dogs shed a bit but Henry has shed more in a day than Hamish did in a lifetime!). I'm wondering if it's the heat, although it has started to cool a little here over the last few day
We've been raking him and I don't think it's allergies because he isn't scratching / licking his paws (or anywhere else), his skin isn't dry or flaky, and there's no smell, although there is a small bare-ish patch on his tail (less than 1cm right around the tail which just seems to have the wiry coat without undercoat), but that's been there since last summer. We changed his food a few months ago (from Fromm to Dr. Tims, just for a bit of variety) but I can't think of anything else which could be causing it?

Probiotic and some fiber worked to clear Molly's poops up yesterday.

hmm try putting him back on his Fromms food and see if that helps the fur loss is probably what I'd do. That way just in case it is some ingredient in the Tim's food that he is having a reaction to? Maybe take him for a check up, stool samples, etc, to make sure he didn't pick up some parasitic thing or something at the beach?

Fortunately the runny poops cleared - he tried to drink the sea water but I thought we managed to pull him away in time, however I think he may have eaten a bit of sand because his face was covered in it!!

Thinking about it, he shed when he was on the Fromm too but we thought it was because he was losing his puppy coat. It seems to stop when he's clipped, and start when the fur starts to grow - maybe I'll just have to keep him short. OH will be happy as he prefers his fur short.

Well, we decided to see if Henry was allergic to chicken so started the process of transitioning him from Dr. Tims to Fromm Four Star lamb & lentils on Tuesday but since then he has got itchier so we've decided to back out of that one and rethink.

We also had a bit of a scare last night when I found three red urine drips (around the size of a nickel), so I booked a vets appointment but since then all has been normal so I have cancelled the appointment as there's nothing to see and no sample to take!

Maybe it was just that he had a very busy day yesterday as we did a car cruise where he was the star  I'll post some pics.

These itchy little dogs are a challenge, aren't they? :o I've tried to change Rosie's kibble because she doesn't like it much and have had to change it back several times.

I gave her about a tsp. of pumpkin to add a little fiber yesterday. She's scratching a little and chewing on her legs today. Unfortunately, I don't know if it's the pumpkin or something else. She has flea allergy dermatitis. It only takes one flea to make her scratch like crazy. I went over her really well with a flea comb, but didn't find any. I gave her another teaspoon of the pumpkin this evening, so I'll see what happens tomorrow. Buddy was allergic to pumpkin. Maybe Rosie is too.

I hope you're able to find something that works well for Henry. Having the itchies is no fun.:o xxx

08-31-2014, 10:30 PM
oh dang, that is difficult to try and narrow down sometimes.
What about trying a salmon or something else? Or get him allergy tested? Would they able to do that and narrow down what is bothering him maybe?

Oh yea, the blood in the urine would worry me too. Glad it seems to be gone. When Molly has had that happen, it is usually a UTI, but if they have any crystals, etc, it can aggravate the lining causing blood sometimes. So, might be worth it to get a urninalysis done.

08-31-2014, 10:46 PM
Well, I've decided to take him for a urinalysis - will call vets and try to get an appointment for Tuesday.

In the short term I'm going back to the Dr. Tims because the shedding it seemed to cause had no impact on him, whereas the Fromm is obviously causing him discomfort at the very least. He's been chewing his paws and scratching since yesterday.

Which interestingly is the same time as the blood in the pee appeared! It may just be coincidence but I do wonder if the two things are related - any thoughts?

molly muffin
09-01-2014, 12:43 AM
Well I'd like to say I do, but alas, it wouldn't be true. There might be something that is a connection affecting blood in the urine and itching but I'm not sure what it is or would be. Maybe one of the others have some ideas. But it is definitely worth mentioning to the vet.

If Fromm were one of the lesser feeds I would be worried about contamination in it that might harm the kidneys, like some feeds last year, but I expect much more from a feed the quality of Fromm so I would be more apt to look at either an UTI or crystals first.

The itchies does sound like it could be from the Fromm tho if it started after the switch so I would get him off of that for that reason. ;) ALTHO, dealing with the itchies, I have learned, is not as easy as dealing with Cushing's! LOL There really is **nothing** straightforward with allergies!

mcdavis
09-01-2014, 07:00 PM
No Fromm today and whilst he's still licking his paws a bit, it's already less than yesterday. Obviously there was something in that food that just didn't work for him.
The appointment for the urinalysis is booked for Thursday - earliest I could get with one of his usual vets, however I will try to get hold of the other tomorrow and see if I can get an earlier appointment (everywhere is closed today because of Labor Day)

09-03-2014, 07:17 PM
Well, Henry was definitely allergic to something in the Fromm pork & lentil. We started the transition last Tuesday evening at 30% and reached 40% by Saturday at which point he was chewing his paws and scratching like crazy. We went back to just Dr. Tims on Sunday and as of today, no more scratching / licking.

We see the vet tomorrow as they had an emergency on Tuesday so our appointment got moved. Fortunately we haven't seen any more blood in his urine, and we've both been on pee patrol, but I still want to get him checked.

Well the urinalysis came back totally clear for infections, but they did say that his urine was very concentrated. I think it may be because I wouldn't let him pee before the vet visits.
That said he's always been a bit strange about water - some days he just refuses to drink and other times he suddenly notices the water and drinks like he's not seen it for 6 weeks!!

molly muffin
09-04-2014, 10:28 PM
Molly isn't a big water drinker either and as concentrated urine. You have to watch the ph with dogs like that or it can get off and crystals develope. That said I am thrilled that Henry is okay. No infection. Sounds like he has an allergy though to something in that food. Did the vet have any idea of what might have caused the blood that day? Wonder if it was allergy or could be allergy related. Hmmm

Good job staying on top of the food and urine. They sure know how to worry us.

The vet didn't have any suggestions (she's not big on speculation, and doesn't like to discuss anything other than facts!) but I am wondering if he managed to scratch that area when he was itchy from the food. I had his claws done a few weeks ago but he managed to leave a lovely scratch on OH's leg (through fairly thick trousers) earlier today, so could possibly have made somewhere rather more delicate bleed.

In other news Henry is a TV addict - he will sit and watch TV then stand on his back legs to bark at anything remotely resembling an animal!! For some reason he's particularly fond of Eccles (on Coronation St!!).

Budsters Mom
09-06-2014, 11:23 PM
Buddy loved to watch animals on TV too! Rosie could care less.

It looks like we both have a couple of allergy dogs. I am used to the trial and many errors thing. Buddy was much worse than Rosie. He had asthma also, not just the itchies. Rosie doesn't have any of the breathing issues, but allergies continue to be a challenge. She is doing very well for now.

So glad that Henry's urinalysis came back clear. Wooo hooo!! :p

We took Henry to Maine for the weekend and he did some shopping!! His favourite Tractor Supply were having a pet charity weekend with loads of stalls (and dogs) so he got a Union Jack bandana from the lovely people at the Pomeranian Rescue stall (and made a new friend). He also got a bandana advertising the charity weekend which he wore when we went to the dog park so the people we met there said they'd check the event out.

We also took him to Freeport where every store except LL Bean is pet friendly so he had a great time - he loves Tommy Hilfiger because the staff make a big fuss of him. We also took him into Orvis where he chose a new basket - he decided the one he wanted, and every time we showed him an alternative he just walked through it to get to the one he had selected and laid down - the staff and other customers thought it was hilarious. When we went to pay he laid down in the basket so they told me to just pull the tag off, then OH picked Henry and basket up and carried them to the car.

He also managed to find a car show (OH was soooo happy!!) and have an ice cream. He slept most of the journey home in his new basket on the back seat of the car :D

We had our first walk of the season in the snow today and Henry loved it, although he was less keen on the paw rinsing when we got home!

However I need your help. When drying him we discovered a small lump at the base of his penis. It's around 2cm across, hard to the touch, seems to have a small head (hard to tell), doesn't seem to be attached / moves a bit, and touching it does not bother him, nor is he scratching or licking it. I've posted a picture of it in his album.

The earliest appointment I could get at the vets is Tuesday, but I'm wondering if I need to try and find an ER??

Budsters Mom
11-15-2014, 07:14 PM
Although I know less than most, I'd wait until Tuesday, unless it starts bothering him or he can't leave it alone. Even then, I would probably wait, but would cover it with a onesie to keep him away from it. A onesie would be so much better than a E collar. They hate those things and I don't blame them.

It's probably just a little abscess and nothing to worry about.I refuse to think of the notion that it could be something else. It is better to have it checked though, mainly for your peace of mind.;)

We managed to get into the vets today. When I pulled a tick off Henry's neck last week it left a lump which was still there today, then the vet found another tick I'd missed  (seriously I feel like the worst dog owner in the world) near his ear, and his temperature is 39.5 so she thinks the lump near his penis is a tick bite and she is treating him for possible Lyme :( even though he tested negative for it today.

He has Metacam liquid for 2 weeks plus Doxycycline for a month, then a Lyme test. She said the treatment for the lump on his neck would be 3 weeks anyway. Any thoughts on the meds please?

Dixie'sMom
11-17-2014, 11:30 PM
Hi and hello to you and Henry. I don't have any thoughts on the meds, but I can tell you that tests for Lyme disease have a very high rate of false negatives. There is very little of whatever chemical circulates through the blood with Lyme that they almost never get a sample of it. So the prophylactic treatment is an extremely good idea. Kudos to your vet.

molly muffin
11-17-2014, 11:56 PM
Well I don't know diddly about lyme disease medication either.
So, you know me and I know you and I bet you have done the same searches I have, but I did find this one which is somewhat reassuring

doxycycline is an inexpensive drug that has been used safely for many years in pets and humans. If it were the pet I loved, I would put it on the medication - if only for peace of mind. The down side of not treating is just too great to worry about the very small chance of side effects or a treatment that was, perhaps, unnecessary. I would probably also extend the medication for an additional month if the pet tolerated it well. http://www.2ndchance.info/lyme.htm

Now is Henry having joint pain? Is that why he is on the metacam?

How is he doing? How are You doing?

big hugs to you and Henry

mcdavis
11-18-2014, 11:18 AM
Oooh - I hadn't found that link yet, so Thank You. There's loads of good information there.
There's no sign of Henry having any joint pain - the vet said the Metacam was to reduce the lump / swelling on his neck, whilst the Doxycycline was for the Lyme.
So far he's doing well - we coated the pills in pumpkin and he's eaten them, and with a joint effort we managed to get the metacam into him. He's been drinking more which seems to be a good thing as I read it helps with the metacam.

According to the vets the prevalence of Lyme is increasing where we live, however we were in Maine last week and it is very prevalent across New England. I was reading that it is actually named after the village of Lyme CT where it was first identified.

The first tick Hamish got was from a trip to Scotland after our vets stopped selling Frontline and started pushing Advantage. I had no clue what the grey lump on Hamish's head was so asked the dog walker who told me it was a tick but she was too squeamish to remove it. The vets then told me he could die if not treated within 24 hours but our neighbour's son, who lived in Kenya, pooh-poohed that and pulled it off, much to Hamish's horror and the poor chap got a growl for his trouble! The vets got a mouthful, and returned to selling Frontline!!!
and OH goes rather pale, so it's yours truly who does the tick removal these days (bare hands - the plastic thing is just too fiddly!!)

We're now on day 3 of the metacam and antibiotics and the lumps are getting smaller :)

Good to hear from you - I hope all is well with you. Sorry I've been a bit AWOL - have a dance test coming up, and I'm suffering from girl flu ;)

Henry is doing well. The lump turned into a nasty scab and finally disappeared about a week after he finished the Metacam, however he's still taking the antibiotics (it's a 30 day course). The vet wanted to retest for Lyme this week but I'm leaving it until after Christmas when he's finished the full course of antibiotics, plus the first test was negative and it would be 3 months before he would need another course of antibiotics should it be positive.

We got rain - over 10cm in 24 hours  so still have lots of flooding / roads closed. Henry absolutely hates the rain - he stands on the doorstep and refuses to budge (and this is a covered patio, although rain does blow in!) until we give him a gentle shove!!

He had so much fun running around and playing in the snow (there was about 2-3 inches) that he's now fast asleep in his basket. He made friends with a group of young ladies - Hamish loved charming the ladies, so we told Henry his big brother would approve. ;)
I posted a pic in his album.

oh, and re-try on the dance test (the PC version of I failed!!!)

Wow look at Henry go!!! He's just a bundle of energy. I am sure he was exhausted after all the fun at the beach.
Now what girl could possibly resist that charmer. He's just adorable. Hamish must have given him some pointers. hahahahah

Bah humbug on the PC test version, I bet you'll pass that test in no time at all.

We're expecting that big storm that's tracking up the US and Canadian East coast and we wanted to tell everyone in it's path that we hope they stay safe and aren't badly affected.

Plus we thought we'd just share this slightly different take on the storm http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-30995619
Henry says he's very grateful for the covered deck.

We've had quite a bit of snow in the last few days, so I've just posted a picture showing Henry trying to see over the top of the snow piles on our yard. Sorry it's sideways - I'll try to get that sorted out

Oh, and we have another 2 feet of snow forecast for tomorrow so it's not going to get any better any time soon!!!

I saw you had popped up online e today I hope you aren't getting g hammered with all these storms hitting the east coast. Sounds pretty wicked Every time I turn on the news!

Good to hear from you both - hope you're all doing well. I realised I'd missed Buddy's birthday and wanted to drop by to let Kathy know we were thinking of him. I haven't been around much as I gave myself tennis elbow by sleeping oddly. It's getting better but there are still times when I do the wrong thing :(

Our snowfall total so far this season is over 8 feet  so it's making life interesting. They do a great job of clearing the trails so I can walk Henry but getting to them on roads which are only 1.5 cars wide can be interesting (although I used to drive plenty of roads like that when we lived in the UK ;) ). I posted some pics so you can see what it's like at the moment.

beautiful landscape. but 8 feet...brrrr.
[you can send it to sharlene, she loves it, ha, ha!]
we only had a few inches this "'winter"'.
like last year, no winter at all. 2013 we had lots of snow till april.
snowdrops and crocusses are already blooming in my garden.......

Actually I don't mind snow. It's just that we had so much in a short time that they couldn't remove it fast enough!! Fortunately we have a good service that blows the snow from the driveway and OH does a great job of clearing the deck for Henry. Given my arm I know how lucky I am and I really feel for people who aren't physically able to clear the snow - it must be a nightmare for them.
As they say, best thing to do is embrace it - we went to the park today and it was full of people x-country skiing, skating, snowshoeing etc.

i like the snow too, but not too much in a short time. like you all have in the north east and canada.
and when it first melts and then freezes over it can be very dangerous.
but fresh snow is beautiful to watch.
we have rain and hail now today and some nights a few degrees of frost.
have to walk the dogs, it is 11.11 pm now.
stay warm, and for henry; lots of fun in the snow!

Have to say freezing rain / hail / sleet is the most frightening weather to me so hope you and the dogs stay safe.

I do miss the snowdrops, crocuses and especially the daffodils in the Spring - I hope yours survive the frosty nights.

flynnandian
02-22-2015, 08:36 PM
don't you have those in canada in spring? or is it too cold?
so far they look good [despite the hailstorm we had today], but they want some sunshine..........

We usually have (lots of) snow on the ground until the end of April so there's not much opportunity to plant Spring flowers. :(

flynnandian

move back to england so you can have your spring flowers........

I like snow on christmas eve, then frankly I'm done. LOL I'm a warm weather gal and I don't really think that is ever going to change. Give me California and Hawaii, all places I've lived for long periods of time and I'm a happy girl. I like to drive to the snow and when I'm done with it, drive home to sunshine and warmth. LOL

Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I've just spent the last few days catching up on the pups, then realised I needed to share some pics as it's Henry's second birthday today. Our yard still has 6 foot high snow piles  so I put some snow shoes on and took him for a walk then he had gravy on his dinner followed by an extra large plastic bottle to play with.

Well we still have a few snow piles but took Henry for a trip to the beach at the weekend. It was windy with lots of waves which he barked at - a change from his first year when he ran away from the sea ;)

It's finally cooling down so I took Henry to the beach yesterday and then on the local trails today, only for him to get something sticky (a thistle???) stuck between his paw pads :( We've just spent the last few hours bathing his paw, rubbing the area with paw wipes, and cutting the stuff out - not sure who's most traumatised.

Budsters Mom
09-23-2015, 10:38 PM

He does like going out in the car - tells me how much he's enjoying himself and commenting on everything he sees ;)

Squirt's Mom
09-25-2015, 07:38 AM
That's good it's out and he's not bothered by it or where it was. We have a grass here called Foxtail that has burr-like barbed seed heads. Those seed heads will get caught on anything and if flesh is available will work their way inside a body. We had a pup years ago who got one in it's nostril and had to have it removed; another got one in it's leg that went unnoticed an it had to have surgery to remove the Foxtail from inside the leg. These seed heads can kill a pet if not found and removed.

molly muffin
09-26-2015, 12:00 PM
Eeek that sounds like a nasty paw day. Glad you got it all out.

I know those foxtails Leslie mentioned are awful. Very dangerous.

Glad you and Henry are both recovered from the trauma. LOL It Is lovely weather to be out at the beach.

And how is our supertrooper Henry doing? Hope you are well.
We're having a super warm December so far. It's almost weird how warm it is. I'm so not complaining though and molly oves going for walks on a cool but not too hot or too cold of day.

Hello Sharlene. I just saw your message :). I'm not getting much time to check out the forum at the moment as we're having to move at short notice thanks to a financially inept landlord  so whilst Henry is generally doing well he's absolutely hating the packing process (almost as much as me!!!) whilst slowly developing cabin fever thanks to a reduced walk schedule (both of us!). I pop in when I can, but never seem to get the chance to write much :(
I'm keeping everything crossed that we'll keep the warm temps and not have snow until we've moved......

Will post some new pics of Henry so check out his album

i am sorry that you have to move because of an inept landlord.
most dogs don't like changes in their daily scedule.
did you find a nice new place? i hope so.
i hope it will be a nice neighborhood for henry to walk in.
i will go and check the new pics in your album.
good luck with the move!
p.s. it is very warm over here too. today it was 13C.

Well, it'll be snowy when we move as we had some today, but hopefully not too much, and it's better than moving in March!
We're lucky that we've managed to find somewhere at such short notice although it's rather annoying that the landlord is feeling no pain

I'm new to Henry's adventures, having just joined in the spring after our adopted dog Gizmo died. Henry looks and sounds as if he has the same zest for life as Gizmo.

Right now, we're going through kitten adventures, having just adopted a stray one in the summer. I enjoyed reading all the escapades of raising Henri as a puppy. Now he's two!

mcdavis
12-20-2015, 04:04 PM
Oooh kitten adventures sound like a lot of fun, but not sure what Henry would make of a kitten :)
Well, Henry had a bit of an adventure yesterday. He's been a bit neglected thanks to the packing so I suggested we take him for a walk in the afternoon. In the morning OH decided to take him across to the workshop to help with the packing in there, however just as OH opened the door Henry decided he didn't want to go inside and backed out, managing to back out of his harness at the same time
On discovering he was free he proceeded to play on the back yard, then the front, with OH trying to work out just how to catch him. He then set off up the street, then across the next one and up towards the walking trail I normally take him to. When he got onto the trail he stopped and OH called him and he went straight to him - phew! OH said he was quite impressed that throughout the whole adventure Henry stayed to the side of the roads.....
He slept well yesterday afternoon!!

Henry and I are just popping in to wish you all Happy Holidays.

The move into the new house is complete, we've got all of the stuff out of the old place, and now we've escaped to a vacation rental for a few days to recover! Henry cried a bit the first night at the new house when he was in his crate (he doesn't like to be with us overnight!), then less the second night, so hopefully he'll be OK. I also took him for a walk around the neighbourhood and once the snow clears we'll get an area of yard fenced for him so it'll be better for him than the old place.

Oh and new place has soft dark wood floors which aren't going to survive a month with a dog......

molly muffin
12-26-2015, 05:13 PM
Happy Holidays!!!

I do hope the new house will work out for all of you. :)

A yard would be way cool. :) Those dark floors, well, tricky to stay the least. LOL

We've had amazing weather so far but I think it's about to change to winter for real. Poor molly is not going to be too thrilled with that, but I bet Henry will be rocking the snow as usual.

So Henri is an escape artist! I'm glad he's safe.

Our toy poodle, Barnaby, isn't quite sure what to make of our kitten either. She does get him to eat though, which we like. He's at the finicky age.

May you have a blessed 2016.
