Dear Barbara,
I am so sorry to hear your mom's time here is winding down. It is a tough thing for a child to come to grips with...and we are forever children when our parents are involved. When my mom reached this stage one of the nurses told me her Spirit was separating from her body, preparing for it's Journey. As her body shut down, her Spirit was becoming more and more alive. Its job here was done and it was going back Home, to the Great Source, from whence it came. This familiar body no longer had need of its Spirit. It is so hard for us to see because that body, that shell, is the part we know so well, the part we relate to our mom. Tho the Spirit will live on, the one that carried it whom we love so dearly will no longer be present in our world. In time, it is the Spirit that remains strong in our minds and hearts while often the memories of the body will fade. We may forget features of that face we love but we find the memories of who and what they were become stronger and more clear over time. That Spirit lives on forever.
Many hugs,
Leslie and the gang

Thank you everyone so much! I really appreciate all the posts and all the support. Hospice came tonight and they'll be around a few hours a day along with our fantastic caregiver who has been helping our family for 6 years now. So lucky for all the help and that my mother can be in her own home.
I'll let you know what's going on. Happy to have Trixie here next to me...nothing like petting a dog to help you through anything.
Thanks again for all the kindness. xo

Barbara,
This is so hard! I know, we hate to see them hurting but can't bear to lose them either. I am so glad that you have adequate help because for a time, we did not when mom had Parkinson's. I still don't sleep well. I guess it's left over from laying awake at night listening for her to fall.
Our furlets comfort us so well, don't they.

I am so saddened to hear your mom's journey is coming full circle. It is so hard to deal with when a parent is ready to go with God. Know that I am thinking of you and saying a prayer for you and your mom. You are a living example of her here on earth, and you will remember her each and every time you look in the mirror. God Bless you both.

Thank you everyone for thinking of me.
My mother died this past Saturday morning, peacefully at home. I didn't make it out to her house in time, but I believe she was ready to go. She wasn't alone...my brother and her wonderful caregiver were there by her side though she was not awake..just sailed off in the morning as the sun was shining through her window.
She had such a will to live and didn't give up until the last few days. She was 93, she and my dad, who passed away 3 years ago were married 64 years..they had grandchildren and great grandchildren and a great life. All that said...I'm still sad to lose her. Our goal to keep her in her own home until the end was met.
We are having the service this Saturday, (a long wait but we have travel logistics for relatives). I have to leave the dog during the day with the woman who has watched her before. She has not been left without one of our family since she's had Cushings.
I am feeling so stressed about it! It's only going to be from 10-6, so I know I'm making a mountain out of a molehill but my nerves are shot. I just hope it doesn't get too warm that's all. I'll be giving her the morning dose of meds before I drop her off. I keep telling myself that even if Trixie has a day of symptoms it's just going to be one day, right?
Thanks again for everyone's thoughts and prayers...what a kind group and it means so much to me to have you all here!

Barbara, sending you great big loving hugs. This is a horrid stressful time. It just is. That is a good way to go though, in your own home, having a nice sleep with the sun shining in. It doesn't make it not hurt though, because it's still your mom.
Trixie probably knows something is up, but she'll be okay. I'm sure whomever you have look after her will do a great job. She'll be super happy to see you once you are back. :)

Oh Barbara,
It is always hard to lose a loved one whether they're ready to go or not. It sounded like your mother had a full and fulfilling life with many loved ones surrounding her. I am so glad you were able to leave her in in her house where she wanted to stay.
It is only one day. Trixie probably knows that something is up but she will be okay. She'll greet you as if she hasn't seen you for years! Gotta love that! After all, she knows the person that will be taking care of. She will probably have a wonderful time tricking her sitter into giving her undivided attention every minute. ;)
Sending tons of love and many hugs your way. Xxxxxxx

Hi Barbara
So sorry to read the news of your Mom passing. Such a sad time for you all while you reflect on her life and the hole she now will leave in yours. But it sounds like you have a lifetime of memories and I hope you find some solace sharing them when your extended family and friends have all arrived to get together for her service.
Your little Miss is going to be just fine for the day, she has been good lately and she will be waiting for your return with that joy they always have when they see us again :)

Dear Barbara,
I logged on today to read your thread and was so sad to read about your mom. It is so hard and I send much love and prayers to you and your family. I am going through something similar, as you know.
There are no words to heal your heart right now but if you need to talk, I am willing to be a shoulder to lean on.
I am so very sorry for your loss.
My sincerest condolences on the passing of your Mom.
How wonderful it was that she could be in her own home with all the care, love and support possible.
Will be thinking of you in the next few days and especially on Saturday.
Your baby will be just fine, and glad to see you when you get home.
Take care of yourself now during these next few sad days.
Hugs to you.
Barbara,
I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. It sounds like she had a beautiful life, but I know that doesn't make the loss any easier. How wonderful that she was able to remain in her own home. I pray that we will be fortunate enough to have that for my Mom when the time comes.
I know you are worried about leaving Trixie, but she is doing well right now thankfully, and it sounds like it will be for just a few hours, and she won't be alone. I know she will be just fine.

Many thanks again to everyone for all the thoughts...it's so appreciated. The service for my mother was really beautiful. It was outdoors at her graveside, the weather was perfect..the cemetery is an aboretum and very beautiful. My parents are now both buried beneath a canopy of trees which were so pretty with Fall foliage. We had beautiful flowers-all pink and white, my mom's favorites and a classical guitarist to play the music. My husband and the minister from my mother's church each did a eulogy. Kind of hard to walk away at the end, but it all went as I hoped it would. I think my mother would have approved.
Funny thing...I looked on google maps and if you start at my parents graves and go directly south in a straight shot you will be exactly in the den of their house where they sat every night to watch TV, that's kind of comforting.
On to Trixie. Everything went just fine with the dog sitter. As always I have a lot more problems with the anticipation of dropping her off than I do actually doing it. The sitter was at the door when we got to her building and Trixie was fine, there were two other dogs and Trixie likes company. When we picked her up in the evening she was so hyper it was like she got shot up with a triple dose of cortisol. Going crazy in the car greeting us...ugh, she was wild. Came home drank up a storm and later on passed out with exhaustion. She woke up around 3am panting away. I had to chalk it up to the day. On Sunday she was really much better but so tired. It's the first Sunday in a long time that I was here to go on the park walk. She's always up for that and the rest of the day she was really tired, which was fine with me.
Yesterday we were back to crazy behavior as a few friends were in to visit and one spent the night here. Trixie drank, panted etc...I see she really gets her symptoms back when she is so over excited. I'm happy to say that today we are starting to get back to a normal routine and she is calm, not drinking and doing just fine.
I have to schedule an acth for her. I have so much to do out at my parents home. It is loaded with stuff. We already started on some closets but it's going to be a big job.
I have to catch up with all the posts...hope all pups are doing well!!
Thank you all!! :)

I am sorry for all you have to go through with the house etc. I am sure it will be a lot of work, as older people accumulate so much. Glad Trixie is getting back to normal and survived the dog sitter. It is great to hear from you and know that we all missed you greatly. You and Trixie will have to get back to your routine now. HI Barbara
Lovely to see your post. What a send off you gave your Mom, it sounds absolutely fitting and peaceful. That is nice they are in such a direct line to their home, they must have been so much time there together and now lie side by side under a beautiful tree, just perfect :)
Gosh clearing out their house will be a trip down memory lane for you, such a big job with so many emotions bubbling up so do take your time and don't rush yourself.
That Trixie does like to get herself worked up when the routine gets a little out of the ordinary, but a lot going on in your life right now and I bet she picks up on that. Pleased to hear she was good with a little normalcy creeping back in. Enjoy your walks, I always find it is such a good time to distress and clear my head and smile at the antics of the doggies:).
Big hugs for you to welcome you back to your family here xxxxxx

Barbara, so great to hear from you. The service sounds like it was just lovely and what a beautiful setting. That is very special about the straight line to their living room. Who would have thought such a thing.
Yes, you are going to be super busy, and some of it will be easy and some hard, so definitely as Trish said, take your time. Breaks are mandatory! Walks in the park on a Sunday, what a treat that is for you and Trixie! Don't you think every day in the park just has a different vibe to it.
Trixie is so funny, I'm sure she is having a great time and then just has to recuperate like all of us from the activity. I wouldn't actually do the ACTH test until she has had some normalcy to some days, and not a bunch of hyper activity. I don't know if that would play a factor but it could.
Thinking of you,
hugs,
Sharlene and Molly Muffin

Hi Barbara, I know what a big job it is taking care of everything after a parent dies.
When my husbands grandmother passed, we had to go down to NYC to clean out her stuff. Luckily my Mother in law had already cleaned the house, but there was still a HUGE amount of just stuff! I couldn't believe that one little ole 90 some year old woman could have that much. We stored most of it in the storage place on Long Island, I think it is Moishe's. Then another trip down to have the appraisers go through that, then finally a huge truck to bring it all up to my house in Canada, where it was stored in our basement for just eons (years) until finally I started going through it and clearing it out of our place. In fact, we just moved it from spot to spot, until it landed in my house, because it was just too much to deal with. hahahaha, how is that for procrastination!!!
I think that molly has missed a step a couple times and then she gets sort of stuck, because those stairs are more narrow than the ones going upstairs to bed, which she refuses to do if she is sleepy too. So, yea, might be a bit of Bettention going on too. Mainly a bit of scared about the steps, not as young as she use to be and seems to think she still is too. We already know she'll have arthritis in that one joint and it might be showing up a bit more now that she is older.
Nice to have those sunday walks in the park eh. I am sure the dogs are all loving this cool weather. Doesn't seem like we got much of a fall though. It went right from bloody hot in the summer to brrr cold winter. I kind of would like fall to stick around longer than a week. sheeezzzz It's such a nice time of the year too when you get a good one.
Glad to see you back on the forum. It's been pretty busy around here it feels like. When are you going to try to book Trixie in for her next appointment?

Hi everyone and thanks for checking in on me!! I'm still here :) ...just taking care of various things that I need to do out at my parents house. I've been driving in and out of the city more than the Sunday trips that I'm used to. It's not too far but I feel like I've been on the run and every evening when I try catching up with the board I find myself dozing on the couch.
Meanwhile Trixie still seems to be doing well, but I must get her in for her acth soon! Not too worried about her level but I'll need to get prescription renewals, so we need a test. Tomorrow I'll call and set it up for early next week. Today the poor thing was here alone for longer than she's used to but that probably bothered me more than her. This cool weather has been great for Trixie..
So...let me see how many posts I can catch up with before my eyes get heavy. ;)

Sounds like things are keeping you busy which could be a good thing right now,I hope all the sorting is going well for you. Well- tomorrow we are finally getting around to the acth test (at 2pm). As usual I am dreading bringing my little girl over to the vet, even though it's a short visit I still hate to stress her out. The thought of the stim agent circulating in her is giving me a case of the nerves tonight. I know she will probably be a little symptomatic after she gets home. ugh. :( She's been a little off with this time change, she's used to eating at an exact time so the hour change is causing a little problem...by tomorrow she should be on the new schedule.
It will be interesting to see her numbers. She is fairly well controlled, here and there I notice little things but mostly she's been pretty good...as been the case all along her evening period between 7pm-10pm is the only time she shows a little extra thirst and hunger....so we shall see when the results come in, maybe she needs a little tweak but I'm pretty sure she is not over medicated. Just want it to be tomorrow at about 3:30 so it will be over and I can pick her up!! Meanwhile she's been very happy with the cold weather..she was pretty frisky walking in the park this morning. We'll be out again early tomorrow. :D

Hi Barabra,
I am hoping for good results for Trixie, everyone at my house have fingers and paws crossed:):):):)
Years ago my daughter had to have minor surgery. I still remember the feeling I had when they took her through the doors into surgery and the doors closed in front of me. I get a similar feeling when I have to leave my pups at the vets and they take them from me.:o:o

11-07-2013, 11:50 PM
Had a major computer issue all day...finally seem to be back in business now.
I have Trixie's results. pre: 1.6 post: 2.7
Her July test was pre: 2.9 post: 4.1
Test says- post trilostane pre & post 1.5-9.1 is optimum control.
In July she still had symptoms popping out at times. These numbers are not too low are they? She never shows any signs of being too low.
It matches up to how she has been...all symptoms have been very well controlled even though she still has a big appetite.
Now for the not so good news....the liver values did not come down and they actually are a bit up from the August blood work.
ALT: Aug: 173 Nov: 215 (norm: 12-118)
Alk: Aug: 1894 Nov: 1839 (norm: 5-131)
GGTP Aug: 13 Nov: 19 (norm: 1-12)
I'm worried about this..she's doing so well I was sure these liver numbers were going to be lower...so we are back on Denamarin and he wants her on Clavamox for 30 days. Since Cushings is well controlled he thinks these should be coming down and not going up. Feeling worried about this as they had gone down in August from the test prior.
We'll see what happens, I'll start her back on the Denamarin, I had stopped it because I felt like it was so many pills all the time...but probably shouldn't have.
Now she'll have the antibiotic too.....if the numbers stay high we'll have to do another ultrasound, which was so expensive the last time. ugh.
Meanwhile Trixie seems great!! I don't want to jinx anything but her gastro stuff has been excellent...she's peppy, wants to play all the time, sleeps well, doing her long walk everyday..etc etc...so that all must mean something, right?
Also deciding whether to go with all Trilostane and get 14mg caps from Diamondback or stick with Vetoryl 10mg and Trilostane 4mg. Would be a big savings to go generic, but I don't want mess with what's working...maybe one more go around using the brand?

Hi Barbara!
I think those ACTH numbers are great, and I'm so glad Trixie is doing so well. :)
FWIW, I do want to mention that my IMS told me that the liver values may never normalize in some Cushpups, regardless of the level of cortisol control with treatment. I have seen similar quotes to that effect, and will try to rustle one up for you to consider along with your vet. I realize further liver diagnostics are a tough call in that you don't want to overlook a primary liver issue. But I also hate for you to proceed unnecessarily if significant enzyme reduction is not a realistic expectation. I'll try to get back here with some citations.
Marianne
Those are pretty good numbers but what is better is how Trixie is feeling. I wrestle with changing from brand name to generic to- I would save $150 a month on Zoe;s Veotryl nad $80 on her Azodyl.
But it is hard to swicth when things are working so I totally relate to how you you feel:)
Hopefully it is as Marianne says and some dogs liver values just dont come down. If Trixie is feeling good, maybe that is the case.
Have a great weekend! Say hi to the Plaza for me:D;)

Haven't had a chance yet to look for the info, other than to see that Dechra notes in their treatment brochure that ALKP and ALT levels may never return to normal range for Cushpups, but they *are* expected to decrease with treatment.
Can you remind us as to what Trixie's general liver enzyme history has been?
Thanks,

Hi Barbara,
Did your vet do a full blood chemistry and if so, were there any other abnormalities? I'd be most interested in bilirubin. Has Trixie ever had a bile acid test?

Well the ACTH looks real nice, but I'd be disappointed that the liver enzymes didn't come down. I do think that liver support supplements seem to need to be given ongoing once they start to have issues with cushings or liver numbers being elevated.

Thanks everyone--
Marianne- here are the liver numbers from all the tests, I am missing the very first senior panel check up from Jan. 2013 that started the whole thing. It was then that the vet prescribed denamarin and clavamox for the first time and the liver values came down...it was shortly after that when Cushing's symptoms began.
April May Aug Nov (norm)
alk 1295 2123 1894 1830 (5-131)
alt 426 220 173 215 (12-118)
ggtp 39 34 13 19 (1-12)
Glynda-
the Bilirubin on all these tests has been the same 0.1 (norm:0.1-0.3)
She has not had a bile acid test. The only other abnormals on the test are the same two, and they have been on there every time--cholesterol and triglycerides. The vet seemed not to be too concerned, I always ask about it..he chalks it up to being a schnauzer, here is what those numbers look like.
April May Aug Nov (Norm)
Choles: 330 372 342 369 (92-324)
Triglyc: 1066 578 839 877 (29-291)
Also...none of Trixie's blood work was done on a fast except the very first April test which was done when she had the ldds. The vet always did her blood work when we did the stim tests...probably not optimum I guess but it's how we did it and saved me paying for another office visit.
I don't know what I would notice, if anything, if her liver function was compromised. She has been doing so well and her gastro system has been better than ever. I think Cushings really messed up her digestion. When I think of all the times we had issues with gastro stuff...and the "plumbing noises" that we used to hear from her in the evenings...now that is a rarity and actually I haven't heard it for many months. KNOCK WOOD!! Every time I write something like that I always seem to jinx it! So I am knocking on this coffee table I'm leaning over!! :D KNOCK KNOCK! ;)
I did ask the vet about fish oil and he was kind of on the fence about it, didn't want to add anything else now so I didn't push it. He said he did feel good that her clinical signs are great and that she seems to be feeling fine, acting frisky and energetic. Lately she is always looking to play. This morning she after she ate and had her meds she went into my daughter's room and grabbed a beanie baby from off a chair and skipped by me while I was having my coffee...being a little mischief maker and tempting me to chase her and take it back...lots of this kind of behavior from her lately...at age 9! :)
Addy--I am still trying to decide what to do about going all generic or not...don't want my choice to screw things up! Will decide over the weekend I guess. When I am next by the Plaza I will say hello from you!!
Patti and Marianne....yes back on denamarin. It was I who stopped giving it to her a month or two ago...I just felt like it was pills all the time and since she was seemingly doing so well I fully expected she might not need it anymore but that was dumb I guess...we started it again last night.
Trixie had a great walk this morning, it was pretty chilly and we both loved it. I can take the cold as long as it's not too windy, must be my Scandinavian side. I'm grateful the Cushings numbers are good and I'm hoping the liver numbers will improve. Would love to see any articles you come across Marianne, and I am going to do a little searching on this issue myself.
I didn't feel the vet was being too alarmist about it...we'll see what happens now back on the denamarin, maybe the antibiotic makes a difference for her liver too?? If she stays like she is now and seems to be doing well we will wait until after the holidays and recheck her blood work...if something changes we will do it sooner. For now I am so thankful that she's doing great!! :D :D :D
Gotta think I've got some help from above..my parents were big fans of Trixie, I think they're looking out for her!!
Thanks everyone for all the input!

wow...just realized when I typed this that the alk did come down a bit from August! It's the other two that went back up...but the alk went from 1894 to 1830...still high but at least it's down a bit! I reversed them on my first post regarding the newest results. I feel a little better about that now!! :) :)

Barbara:
I know telling you not to worry won't work, cause it does not work for me either. I have to say I did not realize how high her liver numbers were. Dr. Bruyette told me once that Tipper's blood work was odd in so much as a Cush dogs normally is really out of whack on the ALT and ALK Phos. Tipper's are low in comparison to the others I have seen on here. I think partly because as soon as I got this formal diagnosis, which I really gave the vet, I put her on all her supplements for support. Some people don't believe in them and say they are a waste of money, but I have found out through using them myself this is far from true. I think all the supplements helped Tipper in that way. I think it would be a good idea to get Trixie back on them for her liver. It has helped many dogs on here. Look at all the herbs Leslie knows about and uses. So they definitely help. Blessings

Hi Barbara,
Thank you for posting test results as this helps greatly in trying to help you figure out what is going on with Trixie's liver values. There are a few inconsistencies which need clarification. Can you confirm the normal reference range for ALT for the most recent test? You show (12 - 118) on the results you listed for the four month running results, April through November, but on most recent post, with comparison between August and November, you show (15 - 66). I'm hoping the latter is incorrect because that would change the severity of elevation from moderate to mild. Also the August and November comparisons for ALK are different than the four month running results. Can you please confirm.
Has your vet formally diagnosed Trixie with hyperlipidemia? Mini Schnauzers are the number one breed that is genetically predisposed to this condition. This condition, as well as cushing's predisposes them to pancreatitis, diabetes and gall bladder mucocele. By the way, it is much more likely that hyperlipidemia is causing Trixie's digestive problems, not cushing's.
ALK has three three isoenzymes that are triggered by different things....steroids, bones and the gut. I believe Trixie's elevations are due to cushing's and her gut due to hyperlipidemia's impact on the pancreas. I am surprised by your vet's nonchalant attitude and chalking up the cholesterol and triglyceride abnormalities to Trixie's breed. Cortisol has gone down, yet Trixie's triglycerides have gone up which would indicate that that hyperlipidemia is probably not secondary to cushing's and you are dealing with primary hyperlipidema. If so, it is very important that you get her triglycerides below 500 and it is also very important that Trixie be fasted for her bloodwork. In my opinion, your vet needs to be proactive in pursuing diagnostics for a primary hyperlipidemia diagnosis and once diagnosed, he needs to get her on an effective treatment to try to bring down those triglycerides. She may be feeling great today but that can change over night. If Trixie were my dog, I'd want a consult with an internal medicine specialist.

Barbara:
I have been reading up on this condition as Tipper has had triglycerides in 600 range at times. She is now down to 394. I read a good pharmaceutical fish oil is the first thing to try. You must not over do it as the things it controls, it can also cause with too much. maybe that is why my vet told me only 3 times a week for my cat with the fish oil. If given too much it can cause fat in the blood, and make inflammation in instead of reducing these things. There is a company called Nordic Naturals which sells this for dogs. My only question is some have flaxseed and is this ok for Cushings?? I will have to check it out with Leslie. A lot of dogs that have Cushings have high Triglycerides. Blessings

Yes, many dogs with cushing's do have high triglycerides and cholesterol at diagnosis but elevations are usually mild and normalize once the cushing's is well controlled.

Tipper's were really high before when she was first diagnosed in the 600's. Now she is in the upper 300's. I kept asking my vet about doing something about it and he said his usual don't worry about it to me. This really concerns me. Do you know of a good source for the fish oil? I read no more than 300-350mg dose, is that correct Tipper weighs 18lbs. Thank you for you help. I am glad I read this. Blessings

Hi Glynda,
I corrected the values that I copied incorrectly...I was trying so hard to be accurate and still made an error or two.
I just wrote a long response in regards to the hyperlipidemia and boom my post erased when I hit something by mistake.
I won't write the whole thing now...but yes, hyperlipidemia and pancreatitis have both come up time and time again over the years. Tests and panels were done a few times after various bouts of gastro issues but she was never diagnosed with either. We went to a low fat everything diet years ago anyway to be safe.
The triglycerides were over 1000 in April when she was just beginning to have cortisol controlled. At the end of May her Cushing's numbers went back up..and she was not controlled but her Triglyceride number dropped down to 578 on that test. Then up to 838 in August and now 877.
I would love to see a specialist and when we can afford to do that we definitely will. I also will make sure the next blood work is done on first thing before Trixie eats.
I will investigate further and talk to the vet about the whole issue and getting that number lowered in the best way as soon as possible.
I appreciate your advice, so thank you!! You too Patti..thanks for the input.

I ordered the wild salmon oil for Tipper. Even though she is only in the 300's now she did have some episodes in the 600's. I kept after the vet about this and he would say don't worry about it. Good thing I never listen to him. He has steered me wrong at so many intervals along this journey it is pathetic. I am hoping to get her in the normal range so it calms down her gallbladder, and liver. The cheapest I got is was from the Only Natural Pet Store it was cheaper than Amazon. I bought the kind recommended in the link Glynda sent me, it is cold pressed and has all the nutrients still in it. I will let you know on Tipper's next blood work if it is working for her. Blessings

Me too Barbara,

Any wild weather there? It is supposed to be 40 today and then some 50's. Then next Wednesday into the teens. Tipper had a good nite last nite. She is so good at taking her shots, this dog has done every thing asked of her and more. Hope Trixie is enjoying the walks in this cool weather. I bet it took a lot of worry away that she had good numbers this time. Hope you are not working too hard at your mom's house. Blessings

Hi Letti!! :D It's nice of you to say hello. Hope you and Meeko are doing well!!
Hi Addy :p--I'm so glad Koko didn't run off when he ejected himself from his harness! That is scary. We have cold temps but nothing too extreme yet...
Hi Patti :)-- No wild weather here in NY. Chilly for sure, and I don't mind a bit. Trixie just seems to love sticking her nose up in the cold air while we briskly walk along. It has not been that cold compared to your temps in the teens. When we left this morning it was 34 degrees... The city stays quite a bit warmer than our suburbs here because of all the thermal heating...I guess that's the steam pipes under the streets combined with all the buildings and people that create heat.
The park was beautiful today and lots of dogs out off leash...Trixie loved it..sniffs around all the leaf piles and has a great time.
She's been especially playful and energetic which is great but she is bugging me to play while I'm having my coffee! You would think she would be ready for a nap after a long walk out in the cold but she seems more energized than ever! I'll take it...happy that she seems to be doing really well.

Molly does that too, gets all energetic when I'm ready to just chill out for a bit.

I am glad Trixie is having a great time in the cold weather. It makes you feel so good when you see them energized, after all they have been through. I much prefer Tipper energized than sleeping all the time. She has really had a good couple days because of the temperature. I hope for Trixie's sake you do not get the storms. I did not get to see the weather map so I don't know if it was going to hit you too. Tipper is already on high alert and feeling the effects. I pray no more thunder, as they said later this evening it will be bad. It is a shame this is happening so late in the season after she has been doing so well. I worried about her eyes. Hoping you do not get this. Blessings

Patti...we are supposed to have rain and thunderstorms at around 3-4am thru dawn. It does say scattered so I hope they scatter elsewhere and miss the city!! I'm hoping Tipper is doing okay and that you don't get it too bad by you. I saw there was terrible damage thru the midwest.
Addy....I would rather snow than rain! Crazy, right!? It's so warm though so it's thunderstorms in the forecast.
It was really mild this morning so the walk in the park was great...so many dogs out today and Trixie loves that...lots to sniff!
I was thinking we might get rained out tomorrow morning but it's supposed to clear out by 8am...so I guess we'll be headed out early as usual! :p

Hi Barbara,
Gosh, I hope those horrible storms miss you guys. We were lucky here, had thunder, lightning and heavy rain early Sunday morning, but the severe stuff stayed North of us before it moved to the East. How awful. Poor Tipper, I hope she did ok.
Glad to read that Trixie continues to do so well. I know, the elevated liver enzymes can be such a worry. From my understanding, the ALT sounds like it is more of a concern than ALP for our pups. Does your vet say that also? I remember my vet telling me that the ALP could always stay elevated in Jasper due to the Cushings, even if the cortisol was under control. Now that he has Addison's, I think it stays up due to the steroid he has to have, even though it is at a physiologic dose. But even with that, it shouldn't be as high as it has been lately. So frustrating! Jasper has hyperlipidemia also, and we treated that with Welactin fish oil way before he had Cushings. It helped significantly.
Thanks so much for your support and kind words on our thread. I have such a soft spot for schnauzers. I don't always get things posted, but I am always following your thread and keeping up with Trixie. She looks so much like my little Shelby. Jasper is solid black but he has turned more charcoal as he has gotten older. I think it is common for the black to fade in mini schnauzers, where the giant ones seem to always stay deep black. In our new avatar pic the wind was blowing about 35 mph so his ears look like the Flying Nun's hat, LOL. I was so grateful that I could get a new pic of him that I don't even care!
I hope the weather misses you and Trixie gets her walk in the park this morning.
Hugs,
Tina and Jasper

I noticed the place I got it from sent me an email that they have free shipping so I am ordering more to save on the shipping. Have you thought about what you will do to get Trixie's values down? Oh Patti...I'm sorry the cat is still not feeling well. I guess you'll be off to the vet with Lucky. I hope that it's nothing serious.
Yes..we had our usual walk this morning...perfect weather..cold but not windy. We are going to take another walk in just a little while.
Trixie still drinks more than she did before Cushings, about 16-18oz a day...which is pretty much 1 ounce for each of her 17 pounds.
She drinks about 5oz when she gets in from her walk in the morning...we are out walking about an hour so she's thirsty. Then a little more after her meal, and that's usually it until the late afternoon and evening when she seems to drink more than during the day.
After she has her 10pm pills she usually doesn't go back to the water dish. During the worst of her symptoms she would drink as soon as she hopped off the bed in the morning but thankfully she doesn't do that anymore. (knock wood)
Wish I didn't have to feel so worried about this all the time. I guess if her liver enzymes were not so high I could feel more at ease..
She doesn't seem to have any symptoms of liver disease..I guess if the numbers don't come down when we retest I'll have to get her another ultrasound. :( Hoping they DO come down though! :p

Hi Barbara, you can always pop her over at any point and say, just want to have her ALT/ALP checked. Was that the only two high? But just check the liver and not do a whole blood test. I've been known to do that with Molly just to see how the liver is doing and if we are having any affect in getting the numbers down.

Sharlene...I didn't know I could do that but I think I will as soon as we have a few more weeks of Denamarin. On the last test the 3 liver numbers were all high...the alk had come down from the August test but only a bit, the other two went up slightly. The only other numbers out of range were cholesterol and triglycerides. Everything else was normal.
I have a case of the nerves these last few days. :( Trixie is still energetic and acting fine but I am so worried about those numbers....plus she is still drinking more than she used to and that always worries me.
Like I mentioned before, after our long morning walk she usually has a big drink 5oz or so but then she doesn't really go back to the water bowl for about 3-4 hours. She drinks more in the evenings.
She comes in from outside at around 9-9:30am and doesn't need to go out again until about 5pm.
All gastro related stuff has been excellent. She has a big appetite and good energy. When I look at all that I think she's really doing great but then I have these doubts..I keep going over all of it trying to convince myself she's okay.
She's been on the medication since March but really she was not well controlled until the beginning of October, it really took awhile...so maybe the liver numbers just need a bit more time? I am hoping that is the case.
It's been bothering me all day today. She drinks about 16-18oz...so 1 ounce for each pound..is that out of line? It's just that it's more than she used to drink.

I think it took me over a year to see any sort of decrease on Molly's liver numbers and it hasn't been much, but I'll take it.
I think it takes longer for supplements to show an affect that for say a medication type of situation. So I'm trying to be patient too, but yes, liver, and lymph nodes and of course the adrenal glands are my biggest concerns too.
You can't help it some days, if you notice something a tiny big different to go into a full blown worry. It's almost the nature of the beast.
For instance, Molly ate her breakfast, All of it, then ate some dry kibble for dinner, without anything extra on it and then a couple little pieces of chicken breast later and is still acting hungry tonight. I immediately thought I need another LDDS done, but I know that that is today and that it hasn't been like that for any other day, so I'll wait and watch and see what she does in the coming days.
I just want you to know, you aren't alone, I'm right there with you. Worry, and then more worry, then other days I think, pfft, I'm imagining this because today is like this, where as yesterday was like that.
Hang in there. :) Trixie over all is doing very well.

Sharlene,
You've made me feel a lot better with your post-thank you!! Yes...each day is a little different this or that.
This evening when I took Trixie out at 5pm it was so nice outside...I felt like walking so I took her out for almost an hour. We walked along the river (I rarely do that when it's dark..the city lights and the bridge lights were so pretty) anyway..we walked farther and longer than we usually do in the evening. When she got back she drank a cup of water...so 8oz! I was freaking out when I saw the empty bowl! If it weren't for Cushings and the liver numbers I wouldn't even think about it...I would just say- well, she walked a long way and she walks fast, she's thirsty! ugh...you're so right, worry, worry, worry.
I just hope she doesn't have something wrong with her liver now that the Cushings seems better...that's my real worry now.
Then, after the water incident with Trixie my younger daughter called to say she had donated blood for a blood drive and then fainted!! I've been checking with her every half hour so so by text...looks like she's fine now..a bit tired is all.
There's always something to worry about! Wish there was just one day that could be worry-free!!! :(:(:(:(:(:(

Yes, Kathy I know you're right...I have been much more relaxed about Trixie until the last couple days or so. She does seem like she's doing great and then I think I'm trying to kid myself...with those liver numbers!?
I think her Cushing's is in good control and I feel great about that, if it weren't for the numbers! Then I'm thinking does she have liver disease?...or a growth in her liver?? I look at everything else and say how could she? She's doing so well...but then the numbers again. Back and forth. That's what I'm doing to myself. :(

Barbara:
Have you expressed this concern over Trixie's liver numbers to the vet? If so what did they say about it? I forget did you have an Ultra Sound on her organs done? You might have to think of that or asking about a liver biopsy to see if that is appropriate. It's a shame this disease does so much to their insides that you don't know what to think. It is always a guessing game unfortunately. I am praying for you both that this is easily fixable for whatever is causing these numbers to be so high. Blessings

Yes Patti, the vet is aware and also concerned about the liver numbers. We are going to go a few more weeks on Denamarin and Clavamox(which he prescribed in case of liver infection) and do another blood test...fasted this time so we can look at the triglycerides too.
We did an ultrasound back in the spring...somewhere back in my posts I listed the results. Nothing at that time was cause for concern. So...if the numbers have not come down at the end of December then we'll need another ultrasound. That's the order of things for now. She has no clinical signs of liver trouble right now.
Today it was raining so we did a 15-20 minute walk this morning. Now I can see she drinks a lot less when we don't take a long walk. Only a couple ounces so far today and when we do our 1-2 miles she drinks closer to 5-6 oz. in the morning and then more later on. That makes me feel a little better. I suppose her water intake is really not that out of whack...much of it seems to triggered by exercise and hopefully not because of a liver issue. Still watching everything though.

Barbara:
I am glad you have a plan for Trixie as those liver numbers are a concern so I understand that. I am in the middle of getting a nutritionist for Tipper. She needs this weight off that she gained when uncontrolled, she needs a diet that makes her not hungry, and she needs low fat and low salt and moderate protein. So I am no nutritionist, but understand for her to stay at her current level of health I must do something. I understand the importance of it. There really is nothing more important than what goes into your body, I just need the right combination and supplements put down on paper from someone highly experienced. I can barely afford this especially with what Tipper has coming up the ultra sound and blood work and cardiologist, but I have to do it or I will feel I have not done everything I can to help her fight this disease. I have learned to cut my budget for myself in order to help her so it is a must do for me. Tipper is walking in between the rain. It is a light rain, but the snow is coming. It should be pretty though. Glad Trixie had a good walk and is not drinking so much water. When Tipper goes to the bowl it is like fingernails on a chalk board to me. It is funny how upsetting it is when they drink too much. It really gets my nerves going. Blessings
Patti
Hi Barbara,
I think we always are waiting for the other shoe to drop.:( Then when we figure out a plan, even a short range plan, we relax a little. we know we are supposed to take it one day at a time, but we all find that so hard to do:o
Your walk sounds lovely and I am so glad you were able to enjoy that with Trixie. I have always loved NYC at night, the lights are so beautiful. I always called the Chrysler Building the "pineapple" building as that was what it reminded me of the first time I saw it at night. hubby's family still teases me about that:o
Hope you have a good weekend and try not to worry and if you cant help yourself, you can come worry with me:):)

Popping in to see if the See's candy 20kg you ordered for me has arrived yet??? A true friend is the one with all the chocolate so thank you for being there for me Barbara :):)
I have not found out much about the liver numbers/cholesterol thing yet, but I do intend to ask when I get to speak to IMS when results come in. I wonder if it is all connected to lipomas too I keep finding new ones on Flynn all the time, losing count!
I am keen on ultrasounds too, without having them regularly I hate to think where we would be with Flynn. He has them 6 monthly, but that was also as followup from his previous surgery, but his recently increased ALP/ALT sure rushed us into getting it done a little earlier.
She sure sounds like she is enjoying life at the moment, so it would be good if this was just cushings related but I am sure you would extra peace of mind with the scan xxxxx
Hi Barbara.. if it's not one thing it's another eh? Sometimes Keesh's numbers are all over the map.
I sure hope you can get to the bottom of this and have some relief. We all need a break from the constant worry our pets give us.

I bet you and Trixie are going to have a good weekend as I saw snow in your forecast also. Tipper likes to stick he face in it, but no more ears rubbing in it. Last time she got an ear infection from the snow melting in her ear canal. Have a good weekend. Blessings

They say we are going to get some snow flurries here today. Glad we aren't on the other side of the lake as Buffalo down by Lake Erie side looks like they are going to get it.
It was a pretty brisk wind and cold out on our morning walk today. Molly's ears were blowing back against her head and she looked like she was loving it, as her nose was stuck up in the air right into it. hahaha. I had my down parka on and was turning the other way. I bet though that it would have been a lovely morning in the park today. Brisk with sun shining here.

Oh Barabra, snow in Central Park would be divine, no?
I can just picture it.:D:D:D:D

Finally back on the board tonight..and such nice posts from everyone, thank you all!! Freezing here and I don't mind if it snows as long as it waits for my younger girl to get home from school on Tuesday. It's supposed to start here as rain Tues. and change to snow showers on Wednesday.
I was out at my mother's house all weekend. Still chipping away at the massive amount of stuff. Made a lot of progress and got 25 bags of clothes and shoes picked up for donation. Yes...25 bags!
I just hung two pretty floral watercolors in my daughter's room, they look so pretty. My mother painted them and had them framed, she signed and dated them-1968. They were hanging in her dressing room for the last 30 years, where I was clearing things out yesterday. I think she would like how nice they look here now.
Anyway, so I am catching up on all the posts. My daughter is coming home with a girlfriend who is staying over here tonight. Trixie hates company so I am bracing myself for the barking which is about to happen when they walk in!!
Meanwhile Trixie is doing great these last few days :)...oh my, I hope I am not jinxing it!!!
I won't say anymore..she just seems good, plus she loves this cold weather.
OH MY GOODNESS. The girls just walked in and Trixie just blew a gasket...barking her head off at 11:15pm. Very bad and mean barking...she is so territorial..outside she isn't bothered by a thing, but anyone other than family walks through the front door and watch out!
Good thing the walls of this old building are thick..and it doesn't hurt that my neighbors dog barks all the time. Trixie is still huffing and puffing...and of course now we have some panting but at least I know why! I am going to remove her from the living room and drag her into my bedroom..she is the worst hostess in town!!:eek::eek:

Trixie is just like Tipper she does not want strangers in the house and really gets nasty and fusses. Tipper is still loving the cold also. I am glad that winter is here for the sake of these Cush babies. When you get Trixie clipped does she still like the cold with no coat on? The people there probably look at her and think bad mother that dog is freezing!! Some dogs like it that way. Hope you have a good visit with your daughter. Blessings
Patti
25 bags of clothes and I thought we had a bunch.:):) We downsized mom from her condo which took months and then her assisted living apt. You cant walk in my basement or my brothers;)
Who knows when I will be ready to let any of what is left go:o:o
Happy Monday, we had snow!!!

Molly doesn't like people she doesn't know in her house either. She gets real barky about it. We have finally told people, do not make eye contact with her, don't talk to her, don't touch her and she will eventually stop. As long as they do that, then things do calm down. If they don't, then it's a rather noisy place.
The pictures sound lovely. When my Mother In Law shipped all her mothers stuff to our house and we started going through it (it took years for me to get rid of some of it and some I still have), I found some pictures from my mother in laws grandmothers place, with broken glass on the frames and so dirty you couldn't even see the pictures inside. They were in the pile for the garbage. I don't know what made me take a second look at them, but I did and then I took them to a frame shop, and had them removed and they were lovely pictures, probably from early 1900s or late 1800's, European. So I had them all matted and re-framed. (there were 3) then I hung them in the room that we did just for my mother in law and when she came to visit the next time, she was wowed over. She said she hadn't seen those since she was a girl and where did we find them. :) It was great. I bet your daughter will Love the pictures too.
Now if I could just figure out what to do with 2 sets of china. *sigh* and a host of other stuff. LOL

Patti...so funny you mentioned the coat business, because someone just this morning asked me where my dog's coat was??? Haha...I explained she doesn't like apparel (or people who bud in to her business haha) anyway this lady should only know what I do for this dog!!
If she's been clipped and has short fur I will try and get a sweater on her when it is very cold...coats move around a bit and that stops her in her tracks...sometimes she will forget the sweater is on so it works out. If it's cold and wet...snow, rain, sleet I put a waterproof coat but she is never happy about it and sometimes I'll have to pull it off if she stops walking.
Addy...we had so much stuff because it was also my father's things...we never went through his things after he died...too busy taking care of my mother. They had more clothes than I realized also seemed to have not thrown anything much away from the last 30 years or so...depression era people..saving things just in case. It's so hard to deal with all the things from the house. It's sad and everything you pick up can get you feeling sentimental. I try and just do things super quickly so I don't let myself think too much about a pair of shoes or whatever it is. I'm keeping things that are meaningful to me but I can't keep everything...it's terrible, very hard to do. I want it to be over but I'm still not near finished yet and my brother is not very productive and helpful in the process. He points out things that we need to do all the time..as if I can't figure it out myself. How about he just starts doing it and stops talking about it, that would help!
Sharlene...If I had a basement I would probably be keeping even more stuff so I'm kinda glad I don't have too much extra storage space, or I would be loaded with stuff, stuff and more stuff.
Those paintings sound really neat though. Nothing like wiping away all the age and dirt and discovering beautiful artwork--diamonds in the rough.
As for china..we also have a lot..my grandmother had two sets..I have one of those, plus my own newer stuff and there's another two sets at my mothers house, don't know what to do about that yet. I have 2 girls so it's not like I don't want to save it but I have no idea where I will put it all!!
Trixie's sleeping peacefully as our house guest has left the building..:D She is a terror!! With some people, after they are here for awhile and if they sit nicely, Trixie will give them a break and stop trying to intimidate them...however not my daughter's friend. Trixie was relentless and a big pain.
The wind is howling outside  and Trixie has just gone into hiding in the bathroom. I think the weather over the next few days is going to be wild and crazy!

Hi Barbara,
I'm glad to hear that Trixie continues to do well. At least well enough to intimidate your guests.;)
It probably does look strange to other walkers when you're out walking Trixie without a coat. They probably think you were freezing her to death! Buddy and now Rosie wear light sweaters to go to bed at night. This is definitely a wuss household with no real weather.
You sure have been busy with your mom's house. What a huge amount of work! I bet you're glad to get it done. Make sure you take a break for turkey day. Xxxxx

That is too funny about what Trixie does to the guests, but reminds me exactly of Tipper, no one dare even make a hand gesture when in her presence as she perceives that as a threat. Are you cooking for the holiday? That is probably a lot for you as you have been working so hard at your mom's house. You'll have to put a sign on Trixie saying " No I don't like coats thank you." The wind is howling and the rain is pounding out there. Trixie was good and actually went out in it for her last pee/poop for the night...my husband is on for the late walk. Luckily there is a scaffolding up down the street which provided enough shelter from the rain that she would do her business!! So glad she ventured out, sometimes in this weather she won't go past the front door. She came back all wet and needed quite a toweling off!
I am cooking Patti...but just for us. I am used to years of having the whole family...aunts, uncles, cousins, inlaws etc.. so this is not a big deal for me. My younger daughter and I will cook and bake tomorrow so that most of the meal will be ready to go Thursday. I don't feel stressed about it as it's just us.
I don't think the balloons will fly in the parade as this wind is supposed to increase and not decrease.
Trixie's in hiding with the wind noises and rain hitting the window..she's doesn't seem too distressed though..no shaking. :)
Kathy..Rosie sleeps in a sweater?? That must look cute..Trixie would not be happy in "pjs". ;)

Belated Thanksgiving wishes to everyone. Haven't been on the board for a number of days. Having everyone at home kept me busy this last week. :D
Trixie seems to be doing fine. No changes lately...still drinking a bit more than what used to be her normal but I guess that "normal" is long gone, and now she has a new normal. She's good...doing her walk everyday and then some. Just bought her a cuddler style bed for the living room. Turns out it's not so great...a bit flimsy and I'm online about to buy another...that's what I get for cheaping out at Pet Smart...it was a Martha Stewart bed so figured it would be nice but it practically falls over when she gets in it!
Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Time flies by so quickly this time of year!

Oh I shop at Zuilily too Patti. They have some great deals. I ordered a cat puzzle for my stepdaughters cats and a gate that will fit the entry to the living room for when we have workers around and Molly goes into bat crazy mode. Baby gates with books on the end just wasn't cutting it and I couldn't find anything to fit. Hoping this work, when it arrives.

Hi Barbara
Nice to read all is well in New York! So nice to have your family around for the holiday. :) Time sure is flying by, be Christmas before we know it, but that means more time off work so looking forward to that! Hope you find a nice bed for the Princess Trixie, Flynny's has had his bed for years now. I keep looking at new ones but he likes it I think and knows all the comfy spots to rest up!! He has a few nice blankies in it and when he gets in he digs them up into a nest of his liking!! Funny things aren't they :D:D xx

It was wonderful and so heartwarming to get the email that Karma has had her surgery. I am so glad you joined me in becoming a part of her plight for help. It makes me feel good to know I can do a little and make a difference. I don't have the means I once did, but I do what I can. I am glad Trixie is doing so well on this dose. Just checking in and saying hello. Freezing cold here after a brief bit of snow yesterday. I made Trixie put on her warmest waterproof coat while the snow was falling in the morning, but once outside I had to remove it! Trixie was on strike...wouldn't even put her nose to the ground while the coat was on, just stood there looking at me, as if to say-if you want me to do my business you better remove this coat!!. The minute it was off she shook herself out and got busy sniffing around. She's a stubborn one.
Today it was pretty chilly when we went for our walk but I didn't bother to put her sweater on...she seems to love the cold air, bouncing around, sniffing the wind and having a great time outside. Luckily I had on layers because we were out an hour...longer than I expected!
Trixie's water intake has gone down a little more. yay! Most days she is under 2 cups!! Of course it depends on how much she has been outside but all in all a big improvement!
Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season...pups included of course!! ;)

Great News on Trixie. That is too funny about the coat. Hope you have all your Christmas stuff done. Did you see Karma's picture after she had her eye removed? She is too cute and not too far from where I live I may contact them about seeing if I can adopt her. I have 2 males and they would enjoy a female to boss them around. I do not need another cat to care for though. I just want her to have a good home. Tipper is miffed again today because it is too cold for her with a heart condition to walk. It is 15 here and going to 12 tonite. It is snowing and I will have to watch the road conditions as Tipper goes to laser therapy tomorrow and I may have to cancel. I hate to as I know her back is bothering her. Blessings

Well, it make sense that if she is out for a good long bit, then she'd drink more water. So, okay, that's cool, we can deal with that. hahahahaha
freakin cold here today too. Suppose to be a snow storm this weekend. I'll miss it though as we're heading out to British Columbia for the weekend . Unless of course we get a snow storm were we are going too. hmmmm.. yea, we won't think about that. LOL

Hi Barbara
I hope you are enjoying the Christmas season too. I spent Christmas in New York in 1988 (gosh I am that old!), it was so fabulous... well apart from nearly being in that Pan Am plane crash over Lockerbie. I was on the exact same flight but 24hrs after the one that was bombed, I had tried to get a ticket the day later but they were all sold out. Crikey, I will never forget that day :(. My family got quite a fright, as they knew I was flying London to NY for Christmas but were not exactly sure which day. Terrible, but it goes to show my ability to be a disaster magnet on my trips started many, many years ago... so I would advise any of you if I do ever come and visit to batten down the hatches! But anyway, I got to NY safe and sound and had the most magical Christmas there, I will never forget how beautiful your city is was with all the decorations and lights.
I am so pleased to hear that Trixie is doing well, she has a big natural fur coat and it sounds like that does her just fine :D Hope you are doing ok, are you still doing the sorting at your Mom's, sounds like a massive job with all your parents had collected over the years. Lots of memories, happy and sad at the same time. Hugs for you xxxxxxx

It fell to me to clean out both the home my mother grew up in down in Mississippi when her last sister passed as well as the home I grew up with Mama. It was mind-blowing some of the things I found both places. I learned a great deal about my mother that I would have never known, about my dad, their life together, her family history and so much more. In the house in Mississippi, I found a bill of sale for a young boy my great grandfather bought as a slave for $2.50. Purchasing a human being is despicable and I was horrified - until I talked to one of my remaining uncles who told me that my great granddad bought many slaves, brought them home, freed them and gave them his family name - Crockett. If they chose to stay and work on the farm, they were given houses, a plot of land, and whatever they needed to get set up. There were houses scattered all over the land my mom's family owned where these freed slaves and their families lived for generations - and some still live on the land given them by my great grandfather. So there are Crocketts out there who are both black and white, proudly carrying on the family name.

Patti-I did see Karma's photo! I'm so happy she was able to have the operation. It would be so nice if you could adopt her..I know her finder/angel said she wasn't sure if she could keep her or not. I guess she's a student and it's not easy taking care of pets when you are in school. I hope Karma ends up in a loving home--if it's yours I know she'll be a lucky cat indeed!
Sharlene- Yes...I hope the time spent outside in the cold dry air is what increases Trixie's water drinking. I am still measuring every day.
Trixie got me so mad this morning. We were on our way home from an abbreviated walk, it was 24 degrees but so windy..biting cold. I stopped at the corner news stand to buy a lottery ticket...wasn't sure if I was going to go back out so I stopped. I took out my money and a huge gust blew and my $5 bill fell and blew to my side. Just a few quick steps and I could have stomped my foot down to hold it...except for Trixie decided she didn't want to budge from where she was standing!! GRRRR! I pulled her a bit but I didn't want to hurt her neck and in that split second another gust and there went my money!! Other people tried to stop it but the wind just took it away across the street! Well I hope someone who needs a cup of coffee and a snack finds it!! Trixie is the most stubborn dog ever!!
Trish- Wow, that is amazing! I remember the story of the PanAm flight so well. In fact many on the flight were students from Syracuse University coming back from a semester abroad. My daughter ended up in school there...years later of course. They still hold a memorial service every year for the students who were lost as well as honoring a group of students with scholarships in their names. I can only imagine how scary it was for your family!
It is so pretty here at Christmas..I won't argue with that. Last weekend we saw the Vienna Boys Christmas concert at Carnegie Hall and when we came out of the performance the snow was falling and all the decorations were sparkling...it was so lovely. We are going back next week for the NYPops concert of Christmas songs and then we'll check out all the windows. I haven't had time yet as I'm working out at my parents house. We're expecting a few inches of snow tomorrow so I'm looking forward t staying in, doing the tree and maybe even baking some cookies. We'll see what I am really able to accomplish as it's tempting to sit on the couch with a good movie on while the snow is falling!! ;)
Leslie- Your story is so interesting!! You really went back in time with the things you discovered at your old home. I have not found anything quite that interesting but I have read through many letters written by my mother's family-mother, sisters, aunts and cousins. My mother was from Hawaii and the only one of her family to ever leave and live somewhere else. They wrote many letters to one another with very detailed stories of current events, family activities etc and it was so much fun reading them and I did save a bunch, many were from over 40-50 years ago so a bit of history there, sort of.
Other than that, the clean-out is emotionally hard. We had to call the "junk-luggers" to take away things from the attic and garage...it's hard seeing lives disassembled and I have to keep telling myself that even though these are my parents belongings it's not "them". I find it extremely hard. I am keeping as much as I can but of course I cannot keep all there is. It doesn't help that it's the holiday season when it's easy to get melancholy about family and friends.
Good thing I have this crazy little dog that keeps us all laughing with her quirky behavior!! :D
I am off to pick up a Christmas tree before tomorrow's snowstorm. I'm counting on my two girls to lend a hand getting it all decorated, I'm tired just thinking about getting those dang lights on it.
Wishing everyone a nice weekend...stay cozy inside if you can!! :)

Hi Barbara:
I saw New York this morning on the news and know you got a good dose of snow too. Does Trixie like the snow? Yesterday all Tipper wanted to do was rub her head in the snow. I don't know why they like to do that. She got an ear infection the last time she did it, so I try to stop her, sometimes she is too quick. Well we may be going to the vets tomorrow if this diarrhea does not stop. It was not as bad last nite and I checked to make sure she was hydrated enough. Hope you and Trixie enjoy your Sunday, it looked beautiful in New York with the snow and lites and all. How lucky are you to have Christmas in New York. I bet all the things to see including the stores are beautiful. Trixie seems to be doing really well lately. I had to stop Tipper's Vetoryl while she ahs the runs so I am worried about the damage it does toe her. I will also have to post pne her next ACTH due to this. Blessings

Stopping in to say hello and wish you Happy Christmas Tree Hunting.
It seems so romantic, hunting for a tree in the city while snow is falling. I rather picture some type of movie set more so than reality I suppose;)

I have to admit...the city is beautiful at Christmas and especially in the snow. It's snowing right now and my younger daughter and I are about to finish getting the ornaments on the tree.
Addy--Getting a Christmas tree here in the city is just like you see in the movies. They are on every corner selling them, but guess what? They are so expensive that even though I like just going to the sidewalk and buying a tree we didn't! Crossed the 59th St. bridge and bought one at Home Depot!! Spent about a 1/4 of the price that way, and now that it's here with the lights on it looks beautiful!! Maybe I'll be able to get a photo with Trixie in front of it when I'm done decorating.
Patti-Trixie loves the snow!! Today it was only 25 degrees when we went out, the snow was coming down...and Trixie did not have on her coat because with it on she just stood there and wouldn't move. We were out for 45 minutes!! Our doorman could not believe we stayed out so long, but she was loving every minute of it as were all the dogs in the park. Trixie does seem to be doing well...some days seem so normal, and other days not so much but all in all I'm thankful she seems regulated.
Here is the cutest Christmas video I wanted to share...you Jack Russell owners will especially like it....it's been around so maybe some have seen it, but it's SO cute I have to put the link up.

You were the smart one going to Home Depot. I bet the city is as beautiful as you described it. How about that Trixie no coat on and out that long. She is a tuff one. I am glad she likes the snow, Tipper just wants to get down with her butt in the air and rub her ears and get an ear infection! Had enough of that, so I really have to watch as she is smart and tries to take advantage of you not paying attention then she dives and goes for it. Blessings

Are you singing? Winter Wonderland, White Christmas, Oh Christmas Tree. ... LOL
Nothing like a white christmas in the city. It's just magical. *sigh*
We've got plenty of white here too. Then a warm up at the end of week. I don't think it'll be enough to melt all the snow though ,and then another storm coming in "maybe" for the weekend. I'm quoting the weatherman as we're still at maybe for the weekend, but it's looking "highly likely" I have to love the way they cover all their bases with a few chosen phrases. LOL
Looking forward to that tree picture with Trixie!

NYC is gorgeous during the holidays! One of my first dates with Chris was walking through the city, seeing the tree, Rockefeller center, Macy's windows etc. They go all out and it is magical.

Such cute pictures of Trixie, she is beautiful and I can see why you love her so, she is quite the character. You sort of know she wants to rip of the collar but is trying to humor you! Your tree looks beautiful. Hope you get a tiny bit of snow for Christmas as some won't get any I heard. Blessings

Hi Barbara:
Hope you at least get a dusting of snow for Christmas. The city will have to truck some in from somewhere else other wise. I guess you have all your baking done? Will your daughter stay for Christmas? Hope you and Trixie have a wonderful holiday together. Blessings

Patti- Yes, both daughters here for Christmas. One lives here after recently graduating from college. She's working at an advertising agency here in the city, my younger daughter is in college and she's home for winter break.
Maybe we'll get a dusting of snow tomorrow evening. It's started to get colder tonight.
We'll be baking tomorrow. My husband will be home early and he'll give Trixie a good walk while I get busy in the kitchen.

Hoping you had a wonderful time with all your family home. Hope no one got Trixie any coats for Christmas!! Did Trixie manage to sneak any Christmas goodies/ Tipper never even got so much as a taste. I am too afraid of her getting sick from anything. We are to have 40's this weekend so if Tipper's leg holds out she can walk some. Blessings

Meerrrrrryyyyyy Christmas!!! Hope you had a lovely Christmas eve and day!
How is Trixie liking her new sweater? Cold enough to convince her to wear it yet?
Molly, may not think her new coat is the greatest gift in the world, but she definitely was doing a Diva turn in it out today with her friend Maggie, the westie (who was in her bright red coat, Maggie LOVES her coats and clothes)
Snow yet? We have tons, ice and snow. You can have some of ours

Happy New Year to everyone!! Sorry to have not been on the board the last few days...I will have to catch up on posts.
Haha Sharlene...Trixie HATES the new sweater!! It's too big and so hung over her little docked tail when I put it on for today's walk. She was completely neurotic. Once it was on she kind of sank down towards the floor and then lifted up her back right leg...just hung it up there and stood on three legs. ???? Just plain weird...I left it on and in the elevator she kept going in circles. Wasn't worth it...I took it off and she shook out with relief.
She will most definitely be needed something on Thursday and Friday as it looks like we have a blizzard and really cold temps expected so I'll dig out her old coat. What a nutty dog.
Patti- No Christmas food treats for Trixie either...I am always cautious with food. She did get a small treat of raw lean chopped meat the other day though. It's freshly ground at my market and I have given it to her before...she loves it!
Hope everyone and all the pups have a happy healthy 2014!!

Hi Barbara:
I am so glad you enjoyed your holidays. I can't help but laugh over Trixie and her outerwear ban. I saw where you are going to get blasted with snow and wind like we are, so Trixie with her new hair cut may decide to stay in during this. If not she is one tough little cookie. Blessings

Another cold, cold day but the thaw is coming, along with rain though:(.
We'll be all the way up to 29 degrees tomorrow which will probably feel warm...it's all relative! :D Such a dilemma with Trixie and wearing something warm during the polar weather. She refuses to put her nose to the ground if she's wearing a coat or sweater. When it was below zero the other night I had to put her coat on, but once outside she just started walking fast...no sniffing..just walking. After almost 10 minutes...way too long to be out in that cold, I just took off her coat and in about 3 minutes she did everything she needed to do! Now I just bring a sweater in my hand...but only so people don't judge me as a bad dog owner when we're out! I have explained so many times that she won't "go" while wearing apparel! Here I am all bundled up, scarf all the way up to my eyes and my dog is naked!!
It is a year ago that I first began to notice some little things which were the beginnings of Cushings-though I didn't know it at that point. I remember driving home from my mother's on New Years Day last year and Trixie was panting in the car. I remember we thought it was strange as it was cold out, but we chalked it up to sometimes being carsick. She's on medication for about 10 months now and seems well controlled after all those months of tweaking. She still has a major appetite but I guess she's kind of always been that way with food. I do think she needs to take off a few pounds so I am starting to cut back a bit on portion size. She's about 5 pounds heavier than she was before Cushings. Not getting any good exercise during this freezing weather. I'm hoping we can get a good walk in tomorrow if we can get into the 20s-30's by morning.
We're probably off to the vet tomorrow to check out an itchy ear--not sure if it's anything really. Also have to schedule blood work for the end of the month...hoping so much for lower liver and triglyceride numbers.
Hope everyone is staying warm if it's crazy cold where you are!

Glad to hear that Trixie continues to do so well. Itchy ears are often caused by allergies. Do you know if Trixie has any? I'll it's a good idea to get it checked as an infection could be brewing. Let us know what the vet says. xxxxx

So sorry to hear that Trixie's ear is still bothering her. :( Molly isn't thrilled with the jacket situation either, but for now she has one that she tolerates reasonably well, so I'm using that. Its the new one from Christmas. Our biggest problem currently is her feet. This cold is hard on their feet and she refuses booties. Might have to work on that and see what we can manage.
Molly doesn't even need to see either the cleaner or medication bottles, she anticipates if she hears the sound or me shaking the medicine and takes off.
Let us know what the vet says.

Wow a year on and look how well she is doing!! Your story will be giving lots of hope to new people who appear here so worried about their pups Barbara. Hope the ear problem settles and the vet can give you something to settle it down. That ear plucking sounds painful, why do they have to do that is her fur too long in there? Ouchies! Might be better just to leave the fur in place! xxx

Hi Barbara:
I bet you are still frigid up there this morning. It is supposed to go away by Saturday. I think maybe Tipper could walk a short distance to get her leg going again. We finally got a nice long walk in this morning. Trixie was raring to go, and so happy to get outside for more than a few minutes. All of 22 degrees this morning but somehow after the polar vortex it feels like Miami Beach here today!
Anyway- no head shaking or scratching at all today. If she goes the whole day and evening without being bothered by the ear then perhaps it's all settled down. I can always take her tomorrow if it seems to flare up again. Hate to end up spending upwards of $100 just to walk into the vet, so I'm going to watch her. I wonder if it had anything to do with being out in the severe cold?
Kathy-she has never had any allergies as far as I know. No bad itching problems-skin, eyes, ears, over her almost 10 years.
Trish- I don't know what goes on with the fur being plucked from the ears, it's just always what they do...is it just schnauzers? I don't know, I guess if the ear fur gets overgrown it can cause problems? She always comes from the groomer with itchy ears and extra head shaking, but it's usually gone in a day or so. We'll see...I'm going to keep my eye on her--as I always do!

we're back. Ear infection, most likely from when she had the grooming and the plucking of the fur, or water that got in there. No more of that plucking. The vet said for some dogs it's a good thing, keeps moisture level low etc...for Trixie it's not so good and I'll be telling the groomer to leave her ears alone from now on. So now we have ear wash and drops. They did a deep ear cleaning and put the drops in for today...can't believe they charge for the ear cleaning, you would think it would be factored into the appt. since that's what I'm there for. They also said her heartworm test was due...so while they were taking blood they are going to run the liver numbers too...guess I'll at least save the appt fee for that. I'm just so nervous for the results, just want the liver numbers down. Anyway walked out of there with a bill for $450. Appt. fee, heartworm test, blood test, med, wash, ear cleaning. Unbelievable. We love Trixie though,...just hate the bills.

01-09-2014, 05:44 PM
Yep, I know. Hate the bills, love the little furry sweethearts. So, whatcha going to do. :)
What kind of med did they give you? I'm sing Surolan which should be safe from what they told me. I don't want any damage or hearing loss. Molly already acts like she Can't hear me when I know she can. (just like someone talk outside and she is all over that window)!
Molly's ear Seems to be doing better . I'll just keep an eye on it.

Sharlene- I have Mometatax for her ear...I actually already had it for when she had the external yeast infection last Fall.
I asked about using this particular med and deafness...vet said any of the ear meds for bacterial infection "could" cause deafness....all medications have risks..etc etc...I NEVER like that answer.
I'm very concerned about using it and I know this exact med was discussed on this board. I'm looking online...a number of deafness stories...I am going to call tomorrow and see if there is something else. I am not at all comfortable about using it, even though it seems that it's an ear drum tear combined with using this med that causes possible deafness.
I'm looking and reading online and almost all the ear meds seem to have posts regarding deafness stories though Mometatax has more than the others.
She put one dosage in today, I am calling tomorrow and see about an alternative.
Now I have that awful worried feeling.....

I'm just reading online about Zymox Otic. Has great reviews on lots of sites, very positive posts including a vet blog. It's an otc enzyme solution. Anyone ever hear of it or try it? Trixie has never had an ear infection before so I've no experience with any of the treatments for it, but now very nervous about the whole thing. I don't know what I should do, but I do have to treat it.
Sharlene-Surolan has polymyxin as an ingredient...is that not a "mycin" as well?

I'm not sure, but I spoke with the internist about my concerns and she said they hadn't had any problems with it and that they were aware of the problems with some mycin medicines in the ear. As long as you don't use it when the drum is ruptured. If you do, then you can have problems.
I've read about zymox too. Maybe some of the others know something about it.

I really like the Zymox Otic and has always worked really well for me and my clients pups. I believe Glynda also mentioned another great ear med or cleaner .. some kind of blue stuff. Give her a pm and ask.
We also recently just found an over the counter zymox, I am sure it's not as strong, but no Rx needed. I purchased a bottle to keep in the doggy medicine cabinet.

Hi Barbara,
John mentioned an ear clearer that was recommended by Glynda. I use it for Rosie. She arrived with fleas, ticks and ear mites. The ear mites were treated, which left an infection. Anyway, all of it had to be cleaned out under anesthesia. That is when they spayed her too and realized she had allergies. She had a bubble of fluid in her ear. A few days of benedryl got rid if the bubble and finally cleared her ears. This was back when she was four months old. Glynda recommended an ear cleaner which I have been using since then, over four months now. A couple if drops per week is all that us needed to keep her ears dried out and infection free. It works like a charm. Rosie fights the drops. I can not approach her with a bottle, so I saturate a cotton ball and wipe out her ears with it, while squeezing a few drops into each ear canal. The name if the cleaner is Liquid Health K9 Ear Solutions Ear CleanerIt comes in a twelve ounce bottle and will last a long time. It is bright purple in color. It cost about $11. I purchased it from Amazon. You do not need a prescription.

Hi Barbara:
My vet is old fashioned and still uses Panalog. I have never looked anything up on it, but I will now that you brought this up. I know everyone said do not use anything with micin at the end of it. I am hoping you get this cleared up soon. I think it could have something to do with them cleaning her ears at the groomers too. Either that or maybe someone was not careful and got some water in her ear during her bath. No fun having an ear ache especially for a dog. I just looked up Panalog and it is a steroid that needs used sparingly so I too will be getting the ear drops suggested by Glynda. Blessings

Thanks John, Kathy, Patti....I am not going to be using Mometamax...just too uncomfortable reading countless stories about dogs going deaf, and many according to their owners were checked for perforated ear drums and didn't have prior to using. Even if this is just a miniscule percentage of the people who have used the product it's still a chance and I won't take it.
Ever since this whole Cushing's chapter I have a different mentality about the vet. I am not bowled over by mine...it's been fine, okay, and the Cushings treatment is going well, but I never get "that certain feeling" like I have the best vet ever. I would like to feel that, especially in light of all the money it costs. Yesterday I did not see my usual guy, but one who I have seen before. She is very nice and warm to Trixie but when I questioned the deafness issue with this med I don't like the response I received. I will question things now, I won't just "do it" if it goes against my gut feeling. Also the vet I do see got a glimpse of us in the hallway but he didn't come out and ask how Trixie is...and why were we there!! That really bothers me! He was in the coffee room...he could have just called out to us to see what was doing, maybe wish a Happy New Year. These are the things that bother me...where's the courtesy and consideration..we are regulars, why no recognition? I don't think that's asking so much is it? How are you not interested in your patient!? I would be if I were a vet/doctor. Only one vet there is like that. I used to see her exclusively but once we were diagnosed I got the senior guy who knew Cushings best. If Trixie stays regulated for a few more months and those liver numbers come down, I may consider moving if I can find someone who is excellent and shows us consideration. Guess I'm asking for the moon!
Meanwhile she did get one dosage of the Mometamax yesterday and a good deep cleaning (charged for that too)-they did give (SELL) me what appears to be a good cleaning solution. So far today she does not seem bothered by her ear at all, no head shaking or scratching. I just did a cleaning and cotton came out fairly clean...yesterday was gunky. I ordered a bottle of Zymox Otic from Lambert along with our Cushings meds so it should be here in a couple days.
You can only use it and it alone as both cleaner and enzyme medication for the bacteria/yeast. It comes hydrocortisone free too so that's what I got...no need adding any cortisone for us. It is highly recommended and now that John likes it too I like it even better.
That's where we are. Of course this all kept me up last night...doesn't take much to start the worry machine going. :(
I do believe she got this from the grooming....as if that doesn't cost enough I had to add this all to it!!

I know what you mean. Doesn't it all just drive you crazy sometimes? :( It does me. They should know you after all this time and it wouldn't hurt to say hello. sheezzz
I'm lucky in that my vet is the owner of the practice and no other vet there, but then again, I worry about her being as up as she should be on issues (the cushing diagnosis and starting her on 30mg of vetroyl right away) and not relying so much on "drug and company reps" .
I think I'm going to order the Zymox Otic too. Better to have it on hand.

Bleeding heck that's expensive, your poor wallet! I agree with you a little "Hi, how's things going" would not have hurt. Especially when you are paying fee's like that. Sometimes I have come across medical people that do not have the best bedside manner but people put if with it if they are providing excellent care, but you do not have too if there are other options that make you feel more comfortable. Fingers crossed especially for the liver tests as I know you are worried about those Barbara. Pleased to hear Trixie's ear has improved with the treatment ! xx

Barbara:
Please go onto 1-800 Petmeds before giving Trixie the ear meds you have and see what some people said after using them. Could you try Zymox, it seemed to have good reviews and could not find anything bad about it. I also read and did not know this that it is imperative for a vet to make sure the dogs eardrum is intact before treating any ear infection, and that they should have a culture done to identify the exact bacteria so it can be treated properly. All antibiotics in the aminoglycicyde class can cause deafness especially Gentomycin. There were 2 herbs I found that are used for ears that are antimicrobial Verbascum Thapsus and Mohonia or Oregon Grape Root. Marshmallow root is good for staph, and Pseudomonas. I better get me something in the house as Tipper has had ear infections thru the years and this scares the crap out of me that they can go deaf.

Hi Barbara:
Just thinking of you and Trixie as the winter weather is to come back on Monday. It was in the 40's here yesterday so I gave Tipper a bath. She has been scratching her one ear for a few days so I ordered Zymox for her in the event we need it too. I walked her yesterday for the first time since she hurt her leg and she did ok. I kept her on once I bathed her. I am not wanting to take a dirty dog to the hospital next week and Tipper is used to always being clean. just with that polar vortex I did not want to chance her having to go potty afterwards even though she wears a coat. She continues to want to run, jump, and play hard. This is a really hard job keeping her in check. Hoping your Trixie's earache will be history with the Zymox. My vet told me to make sure to take them potty before putting ear meds in when it is cold out as that liquid gets too cold in there ears. You will probably be getting the same weather as us. Blessings
Patti
Stopping by to give you thumbs up on th Zymox, used it on Zoe last spring, it is good stuff.
Glad to hear Trixie's liver values came down too.

Hi Barbara:
Thanks of your suggestions on Tipper, God only knows I have thought of so many things my brain is tired of it all! I will ask the neurologist about it. I am scared and want to get Wednesday over with already. There are too many specialists to see that could potentially bring bad news and I am praying it won't. It is so nerve racking sitting and waiting for so long worrying about what they are finding. I just hate these check ups. It is nice here today and Tipper walked once. I am holding her back because of the leg. I bet Trixie is enjoying the air out there today. I hope her liver numbers keep getting better. Blessings

Here I am...haven't been on for a few days. My mother in law (age 90) fell on Monday so it was off to the ER. I stayed with her and my husband as he doesn't handle any of it well...the hospital, his mom, the whole magilla! Anyway we got home from the ER at 2am after many hours there. She broke her leg and has some other issues that were discovered during the exams, she has refused to go to the doctor for some time now-don't ask . Luckily the hospital is just 2 blocks from where we live so it's an easy back and forth, plus all the staff there have been excellent.
Anyway, I am catching up on posts. Trixie's ear infection seemed to have cleared up just from the ear wash I had and the one treatment of Mometetax that the vet had given during the appt. I did not want to use any more of the Mometetax because of all the deafness reports but seems the one dose of it cleared the ear up, Trixie stopped scratching and shaking by the next day. I did get the Zymox Otic a few days later and I'm using it just in case some little stuff was still in there. It's safe and can't hurt so I'll use it one more day.

I'm back and again catching up on everyone's news. My mother in law was moved to a rehab a few days ago and we are hoping she will then stay on there at the "extra assisted" living that is part of the complex. I think she realizes, and perhaps is even relieved, that she will not be living alone in her apt. anymore. She just cannot be alone anymore even with us just 10 minutes away.
It all has been stressful for us, as these situations are and my sister-in-law has been a no show and as usual unhelpful. She's finally coming in tomorrow and gracing us with her presence! Do I sound bitter?? Not going to get into all of that here but I'm sure you can sense the frustration.
Anyway Trixie's ear cleared up quickly and I am glad to have the Zymox Otic on hand..seems like good stuff.
Trixie has major cabin fever, just bored and getting into mischief in the house. Every morning while I'm having my coffee she goes into the girls room and steals something- a slipper, a stuffed animal..then trots by the kitchen where I am at the table...back and forth she goes showing me that she's got something she shouldn't have until I get up and chase her down. Typical terrier...she will never put down anything, it's always got to be a tug of war...her favorite activity. She also loves tearing up those paper bags so she's been doing a lot of that since our walks have been no more than about 10 minutes these days. Even she wants back in the house so she can get the sweater off!!
Just got my next 2 months supply of Vetoryl and thinking about if I should go all generic next order. I'm so torn...vet thinks it will be fine. It will certainly save me money but if it changes her condition I would be so mad at myself. Well- I've got a number of weeks to think about it. Hope everyone in this polar vortex is keeping warm!!

Hi Barbara:
Too bad about your mother in law you have had a rough time with family lately. Sorry your sister in law does not seem like too much of a helper. The weather is brutal today and I must take Tipper out to therapy for her leg. It is getting better. Tipper is acting like Trixie very naughty. Tipper is so bored she has had it with all the Dr.'s and not going outside to walk. We just had a wind advisory come across for here too!. WE are supposed to get more snow and then the polar vortex again. Oh how lucky! I do like the snow but this temperature stuff is too much. My elderly neighbor is sick with the flu again. Trixie is going to have to tuff it out with the sweater or get huge goose bumps the next few days! Blessings

Back in the deep freeze here again and a coating of snow this morning. I for one welcomed a fresh white coating on the very dirty clumps of ice and snow here in the city...at least it looks a little better but it won't last for long.
Trixie has been unhappy having to wear her sweater but luckily this morning met up with her Bichon friend named Wrigley. With this bitter cold no one is out for very long so there's very little contact with other dogs. Trixie is so social always on the lookout for a dog to sniff. They got about 10 minutes or so in a courtyard, both running around peeing and pooping..it was monkey see, monkey do with these two. :D Both of us "moms" were happy that all business got taken care of lickety split so we could get back inside. Both dogs got the icy paws and pathetically were lifting their front and back legs in pain, so we knew playtime was over. We scooped them both up and headed into the warm lobby...this is some winter!! Hope everyone is staying warm if it's freezing where you are!!

Hi Barbara:
We are having 50 mile and hour wind gusts and it is so frigid out. I think the reason why the neurologist said that most seizures happen at nite more than in the day is the brain is resting. He said that is normal to have them at nite is when most of the activity happens. I got her ACTH and Chances corona test. I don't want Chance to have it either but if he does he got it at the breeders and has had it almost 14 years now, and he would have exposed Lucky to it. SO Grace may still have a shot at staying. Chance has never been really sick so if he does have it chances are it will never mutate into anything. Too cold for Tipper to walk and she gained more weight. I have to get her over to the other dog food by next week she will be totally on it. I did it slow so no pancreatitis. She will probably be going to 30mg Vetoryl again as she is uncontrolled. Glad Trixie is doing well on this dosage and hope she continues. Blessings

Hi Barbara, I agree, it's cold out enough that you want them to do their business and get on with it, so you can get back inside. Molly isn't interested in being out long either. Not that she is given much of a choice these days. Carry her out, do her thing and come in. Unfortunately she has a hard time with that as she has to walk to get things moving if you know what I mean. LOL
I see it's going to be brrrrr at least into mid Feb, so I'm hoping March is going to be a better month, as I don't know if I dare hope for end of Feb warmth. LOL

Trixie throwing up tonight. Definitely not feeling well. Was fine all day but around 10pm she threw up, then again about a half hour later...and then outside on her walk at 11pm, and now with an empty stomach she's hacking up some bile...
So nervous and worried. Of course I did not give the nighttime Cushings meds. She had her same supper as usual and was begging for food like always during our dinner. When she was outside at 11 she had normal poops. She does not seem to be tender in her abdomen.
I feel like it's going to be a long night. Just hoping this is a short tummy upset but we haven't had this kind of vomiting in a long time. :(

Do you have any SEB (Slippery Elm Bark)? That could help her tummy settle. You can syringe it, if you need to. I wouldn't give her anything for a while though. Don't withhold her water. Just regulate it. A little bit every 1/2 hour or so, then take away.
Big hugs,
Trixie

Hi Kathy,
Don't have slippery elm. She just now again heaved and threw up some foamy bile...stomach definitely empty. I brought in an ice cube for her to lick but she didn't want any....
She's got me so worried...
Trixie
02-04-2014, 01:55 AM
no way she's dehydrated this soon....she drank before but of course she threw that up...no, not giving her anything for now. She seems a little more settled at the moment. I can't take my eyes off her...just watching. We've been so lucky for months....I hope this is a doggie stomach virus.
Just now she started some panting....oh no
Budsters Mom
02-04-2014, 01:57 AM
Did you take her for a walk today. Could she have eaten something nasty?
Trixie
02-04-2014, 02:02 AM
we didn't walk much today..was a big snow storm. She's on ad off panting which is so worrisome. I think this is the first time she hasn't had her Cushings meds at night. Don't know if it's that or if she's panting from the gastro upset.
It's not like we've never been through something like this but it's so long ago now...it's really got me rattled. Oh no...heaving again,

well...we are just back from the Animal Medical Center. My husband and I took Trixie there at 4:30am. She was throwing up every 20-30 minutes from 10pm til we left, and panting..she was so distressed, I was beside myself.
I was so worried and we weren't sleeping anyway...I would have had to wait until at least 9am for my vet and I got so concerned, just wanted to get her seen. The Animal Med Ctr is 24 hour and it took us about 7 minutes to get there. Lots of cabs out and zero traffic at that hour! I was so fearful it might be pancreatitis. They didn't think so based on their exam, vet said she did not have the kind of pain associated with it though to be safe they did run the panel and the results will take a few days. They checked electrolytes and potassium and that was normal.
They did an x-ray to check for any obstruction and there was none. She has a bad bout of gastritis--so she got cerenia and metronidazole both by iv injection and a bubble of fluid so she doesn't get dehydrated. I'm so glad we took her when we did because no one was waiting when we got there and they saw right away. It just took awhile for her to have the IV meds. Anyway...at least she could come home with us...I begged the vet to let me take her and I promised to call if she was still vomiting today...she hasn't since about 4am.
I'm still shaky...I guess lack of sleep will do that on top of the nervous state I was in. She's off food for a bit and no Cushings meds this morning. The vet will check in with me later to see how she is and decide about when to start the vetoryl again. Poor pup, she is so exhausted...me too, and since the bed is still unmade I think we may pop back in it for a little nap.
I am hoping she will improve during the day and she really needs some sleep...all the heaving she did really wore her out.
I'll update later and hope it will be good news.

Whew!! I'm so relieved to know you're all back home again, safe and sound. Also very relieved to know she's been evaluated. I woulda done exactly the same thing and as you say, the fringe benefit is that you didn't have to wait in a line at 4:30...:o
It will be very interesting to see how the pancreatitis labwork does turn out. When my Peg had a bad case of vomiting and diarrhea, it turned out that she really did have pancreatitis even though she didn't have any belly pain and all her standard bloodwork -- including lipase and amylase -- were all normal. My vet said, "Nah, I don't think its pancreatitis," but we both still opted to run the special cPL test just to be sure. When he called me two days later and told me it was sky-high, we were both flabbergasted. But the good part of the story is that Peg was handled just like Trixie with Cerenia and eventually frequent, small, very bland meals and she ended up doing just fine right at home. So no matter what's causing the upset for Trixie, I've got all fingers crossed that you're past the worst of things!

well...I never did get that nap in...too worried, too keyed up.
Marianne-Yes, I am very interested to see what the panc. panel shows. Somehow I feel like this is more than just a bad gastritis attack. I am sitting here watching her. I'm a bit worried. She's not vomiting anymore but she doesn't seem right. How was Peg the first day after you had this happen?
Thanks Sharlene and Patti, a shock for me too. Yesterday at this time Trixie was tearing up a paper bag and pulling all her toys out of the basket. She was perfectly fine all day, very energetic...everything normal, until she started vomiting around 10pm.
I'm so concerned all I can do is sit here and watch her. Every once in awhile she puts her head up and pants. The vet mentioned possibly leaving her at the medical center but I really didn't want to. She also seemed better then...maybe I made a mistake by not leaving her in the hospital.
I wrote that awhile ago..
Trixie sat up started panting and was not good, seemed distressed. Wasn't sure what to do but I thought maybe she needed to poop, I could smell some gas from her. Vet said on the xray that her bowel was full and it was diarrhea. When we left the hospital she pooped...it was soft but not the worst I've seen. So I just took her out. She did a very strange gel-like poop, no straining. Not at all bloody but grayish-pink, never have a seen this before. It scared me...I called the vet at the hospital but had to leave a message, I'm going to keep trying.
But since she did that weird poop Trixie seems better. No more panting...breathing normally and seems much more comfortable. Maybe she needed that out of her. Anyway...I'm just watching her like crazy. Keep you posted.
Thanks everyone,
Barbara
Zoe pants like crazy when she has tummy troubles, hopefully now that Trixie pooed she will pant less.
Barbara I am so sorry that she is sick. I know how scary it gets. Hopefully the meds will all kick in and her tummy will be better soon.

Trixie has been just laying here most of the day, except for the one trip we took outside. I carried her out and then back in after she did her business.
I didn't expect her to bounce back so quickly but I'm feeling so scared, I've never seen her like this. She had no sleep, and then the stress of the hospital but still I'm worried about how she seems.

Has Trixie eaten today?
Plain rice would be good and she likes that right? I can't remember, can she have chicken or not? Some ground cooked chicken with the rice is usually what I give molly.

I want to thank all of you so much for "waiting" for me here with your posts! I have been a nervous wreck, and like Addy's been going through with the no sleep, it makes you shaky. I don't know what I would do if not for this board!! You are all life-savers.
My vet promptly called me back...I was pleasantly surprised at that. He said to bring her right over, and since it's across the street I picked her up and ran right out. She needed more fluids and he checked her all out. 2nd time today for Trixie. Can't rule out Pancreatitis but he also thought she would have way more pain..but as he said some dogs are stoic, so you never know. She also had a fever...low grade. He said the fluids would help with that. I think she liked being in the cool air, she did kind of perk up a bit. Did another long pee and some icky poops on the way home...but at least she's getting it out of her system. He said many dogs have been in with vomiting...so something must be going around and here in the city dogs are always coming in contact.
She wouldn't walk there but she did walk back, came in and went to the kitchen for the water dish which is not there...I let her lick an ice cube. I wonder if she's feeling the lack of vetoryl. Oh...just realized I forgot to ask the vet when should I start it back up?? She's not eating food yet. If tomorrow she's better and I give her some rice should I give her the vetoryl then??? Right now is the most comfortable I've seen her so I think the fluids really helped. More bad weather due tomorrow...good thing I have puppy pads.
Thanks again everyone, I'm feeling a little more relieved..plus my husbands on the way home thank goodness.

If it were me I would not rush the Vetoryl, maybe give her another day to see how she is tomorrow. Did the vet say what he thinks caused this? It would be weird for her to have pancreatitis as you give her only low fat things and no snacks. Did she ever have it before? I am hoping this is just a tiny bump in the road. You are probably worn out from worry. The snow storm is coming so good thing you have the puppy pads. Blessings

I'd make sure that Trixie is back to normal and herself before starting vetroyl back up. So, eating normal, no throwing up, normal activity level, normal poops. If all that happens, give it 24 hours and then we can think about starting her back.
LOL I always like to err on the side of caution, just in case. :)

Hi Patti,
No, she has never had Pancreatitis but since it's common in schnauzers I always get worried about it when Trixie gets gastro problems. This time the vomiting was so severe that I thought it may be a possibility, it still may be but I hope not. You're right we only do low-fat. Even treats I read the package and only get things that are 6% max fat or lower. Not always easy to find.
I think you're right about the Vetoryl. I'm so worried about missing all these doses. I'll wait until I'm sure she's past the worst of this.
No-he didn't say what causes this, just that he's had a lot of dogs coming in with the same. Poor girl...she really got it bad. The pancreatic panel test is back maybe Thursday or Friday...I'm curious as to what it will say. Of course I hope it's not positive!

yes, thanks Sharlene...good advice to wait until she is really okay and able to eat even if it's just rice. She needs food with those pills anyway.
She didn't even look for the treats at the vet. :( Not at all the usual crazy dog I walk around with. I hope she'll be back to normal soon!!

Addy, I will definitely wait on the Cushings meds...just want her to get better, as I know you understand. She's sleeping much more peacefully at the moment. She's supposed to get a metronidazole at 6pm...guess I try to make a rice ball and hide it in there but I don't think she's even interested in food right now.
Patti--whatever is going around it hit Trixie hard. I just am hoping that she improves tonight..last night was awful.
Barbara
Awww- it is so wonderful to see them sleep peacefully after seeing them have a rough go of it. Soak it in, Barbara. Koko had the doggie flu one year, started up out of nowhere too.
Metronidazole has anti inflammatory properties so hopefully it will help calm things down pronto.:):):)
Now lets get you to close your eyes for a bit as well. I can sing you a lullaby:D:D:D well, maybe I better not.
Once when my dad was in ICU and was totally out of it, I was sitting next to his bed singing a lullaby he had made up and always sang to his animals. I thought it would make him feel better, he was off in la la land. All of a sudden out of nowhere- he turns and looks at me and says in a very clear, strong, voice, Addy, will you stop singing that damn song:eek::rolleyes::o:D
I still laugh over that memory.:D:D
Trixie
02-04-2014, 09:56 PM
haha..love that story Addy!! Nice memory!!
Trixie is refusing the rice, does not want to eat yet. I had to force a small ball of it with the metronidazole down her throat but otherwise I'll keep offering every so often. I won't force her to eat, and I can't make her anyway. I just let her have a small bit of water from her dish which she did seem to want. So far tiny bit of rice and water staying down.
Still very subdued and panting a bit but improved over what she was like earlier. I'll take it and hoping she has a good night.

update on Trixie-- she is at the Animal Medical Center. Her pancreatic panel was positive for pancreatitis.
We actually did not have a bad night. We slept and she slept...until about 5am when she was up and panting, and I just knew she had pain. She gave me a very pitiful look...like she needed help.
Without wanting to admit it I knew this was something more than bad tummy trouble. Her personality was so different. She was so subdued, was barely moving, staring into space...just everything about her was off.
She did manage to sound off to the next door dog as we were leaving today so it gave me hope that she will recover from this and hopefully soon.
I called the vet from the Med Center at about 7:00am to say our night was okay but Trixie would not take any food, wouldn't look or sniff at food and in a very weird way, she knew she couldn't eat. The vet had just gotten the test results and thought it best that I bring her back and she'll get treated there. I knew it was the right thing because yesterday I was so scared, the dog was in such distress, I knew I couldnt have her lying here like that again..it wouldn't be right, she needed more care, so off we went at 7:30am in the middle of a raging ice storm! It was no fun getting there and getting back but I did it.
I'm awaiting a call from the Internal Specialty Dept there to get the name of the vet now that she's admitted. It's one of the best places in the country so at least I know she will be well taken care of. My usual vet across the street doesn't have anyone with the dogs at night which I cannot understand. The Med. Center is 24 hour care and she promised me that they give a lot of extra attention in the dept where Trixie is and that the pens are comfortable with memory foam pads. They have a huge staff so I take her at her word. Can barely stand it here at home without her though!!
So that's my sad news. Only worry is what else they will find on the ultrasound. SO afraid something is lurking...if it's just this pancreatitis I will be happy...just don't want anymore complications.
I'll update when I hear from them...they said they would be in touch after the ultrasound today. Hoping for the best. A have a stress headache that is pounding..it didn't help that we left in a raging storm...it's an ice skating rink here today!!

Thank you all for the good wishes and support, I so appreciate each and every post!
I am still waiting for them to call and update me on Trixie.
Patti- I am as shocked as you are! She gave no signs at all, in fact she's been better than ever. 2 very long walks over the weekend and so energetic all day Monday, being very frisky and pulling toys all over the house, all her usual antics. At 9pm she was in her bed and she did look a little off-then she started with the vomiting at 10pm. Someone in the park on Sunday had just asked me how she was doing with Cushing's disease and I was telling them how we were going on months of doing great. There's the jinx again. So, I am as surprised as you are. Not one thing was different in Trixie's diet...she did not get into anything over the weekend or on Monday. Could she have eaten something to bring this on? Not that I can see...nothing was different.
By habit I keep looking over to her various spots in the house where she would be laying down and it's so strange that she's not here...but she is where she needs to be and I feel like she even knew that.
My heart breaks when I see how she tried to be normal yesterday!! She walked a little outside and then would look at me to be picked up. :( Even this morning...walked out in the icy sleet and did her business...trying to be her usual self. My husband kept saying she's just recovering, but I knew something was more serious.
Addy, I'm so glad to hear that Alivia recovered well from this, thank you for mentioning that! Thank-you Mel and Kathy for being here too!!
I'm on pins and needles for the sono results...very nervous that something else could be wrong but hoping NOT!!

Barbara, I have to tell you that I am not surprised by the diagnosis. Everything you described (including the gelatinous poop :o) is pretty much consistent with pancreatitis. I know the apparent lack of belly pain had them stumped, but I've read that only 50% of afflicted dogs exhibit pain when manipulated. As I told you, my Peg didn't flinch at all upon examination.
I also think it's pretty common for attacks to arise out of the blue. That's what oftentimes makes it such a seemingly unlikely diagnosis. But I don't think it's anything you did or anything you should feel badly about. FWIW, it took my Peg about a week to bounce back from her acute attack. I have subsequently kept her on a moderate protein/lowfat diet and she has done well, although the research is not clearcut as to whether restricted fat is really necessary in the long run.
Anyway, I'm waiting right alongside you and will be so anxious to hear how your little girl is doing.
Marianne
Cush pups are prone to it. The vet suspects Zoe has chronic pancreatitis after seeing her ultra sound last April. I sometimes worry is that really what all her panting is about, especially when she vomited that one time.
Barbara, I'm sure her ultra sound will be fine. Keep in mind older dogs may show irregularities in some of their organs, we probably do as well.:):):)
I hate waiting for phone calls, don't you? Did I tell you I read an article about mindfulness in Time magazine so I downloaded an app on my Iphone with meditation music, etc. Well the app kept sending me messages every night about a new "mindful link." Well hubby charges my phone for me every night and kept seeing these messages. He is not very techy and does not understand 'apps". So he very seriously asked me if I had gotten involved with some mind group in California. He was worried I was being influenced by some crazy cult:rolleyes::rolleyes::p Why he thought they were in California, I cant figure out.
I still cant stop laughing.

Just heard from the med. center. Great vet--didn't rush off the phone, and on a side note my usual vet just called to check in as well, which I really appreciate. Wow...amazing. Today I have faith in vets..sometimes I don't.
Sono was good! No bad things lurking, no tumors, no blockages, organs looked clean. Her pancreatic panel was in the gray zone and based on the fact that she was still off today and wouldn't eat they thought it would be the diagnosis. Now the blood lipase test and the the sono rule out pancreatitis. Her pancreas looked just fine on the sono. All levels on lipase etc are gray zone. White count a bit high...maybe an infection lurking as well. There was the enlarged liver -which was not that bad and they believe Cushings related and a slight thickening in one area of the small intestine which is also not that prominent and is most likely due to this bout of gastritis, or maybe a bacterial overgrowth which I told her we had before. That overgrowth issue in 2012 was clostridium gave us a lot of trouble until we wiped it out with Tylan. Maybe it's causing trouble again? They are going to check on it.
So they will continue today with all the IV support...fluids, anti nausea, metronidazole until she is feeling well enough to eat and that the diarrhea is over-or close to over. Then she can be released. Vet thought probably tomorrow...we'll know more later.
What a roller coaster. So beyond thankful the sono was good...I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop..starting to feel like they were going to find something really awful...it was all manifesting while I was here waiting for the call.
We discussed other bouts of this type of thing she's had in the past and how since Cushings was controlled we have had excellent digestion and poops and almost no problems at all. She was surprised to hear that, as she said the opposite is sometimes true with Cushings.
Back to no definitive reason why this was so much worse than usual, but at least the most serious reasons are ruled out. Feeling really thankful and just hoping she improves enough to come home tomorrow.

Just saw your post Addy....that is too funny. My husband is the same...very low tech. So funny he thought you might be going California-cult!!!
Marianne...you'll see my update now. Every time Trixie has gotten a bad bout of this we always think it's pancreatitis and just like today the tests show border line results but then it's gets ruled out. Maybe she has it but the pancreas doesn't get damaged? Would that be possible!? She always gets every sign except the bad pain. The vomiting, the diarrhea, the poop color and behavior, always scream pancreatitis, not just to me but to the vets and also it is very prevalent in schnauzers. It's probably happened 4-5 times that we end up at the vet with what seems like a certain case and yet she never gets the diagnosis.
Thats why we rushed to the Med center with her at 4am yesterday, I was sure this time she had it. It's a bit confusing and I'm going to ask further questions about the "gray area" on the panel when I talk to the vet again.
ugh...what we all go through with our dogs...the nerves are shot!!

Wow, I'm so relieved that nothing else is amiss with our Little Miss! ;)
Like you, I'd be really interested in the exact lab results. I'm guessing, though, that she may have come up in the mid-range area of the Spec cPL test which is neither a definite rule-in nor rule-out. If so, pancreatitis may still be the culprit even though the test could not confirm with certainty. For example, here's IDEXX's related interpretation page (look under the tab for "How to/Resources"):
http://www.idexx.com//view/xhtml/en_us/smallanimal/reference-laboratories/testmenu/innovative-tests/spec-cpl.jsf?SSOTOKEN=0
Anyway, most important thing is just for her to feel better!!

thanks Marianne..going to read the info now. I want to see all the numbers...she mentioned the lipase test which I want to see as well.
She sure had all the signs and symptoms. Meanwhile they're treating her with the same things they would if all tests were certain. Hoping she rallies and is able to come home asap. We miss her! :p

Hi Barbara, my what a day you and Miss Trixie have had.
It does seem that she has it but not maybe severe enough to cause damage to the pancreas itself. Just enough to really make her ill. It sounds like this is a very good place, so I'm sure they'll fix her right up.
Of course you know when something is wrong. How could you not :)
Still hanging in with you .
hugs,
Sharlene and Molly muffin
Just checking in to see if anything new. Hopefully you are sleeping.
Hope Miss Trixie is too and comes home soon.
Hugs and love

Are you going over to visit Trixie tonight and see how she is doing? Or do they discourage visits while in the special ward? :(
I'm sure the house does feel strange without her there. I always think the same thing.

Hi everyone,
The vet called at around 6pm and said Trixie showed marked improvement though still not eating. :( They were going to offer some food again tonight. She said Trixie was alert and pretty comfortable and tolerating the medication just fine. She's now very well hydrated and apparently over the diarrhea, which is surprise because she had some this morning. Most likely will be able to come home tomorrow.
I don't even know if they allow visitation...I didn't ask because I would be so afraid that she would see me and get all excited that she was leaving. I just hated leaving her and got all teary-eyed so I don't think I could see her and then have to walk away again.
We can hardly stand it that she's not here. It is so strange in the house!! My husband said it was awful walking in from work and not getting the big greeting she gives him. I can't imagine if it ended up being the 3 day stay they predicted this morning! One night is bad, but 3...? Glad it won't be that long. She did say they would like it if she started eating before she left, so we'll see in the morning how she's doing.
It's so strange to see her refuse food...because this is a first!
Got a late afternoon cat nap in and feeling better. We're really looking forward to getting there and bringing her home...hope it will be tomorrow.
Thanks again everyone for going through this with me!! Your messages really helped me with all the worries the last couple of days!! :D
