Hi,
My 10 yo Ruby was just diagnosed with cushings and diabetes. The vet is treating the cushings first - with 30mg daily dose of vetoryl. Last night she had her second dose. She's throwing up now when she drinks water. Trembling and breathing hard at times - not panting, but breathing hard.
I'd like to hear from others with experience with vetoryl. Do these side effects go away? I'm thinking that the throwing up is from her not eating enough food when she took her pill. She doesn't want her good food, but will eat treats.
I'm new to this and it's very upsetting - all the unknowns. She's our baby and I'm so scared. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please please please listen. STOP the trilostane NOW. Vomiting is a sign of overdose/too high of a dose. The dosage your dog is on seems high for a doxie. Please tell us Ruby's weight.
Instructions for that drug are to STOP should vomiting occur. Since she immediately vomited I am wondering if the diagnosis was wrong. She might not have cushing's.
Please tell us her story as much as you can. I am on lunch break but hopefully others will see this and follow up. Again, no more trilo for now ok?! Thanks!!! Kim

She weighs 17 lbs took her in last week because she was urinating in her sleep. They did urine test and bodywork found high glucose and elevated liver enzymes. Then they tested for cushings. First dose of vetoryl didn't seen to bother her. Last night she there up her water three times.

Diabetes and cushings have the same symptoms. Cushings is not something you have to treat right away but Diabetes is. You should be treating diabetes first and worry about cushing's later.
Secondly - when a dog has diabetes they OFTEN have false positives for cushing's meaning they don't really have it.
For this reason it'd be nice to have test results. Urination during sleep is not uncommon and could be a number of things. I'm going to link you to some general info on cushings ... please review and let us know what symptoms your dog does have.
Again - stop the trilostane. The vet should have given you specific instructions. If you read the link I gave you it should verify that I am not making it up. ;)
Your dog can get very ill or even DIE if given the drug when low and I'm sharing this not to scare you but to make you aware of how serious it is that you withold trilo.
Here's the link. Sorry but I have to go to work now. :(

EEEEKKKKK!!!!!! :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
If I am reading this right, she was started on Vetoryl based only on high liver enzymes and elevated glucose???? PLEASE tell me this is not right - that your dog has had at the very least an ACTH?
This is critical! DO NOT GIVE ANY MORE VETORYL!

I just checked to make sure you were still signed on so you will see our messages asap.
Kim is right - what you are describing could very, very easily be from the drug and an overdose can be fatal. This is not something that can be played with even a little bit. These are very powerful drugs with terrible side effects if they are not given correctly. Based on the info so far, there is nothing to indicate she has Cushing's.
The combination of diabetes and Cushing's means the DIABETES should be addressed first and IMMEDIATELY. If your vet doesn't understand this, find another vet now and get her in asap.
I am trying to scare you into action - get her to a vet immediately and have her sugars check as well as the electrolytes. This is a very bad place your baby is in, it sounds like, and time is of the essence.
hang in there....we will be with you all the way...but right now, get her to the vet to get the diabetes taken care of first and to have the electrolytes checked (this is to see if she is in danger from the Vetoryl, which I fear.)
Hugs,
Leslie and the gang
Our sister site is one for diabetes and I urge you to get over there, register and talk with them asap...as soon as you are back from the vet, that is. ;) You can find them at -

Now you're off the site so I hope that means you are in the car on the way to the vet. Please let us hear from you as soon as you can. We are quite concerned about your baby girl.

Leslie, it looks as though some Cushing's-specific test was done. But as we know here, the diagnostic Cushing's blood tests can give "false positives" when another illness (such as diabetes) is going on. And I've got to chime in with you and Kim that if Ruby has diabetes, the elevated blood sugar is the first priority in terms of treatment.

Hello and welcome to you and Ruby.
How is Ruby doing now? did you take her to an ER vet or your vet? I really agree that the diabetes has to be controlled and then see what is what with the cushings possibility.
We also have a k9diabetes sister forum where they might be helpful to you.

I think all the others have covered the most immediate of our concerns. I know that you must be terrified.
We'll be here to help you in any way we can. Please do let us know how she is doing. We are worry warts here.
