My pomeranian-poodle dog(26 pounds) is 15 years old. He has been drinking an excessive amount of water for a couple of years now. He was tested for Cushings in January of 2011. He tested negative for the low dose dexamethasone suppression test.
cortisol sample 1 was 2.0 range (1-5)
cortisol sample 2 Dex was < .7 range (0-1.4)
cortisol sample 3 Dex was <.7 range (0-1.4)

He also had a bile acid test at that time, results:
bile acides, pre meal 1.4 normal < 13
Bile acids, post meal 22.6 normal < 25

It was discovered he had a parathyroid tumor and it was removed in 8/2/12. I was hoping that would be the cause of his excessive intake of water but his excessive water consumption didn't go away.

His most recent (November 2012) values that were abnormal are:
alkp 213 normal (23-212)
segs, neutrophil,% 80 normal (60-77)
Eosinophil, % 0 normal (2-10)
monocyte % 2.1 normal (3-10)
urine epithelial cells Positive, hospital comments: 2+

His glucose was 76 normal (70-143)
Cholestrol 164 normal(110-320)
urine specific gravity 1.024 normal (1.016-1.08)

His hair is thin but I don't think I would call it excessive. I can't really say he has a pot belly. He is eating well ; slowing down but still in pretty good shape. He has a ton of fatty cysts on him ( I think that is the poodle in him)

In may of 2012 his alkp was 162 normal (23-212)
monocyte % 2.7 normal (3-10)

In January 2011
his alkp was 285 normal (23-212)
Urine specific gravity 1.036 normal (1.016-1.08)

January 2010
his alkp was 240 normal (23-212)

Should I have him tested for Cushings again?
Anyone think this might be kidney disease and not cushings? his bun and crea are within the normal range though.
The second bile test listed above was in the high range of normal; could this indicate anything?
thanks for reading this:)

Hi and welcome to our site. Sorry your boy is having troubles.

After the surgery, did you notice any change (as in being back to normal) in at all in the water intake and urination?

There are multiple glands and has your vet check the parathyroid related hormones to see if indeed the surgery was successful or the tumor did not spread? I do know that this gland influences the calcium levels and elevated calcium levels (Hypercalcemia) can cause increased drinking and urinating.

The results you posted do look to be normal. The alkp levels dropped from Jan 2011 to May of this year so this is normal as well.

Did your vet mention kidney problems, is this why you mentioned it? If the BUN and Creatinine levels are okay, then kidneys are functioning okay.
