My long-haired dachshund "Patches" just started taking Trilostane. He is 14. What I'm wondering is what are behavior changes that others have seen after their dog started taking Trilostane. I am hoping that Patches will not be so edgy and will be a bit more relaxed. He is usually very neurotic....whines incessantly with no way to console him.

Hi and Welcome,

I am glad you found your way here. We usually start out asking a ton of questions:
how was Cushings diagnosed?
what were recent test results?
what symptoms does Patches display?
how much does Patches weigh and what is the current Trilostane dose?

That's just to get you started:D:D:D:D

As far as behavior, edgy and whines a lot, I am not sure. Sometimes dogs can display irritable behavior when their thyroid is off and Cush pups can sometimes have lower T3 and T4 that resolves once Cushings treatment starts.

My Zoe licks everything, she has a mouth fetish I think:rolleyes::rolleyes: If I think about it, she is not as reactive as she used to be with strangers, so she is calmer now. Maybe more mellow is the word.:):)

Hopefully others may have had similar behavior and or thoughts.

I know others will be along soon to welcome you.

Hello and Welcome.

The main thing that treatment of Cushings does is to treat the symptoms, since it cannot be cured. So, hopefully more calm, less panting, controlled amount of food and water intake, resulting in less accidents in the home.

Feel free to ask any question, any time, someone will be by to try and answer it. :)

hugs,
Sharlene

[QUOTE=addy;81453]Hi and Welcome,

It was diagnosed by a Veterinary specialist. His ACTH went from 6 to 29. Patches weighs about 18 lbs. I am not sure of the current Trilostane does. I'll have to look on the box. His symptoms are typical from what I understand...drinks a lot of water, panting, saggy stomach. He has more accidents than he used to have. When he was younger he could go forever it seemed and never have an accident in the house. Now I often let him out in the middle of the night.

We got him from dachshund rescue when he was 1.5 years old. (He had back surgery when he was 10 to repair a disc...that surgery was completely successful and he had a full recovery.)

Welcome to you and Patches, what a sweet face!!

I'm pretty new here too. It's a good place for questions.

A little while after my Gabby started Trilostane she seemed to calm down, not as edgy and calm, before she was pretty frantic when it came to food,(she tore open locked cabinets, etc ) there were times she would whine too. We noticed it more in the evening, but since she has a sensitivity to fireworks and thunder we thought it was from that as we had plenty of thunder storms and lots of poppers go off during July. She stopped all that and has been normal even now that she is in Addisons and not even on Trilostane any more.
