10 y/o dachshund on trilostane - problems with itching, muscle weakness, walking

My 10 year old long hair dachshund has just been diagnosed with cushings. He weighs around 20 lbs and has been put on 25 mg of trilostane once daily. He has been on trilostane around 5 weeks now. While he seems significantly improved...I have noticed him scratching more. Has anyone had any experience with trilostane causing skin irritation, or itching?

I have just started this, be patient with me. My 10 year old dachshund has been on trilostane for about 5 weeks now. Many of his symptoms seem to be improving...the drinking, panting, coat improving. He is more energetic. But his legs seem weak, he is dragging his front feet, as if walking on his knuckles. Is this common to cushings? Does it get better? Is there anyway I can help? High protein diet? Exercise? He is no longer up for walks. Or should I be looking for other causes?

Hi and welcome to our site.

At times when the cortisol levels drop (because of the Trilo) more into line, other issues seem to be "uncovered" such as arthritic and any discomfort associated with it and some allergies; including skin. The excess cortisol causes muscle breakdown over time and it takes time to build up the muscle tissue again. Mention these symptoms to your vet as well.

Also, what were the results of the ACTH testing that should have been performed either 10 or 14 days since your initial dose of Trilostane. This will indicate where the cortisol levels are.

PS - But if your dog is becoming more and more lethargic, I certainly would take him to the vets as the cortisol levels may have fallen too low and make sure his electrolytes are checked too.
