Zoe is a female (spayed) BT who just turned 8 years old in March. After many trips to the vet, many tests, and about $2500.00 in the past few months, we just got this diagnosis yesterday.

It began with taking her to the vet because she was itchy all the time, licking her paws like crazy and got this buildup of excess skin on the insides of her ears and on her nose.

Vet recommended switching her to a different dog food. She had been on Iams all of her life and did fine on it, but we switched her over to Blue Buffalo Turkey & Potato.

After about 2 months on this food, she was even worse. The vet recommended allergen testing. The results of that testing were that she is highly allergic to potatoes (it figures, right?) along with a lot of other foods. We then switched her to Avoderm Revolving Diet food – she has been on that food since 3/13/12.

At some point during all of this, she began displaying some weird symptoms…..she would sit all the time and never wanted to lay down. She would get so sleepy sitting up, that she would fall asleep and “catch herself” before she almost fell over. Another trip to the vet – because I thought she might have an inner ear infection. Her ears tested fine, no infection. Vet did an X-ray and said that it appeared her liver was enlarged. She prescribed Ursadiol once a day. Also found out that Zoe had a bladder infection, so 10 days of antibiotics for that. Vet felt that the symptom of not wanting to lay down might be pain relating to the enlarged liver, so Tramadol 2x a day for pain relief.

2 weeks later, at her checkup, bladder infection is gone, liver enzyme tests show no change, but vet recommends leaving her on the liver medicine. Zoe lays down and actually sleeps comfortably when she is on the pain medication. Her appetite has improved and she is once again eating all of her food.

Vet sends us to a veterinary hospital where they can run an abdominal ultrasound. Results of the ultrasound show liver is normal, but one of her adrenal glands is enarged. They send us back to my normal vet to have a Cushing’s test done. And, as I said, we found out yesterday that this test was positive.

We have an appointment to talk to our vet on Monday regarding treatment plan, meds, etc.

I have read everything I can find on Cushing’s Disease in dogs……and I’m terrified of these drugs…..and wondering if the treatment is worse than the disease???

I’d rather leave Zoe on pain meds for the rest of her life than have her taking meds that have such bad side effects.

I do not know what to do. Zoe is my baby…..my child…..the love of my life (after hubby, of course!) I just want her to be happy and comfortable. :(

I have approved this post. Please be sure to submit a reply email so your membership can be approved and all your posts can be seen.

In regards to the drugs for treating cushings - I am glad you found us because whatever you read that has you frightened is unjustified. First off - deep breaths - Zoe can be just fine and lead a very happy life. This disease is very treatable and really not that hard to treat.

The key to success is an active owner (which you are or you wouldn't have found us) and a knowledgeable vet. The drugs are powerful and work wonders when used correctly. Pets get into trouble only when owners and/or vets are clueless. That frankly is why this site exists. I had a clueless vet over 7 yrs ago and the people here helped me thru it and my dog lived to be 16 1/2 and passed of non cushings age issues.

OK - so now that you know your dog can be fine and the drugs are not bad let's get down to business. :D Please tell us the exact tests done to diagnose cushings. (other than the ultrasound) and the scores on those tests (numbers) Also it would be helpful to know the readings on any bloodwork done (anything that is high or low)

Lastly you mentioned infections but nothing about excessive drinking or eating. Please read this link and tell us what symptoms your dog has. Thanks!!! Kim

Hi Zoe's Mom!

My pup, Chance, was diagnosed almost a month ago and I too was terrified of the drugs. However, I found this great group, learned all that I could and started him on the lowest possible dose of Vetoryl, and now he is doing much better! (symptom free)

I'm still super new to this world, but wanted to welcome you and let you know you will definately be steered in the right direction here! :)

Welcome to you and Zoe!:)

I am so glad you found this site because I could not have treated my Maddie correctly if not for all the experts here. I too had a vet who wasn't up to date on Cushings.

I used Lysodren with no side effects at all. I was very nervous at first about the drugs and didn't want to use any of them, but I had to decide if quality of life was better than my fears. My Maddie would have continue on with Cushing's as a part of her life if it wasn't for cancer. She was 12 yrs old when she passed.

You are not alone on this journey--you are part of the family. Please ask any questions you have and ask for advice as much as you want.

As Kim said please read the link she provided and list all the symptoms Zoe has. Once the experts can see the test results they can help even better.

Take care!!!:)

Hi and Welcome,

I have a Zoe too and she was diagnosed two years ago. Started on Trilostane one year ago. My Zoe also has inflammatory bowel disease and airborne allergies and eye issues so we juggle alot.

I am here to tell you breathe in and out and when you can, lock up Cushings in a drawer for a weekend so you have a break.

We will be here for you every step of the way. If it takes a village to raise a child, well, then it takes a global community to take care of a Cush pup. And that is exactly where you have come.

Welcome to you and Zoe. Like you, I have a 8 year old BT with Cushings. It is not a death sentence. You are doing the right thing signing on this site and learning as much as you can about Cushings. With this disease (and many others like it) knowledge is POWER! Best of luck!

Welcome to you and Zoe!!! Your story sounds a lot like mine!!! I have an 8 year old Boston terrier... We spent tons of money and time treating him for months before we finally found out it was cushings... We went through food allergies and bladder infections, bladder stones etc. He has been in vetoryl and is doing great, so don't worry there is hope!!! I'm glad you found us!
