I have a 13 pound male poodle that has had a cough for the past two years or so. (at least) . He was diagnosed with reverse sneeze and I was told his heart sounded fine. He had a particularily bad coughing spell (may have choked on something) last Tuesday and I grabbed him, turned him upside down and smacked him (not too hard) between the shoulderblades (as he was flopping around and almost passing out.) He quit coughing, recovered, and I got him in to a different vet that afternoon. After urinalysis showing a +2 protein level, xrays showing enlarged heart, enlarged liver, and the vet commented on a fairly hairless patch on his lower back, she told me he might have cushings disease. She gave him a diaretic (spelled wrong probably) in his vein twice to rid him of the fluid in his lungs. She sent him home on clavamox for two weeks, Lotensin, and Furosemide. He is to have blood work done again in two weeks time. The funny thing is his heart still sounds normal and has no murmer. Without the xray one would never know his heart is enlarged.
He eats like a little pig, and is a good weight. He also has urine leakage at night Started this in January) and wears tena pads in a belly band so he can still sleep with me. The vet did not think she would treat the cushings. I will get a complete copy of his blood panel when I see her next week. Any advise appreciated. Thanks, Sue in N.B.

Hi and welcome to you and your sweet boy!

I am so sorry to hear that your boy is going through all these issues and we will try to help in any way we can. Getting copies of all tests that were done and posting all abnormalities here will enable us to provide you with more meaningful feedback.

Any chronic illness and even stress can skew the results of the Cushing's tests. Strong symptoms play a huge part in making a diagnosis of Cushing's does your boy display clinical Cushing signs such as a ravenous appetite, excessive drinking/urinating, and/or a pot-bellied appearance?

Please know you are not alone on this journey as we are here walking right beside you.

Love and hugs,
Lori
