11 year old male shitzu just diagnosed with Cushings Syndrome. I would like to know the best treatment (medication) with the least side effects that is recommended preferrably from those pet owners that already have undergone treatment. Lysodren seems to be the oldest medication but has side effects and recent articles imply there are other medications that may be better and safer? Please advise.

Hi and Welcome,

I am glad you found your way here. We usually start off with 20 questions, like what tests were used to arrive at the diagnosis? What symptoms does your pup display? Any other health issues?

There is no one answer for which drug is better because it depends on the dog and each dog is different. And if one drug doesn't work out you can switch to another drug.

These days you will see more vets using Trilostane/Vetoryl. Some think it is safer than Lysodren, the older drug. It is not. So the choice boils down to your vet's experience with either drug and what you are comfortable with.

Hang in there, others will be along soon to welcome you, give you feed back and ask a ton of questions:D:D:D:D

hugs,
