Charlie, our lovely rescue corgi has had Cushings for as long as we have had him..... we took him on from the Dogs Trust charity in the uk knowing he would need long term treatment, fortunately they sponsor him for all his treatment and testing.
In the last couple of weeks Charlie has been off his food, had diarrhoea, started to bring back his food and been generally ' not quite right' yesterday morning he was really lethargic (more so than normal, he's an old timer!) and I insisted hubby took him up to the vets. Within 6 hours he had been transfered to the overnight hospital and was on a fluid drip. His last test were the best he had ever had and his Vetoryl meds seemed settled.
We are waiting for him to come back to our vets from his overnight stay at the hospital and to see what tests they did and the results. As you will understand I am scared and worried...... Any ideas what I should be thinking about where to look for help ....... that how i found the forum and reading the stories about your dogs I am delighted to have found this place :)

Hello and welcome to you and Charlie! I am so sorry to see he's in hospital but I'm glad you've found us here, everyone here has been a huge strength and support to me, I'm sure you will find the same.

I hope Charlie is brighter today, he is in the best place for getting him through his crisis. My first thoughts would be that the Vetoryl dosage, while working for a while, may have started to go awry and tipped him into an Addisonian crisis. The hospital should be able to give you lots more info today. If thats the case its likely they will take him off vetoryl for the present and start him on prednisone to help him recover.

I'm pretty new to the boards myself and still getting to grips with all the technical areas but I know our more experienced people here will ask you to post as many of the results he's had, such as acth results, lab / bloodwork results, together with reference ranges. That way they'll have as much information as possible from which to help you.

Hugs to you and Charlie, it sounds like a scary time xx

Sorry to hear about Charlie and I hope you find out what is wrong. It could be so many things. Cuush dogs can be prone to pancreatitis, depending on when his last ACTH test is, perhaps his dose needs changing. Too many things to speculate. Best to wait to hear from the hospital.

Our thoughts will be with you today pryaing for good news:):)

love,
addy

Hi and welcome to you and Charlie,

Sorry I only have a moment to post, if the ACTH stim test and Charlie's electrolytes are good then my concern would be that pancreatitis might be brewing. The spec cPL test is the best way to diagnose pancreatitis.

Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Love and hugs,
Lori

Hi and welcome to you and Charlie! :)

I wish we were meeting under better circumstances but am glad you got Charlie to the vet where he can get the care he needs. It sounds as if his cortisol may have gone too low or a pancreatic attack so you did great in getting him into the vet.

Do let us know how he is when you can!

Prayers and healing white light flying your way.
Hugs,
Leslie and the gang

Hello and welcome to you and Charlie,

First of all, it was so nice of you and your husband to take Charlie, knowing that he had health problems. I'm sure it is wonderful to have them pay for his Cushing's treatment.

I am so sorry to hear that Charlie is not feeling well, but so glad he got the help he needed and spent the night at the hospital, hopefully getting better. You are right that you have found a wonderful, informative place, with lots of caring and helpful people. We will be here to guide and support you and Charlie with whatever you find out. Please let us know how he is doing when you have a chance.

Thank you all so much for your kind words, your love and prayers is so greatly received and appreciated.
Charlie is still at our vets, having more blood tests and hopefully his ACTH tests that they did yesterday will be back soon. From what I can get from them over the phone they have done kidney function tests too.
Our vet has had a dog with Cushings so I figure she's going to be extra specially on the ball with Charlie (plus she thinks he's a sweetie!)
I'm going to ask them for a print out of all his results from these tests and the last ACTH tests as they said the last ones were the best he had ever had - this makes me think even more that it was an addisonian episode as there was no change to his medication level which is only a 10mg dose - when we first had him he was on 10mg twice daily so he has had a marked change before, and maybe he needs it altering again? I'm going to do some research on the pancreatitis aspect so I can go armed with the right things to ask.
Thank you all so much for your kindness xx

A special welcome to you and Charlie! :)

It is so hard to watch your fur baby not feeling well. Charlie sounds like he is in good hands; so have faith you will get answers from all the tests.

You have come to the right place for help and advice. Once you have all the test results the experts will be able to help you better.

Take care!!! (((HUGS)))

such sad new to bring you. We went to the vets to get the test results and Charlie was much worse. Despite having IV fluids for 24 hours his kidneys were not responding, he was fading. We had lots of time to cuddle him and give him lots of love. Sadly Charlie went over the bridge very peacefully in my arms and the vet was wonderful, letting me stay with him for a while afterwards, and giving me a hug as I left. We made a difference to him I hope, giving him a loving home for his last 2 and a half years, caring for him and loving him. RIP Charlie, we'll miss you xx

Time to Go

The time has come I think you know
the Lord is calling so I must go
I love you so much; I wish it wasn't so
I wish I could stay; I don't want to go

You're the best family a dog ever had
so kind and gentle, never mean or mad
I'll never forget the day that we met
I was so lucky to become your pet

You opened your door and showed me your heart
I'll never forget you; we'll never part
You loved me and cared for me over the years
you taught me everything and took away my fears

The Lord is calling now I must go
but before I go I want you to know
I know it hurts to lose a friend
but I'll always be with you even to the end.

its taken me a while to find the strength to come back here and read your kind messages. I miss Charlie so much, and with every breath in my body. My heart is still breaking, but I know that even at the end he knew I was there for him and him alone, his love and mine together for always.

IMO the best way to get thru this is to get another dog. Dogs keep me together, make my life whole. I don't believe in suffering. If there is any way to make this painful time bareable I'm going to do it. Least i loose my mind as well! You're going to suffer no matter what but who says you have to suffer alone. What's wrong with a smile now and then at a furry face doing something silly. Reminds you of why you got into this in the first place.
