Hello
I'm new here and beginning the journey of Cushing's with my dog Sadie. A 6 yr old beagle. The question I have is, she starts her loading phase Monday. The vet wants to start her with 250 mg of lysondren twice a day(500mg a day)and 2.5 mg a day of prednison for seven days. Then 250mg of lysondren tue, thurs ,saturday. Then bring a urine sample in. The question I have is why the prednison. I thought it was for a emergency. I trust my vet but I question this and he said it was common to keep from having side affects. Thing is he gave us 60 pills.Thats 4 months worth.
This vet has been our vet for the past 20 plus years. I just want everything to go right for Sadie.

Hi and welcome to you and Sadie!

So sorry for the circumstances that brought you here but glad you found us.

Using prednisone with Lysodren during the loading phase is an old and outdated protocol. A vet/IMS that is knowledgeable about Cushing's and the medicine Lysodren will not do this. The reason is because the prednisone can mask the symptoms of a dog being loaded and this could turn into a life threatening situation where a dog could be thrown into an Addison's crisis.

Here is a link from our Resource Thread about Lysodren: Lysodren loading Instructions and related tips (http://www.k9cushings.com/forum/showthread.php?t=181)

I was wondering if you could get copies of all tests that were done on Sadie and post any abnormalities here. Also could you tell us how much she weighs? Any other health issues? Is she taking any other herbs/medicines/supplements? Sorry for all the questions but the more we know about sweet Sadie the better our feedback can be, ok?

Please know we will help in any way we can, so do not hesitate to ask any and all questions.

Love and hugs,
Lori
