My dog is a Basset Terrier mix of some sort he was diagnosed with Cushings a couple of weeks ago and started on Vetoryl now he is coughing a dry cough took him off the vetoryl, the coughing stopped then back on the coughing started again. The vet does not want to change his meds he says Vetoryl is he safest med. Has anyone else had this problem?
Could he have a URI? Heart problem? Should I get an Xray of his chest?

Hi and welcome to you and your sweet boy!

I haven't heard of coughing as an adverse reaction to Vetoryl/Trilostane. My non-cush dog, Bear, has a "goose honking" cough which is due to his trachea being collapsed and to mild heart disease.

Although I am not a vet, I believe the coughing should be investigated and a X-ray of his chest would be a really good start.

I was wondering if you could tell us more about your boy, such as his weight and the dose of Vetoryl he is taking. Could you get copies of all tests that were done on your boy and post any abnormalities here. The more information we know about your boy the better our feedback can be.

Is he taking any other supplements/medicines/herbs? Any other health issues?

Please know we will help in any way we can so do not hesitate to ask any and all questions.

Love and hugs,
Lori

I stand corrected: Additional adverse reactions were observed in 93 dogs. The most common of these included diarrhea (31 dogs), lethargy (30 dogs), inappetence/anorexia (27 dogs), vomiting (28 dogs), musculoskeletal signs (lameness, worsening of degenerative joint disease) (25 dogs), urinary tract infection (UTI)/hematuria (17 dogs), shaking/shivering (10 dogs), otitis externa (8 dogs), respiratory signs (coughing, congestion) (7 dogs), and skin/coat abnormality (seborrhea, pruritus)
(8 dogs).

hello, maybe we have same problem, coughing started 2 weeks after we start with vetoryl...now it is 4 months and panting in any activity is added... if i would like to give it a try to take her off the veoryl how long it will last to see if this will stop her coughing?
or maybe another option is put her on inhaler corticoids?

Hi and welcome to you and your pup (name?)! Lori has gotten you off to a good start with regard to providing us with test results, etc. I am curious how old your dog is. If you could, please tell us what symptoms prompted you or your vet to investigate Cushing's as a diagnosis.

I agree with Lori's recommendation to pursue a chest x-ray. I am a little bit surprised that your vet did not pursue this. Even if it turns out that Vetoryl is the cause of the coughing, it would be important to rule out other issues.

Looking forward to learning more about your pup!
