My Boston Terrier is 8 years old and we have been going to the vet for 3-4 weeks now and still we know nothing. She started out with a swallen vulva which they thougth she was in heat, but she is spayed. Then they thought that some tissue may have been left behind when spayed and is producing too much estrogen. In the mean time the vulva continues to swell and the tissue around the vulva also begins to swell and become hard to touch. They start her in antibiotics, prednisone and pain medicine. Nothing seems to work and she continues to become sicker and sicker. She looses weight, develops an increase in drinking water, loss of appetite. Does not want to jump up in the couch without help and abdomen becomes swallen. They do an ultrasound which shows slightly enlarged kidneys. We send blood work to Cornell to be tested for estrogen levels which come back at 19.7. At that time we then inject her with chorulon and then do a progesteron level which shows absolutely NOTHING!!!
Ugh.... I am at my wits end and do not know where to go from here. Can anyone help.........

Hi and welcome to you both!

I only have a moment to post and I was wondering if Ellie is exposed to any human topical hormonal creams/ointments?

Love and hugs,
Lori

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I can only imagine how frustrated you are and I hope Lori is onto something that might help solve the problem. Few vets know that human hormone replacement cream can be absorbed by pets and cause real problems, some of which point to cushing's. A swollen vulva in a spayed dog is a huge red flag, which is why Lori asked the question. Please take a look at the article below.

Hi and welcome from me too. I know you indicated she has been spayed, but has your vet mentioned anything about the condition Pyometra - a uterine infection? This can also occur in spayed dogs.
