Oh Terri,
I am so sorry Corky is now dealing with an UTI. Geez! But glad that it was conclusive for that and can be treated. This really stinks all around that merry go around you speak of-- I hope he recovers Real quick. If I may ask did you notice Corky drinking more than usual lately. considering I have learned that could be an indication of a uti, Im curious if Corky experienced this? As for Princess, her symptoms have not resolved one bit, not on the antibiotic or the di trial injections. What's going on here? Could it be high cortisol? Ughhhhhhhh. Best and warmest and loving regards to you and my boy and I hope he enjoys that nice big juicy steak tomorrow and you enjoy a nice stiff drink, I will most certainly join in that and it's gonna be triple stiff and on the rocks--haaaaaaaa:D

love you dearly. Xo Jeanette and Princess and Happy Memorial Day

Hi my very dear friend.

Our boy is at it again. :( Corky was drinking more water for several days, but it's been hot and the AC has been on. I didn't think too much about it at the time. He's had two doses of the Baytril, and didn't have any accidents in the house last night. He got up a few times during the night to go potty, but he was able to make it outside.

If Princess hasn't shown any improvement, it could very easily be her cortisol level. I really hope you get to the bottom of this soon.

I'm glad you're joining me for a good stiff drink. :D It's no fun to drink alone.

Corky and I love you and Princess bunches. Take care my friend.

You're very welcome my dear friend.

Corky had a rough night. He got really sick around 9:30. It was a long night. Needless to say, he didn't get his morning meds. He seems to be feeling better now, and he even ate.

I just got the rest of the results from Corky's tests. He is being taken off of the Baytril and now he has to take Ciprofloxacin. His UTI is a Pseudomonas bacterial infection which is resistant to many antibiotics. :( He has to take it for 21 days, and then he has to be retested in 4 weeks.

Oh Terri, I am sorry to hear about our little boy.

Does Cipro affect a dog's tummy as it does a human? I had it once and it killed my tummy. I am worried about Corkster's tummy.:o:o

Thank goodness you have such good vets!!!!

Sending love and huge hugs to both of you.

06-03-2011, 09:54 PM
Thank you Addy. I hope it doesn't upset his tummy. Anytime Corky's Trilo has been increased or he starts on new meds, I would give him Pepcid AC. In my research I found that antacids shouldn't be used with his new med. I have to ask his vet tomorrow. I'm so glad he works on Saturday.

I'll be thinking about you and my niece tomorrow.

Take care my dear friend.

Hi Terri,

So sorry to hear about the last test results. :( Bless your hearts. I hope he handles the Cipro ok and you can find something to help with the tummy after the Trilo.

Thank you so much Leslie. Corky can use all of the help that he can get.

His vet did say that I could give him his Pepcid AC while he's taking the Cipro. I'm going to talk to his IMS on Monday to see if I should cut back on his Trilo for awhile, until the UTI is under better control and his system adjusts to the Cipro.

You're thoughts, prayers, and healing white light are greatly appreciated.

Hi, Terry.

Sorry to hear that you and Corky are having a hard time. I hope the change in antibiotic is helping to get the UTI under control. These little ones just can't seem to catch a break!

Keeping you both in my thoughts and hoping things are on the upswing so you can relax some and enjoy the weekend.

06-11-2011, 09:59 PM
Thank you Sonja and Mary Beth.

The Cipro is helping Corky, but it's a real challenge trying to get 8 pills in him a day. The little stinker is wise to everything I wrap his pills in, and he spits them out. At least I can get two of them in him when he eats, as long as I hide them good enough for him to get them.

addy
06-13-2011, 09:15 AM
That is a lot of pills ,wow, I don't know how you get him to take them all. Zoe is still pretty good because her appetite is still huge, she'd eat the pill with nothing on it.:p:p:p Koko would be impossible.

My cat got so good at hiding pills in her mouth, we would pop them down her throat close her mouth, blow in her nose, rub her throat and she would swallow 3 times. I would pronounce "SUCCESS!" and she would jump off the bed and spit the darn pill out:rolleyes::rolleyes:

We would find pills under the bed:eek::eek:

These little ones sometimes really hate their medicine.

Hope my newphew is feeling better and you are too dear friend.

Love,
Addy

Hi Terri,

Is there any chance your vet could have some of those meds compounded and suspended in broth? That would be so much easier.

littleone1
06-13-2011, 12:54 PM
Hi Addy and Glynda,

The next time Corky has to take so many pills, I will ask his vet or IMS. Once the AB is finished, that will be 3 less pills Corky has to take. We have 17 days down and 14 to go.

You're nephew is doing better my dear friend. He starts a 4 A.M. and gets his last pill at 8 P.M. I have finally been successful in giving his meds to him the last two days. Corky's actually been taking his pills in cream cheese. I could never get him to take his pills in cream cheese before, but now he decided he likes it. Go figure!:confused: I'm hoping this will continue to work.

They are very smart. I watch Corky to make sure he gets his pills, only to find them later. I caught him several times when he would hold the pill in his cheek, and all of a sudden, it would be hanging out of the side of his mouth. The other day when I went to change his water, I thought there was a piece of plastic in his bowl, and couldn't figure out how it got there. When I took a good look at it, it was part of the capsule from his Trilo. I have no idea how much Trilo he actually got, and how much was actually in his water.

Squirt's Mom

Hi Terri,

Have you tried following the bite that has the pill in it by another bite immediately that has nothing in it? Sometimes when they know a second bite is coming they will gulp the first bite down quickly in order to get the second.

I always tried to mix up bites when I have so many pills to give. Some bites have meds and some don't. If they will take the bite with the pill and take the second "empty" bite, swallowing that second bite usually takes the pill down with it if they have tried to hold it in their mouth.

Give him bites of the cream cheese, or whatever you are using, from time to time just for fun, too. ;) It helped to see me eat a bite of cheese when giving pills, too. They always want anything I am eating! :p

Hugs,
Leslie and the gang

littleone1
06-13-2011, 02:04 PM
Hi Leslie,

I would always give Corky a few bites first, give him the one with the pill in it, and then give him a few more bites. I've used sliced ham, honey ham, turkey, chicken, pieces of hot dogs, and now cream cheese. I wouldn't give him the same meat everytime during the day. I would vary it. Corky won't eat other cheese anymore. Sweet potatoes don't work either. For ten years, I would be able to give him his Soloxine with a little mayo, and now he doesn't want that either. He's taken so many meds in his lifetime, that I'm sure he is so tired of taking them.

Squirt's Mom
06-13-2011, 02:11 PM
That's tough. :( For a while, Squirt got that way but I think having more than one pup wanting bites helped her as much as anything. She did start refusing Am. cheese which is what I had always used and still won't eat a bite without checking it out but the two-bite trick works with everything else with her. All the meds she is on now I can put in her food with no problem so that helps a lot!

Now Crys, another story! I made the mistake of putting an antibiotic in her food one time and she didn't want to eat after that. :( She didn't trust her food bowl for a while. I changed the bowl and moved her spot a little bit and that fixed it for her. Once she tasted the AB in the treat, she became difficult to pill often times.

They make a pill shooter that some folks have had luck with but I never tried it.

Wish I had another suggestion for you but that is the extent of my offerings....I think. :p

Hugs,
Leslie and the girls

I appreciate your help. Hopefully when Corky gets retested for his UTI, it will be cleared up and he will be off of the AB.

When I was giving Corky an AB with his food, I would put a little creamed chipped beef on top of it, and he would usually eat that . I mostly did this with Baytril, as the pills were so big, and I would break them into quarters.

Hopefully the cream cheese will continue to work.

Hi Terri,

Hope things have settled down at your house. How are you and Corky doing?

We are fine and will have a hot day tomorrow, in the 90's they are saying, but just for one day.

Those darn leaks, unexpected house problems are always so upsetting AND expensive:rolleyes::mad:

Thanks for checking on us Addy.

Things won't be settled down for awhile. I'm waiting for the estimate to be sent to the insurance company by the people they sent out. I'm having a different restoration company do the work, as they are more reliable. I picked out the flooring yesterday. Once the insurance company gives the okay, the house will be torn apart more, as the flooring in 3 rooms and the wallpaper in 2 rooms has to be removed.

Corky finally finished his antibiotic yesterday. I'm not sure that the UTI is totally gone, as he has been dribbling at times during our morning walks. He has to have a urine culture done next week. I also have to take him in for an early stim, as he has started drinking alot more water and is looking for more food. I can't have it done until he's been off the AB for 7-10 days.

Corky's sending his aunt and cousins lots of kisses. Give Zoe and Koko lots of belliy rubs from their aunt.

On a less happy note, I had to take Corky in to get an early stim test. His cortisol level went up from 4 to 8.2 on his post stim. He will be staying on TID, with 24mg 3x a day, for a total of 72mg. His BUN and his BUN/Creatinine Ratio went up from 45 to 72, with a reference range of 6-31 for the BUN and 4-27 for the BUN/Creatinine Ratio. We're going to try giving him his Pepcid AC every day, just in case there was a GI upset. He also had to have a complete urinary evaluation done today. :(:(:(:(

Hi Terry,

Many things can effect BUN from diet to stress so don't fret over much about that just yet. It is the creatinine that really matters; the BUN can sometimes be lowered, which will lower that ratio that gets so scary.

Do let us know what the vet says today and know you have many hugs flying your way.

Hi everyone,

I just got Corky's test results. They are not good. He is still loaded with the same infection. Since the Cipro didn't clear it up, Corky is now going to be taking Marbofloxacin (Zeniquin). Dr. R. is going to talk to Dr. H. about having an U/S done on Corky's urigenital system - urinary bladder, kidneys, prostrate, and liver, since Corky does have a mass on his liver. He feels there might be something else going on with Corky since the infection is not clearing up. :(:(:(

Hi Terri,

I am sorry to hear about Corky. I hope its nothing more than a stubborn UTI that needs a stronger antibiotic.

I have been following your thread very closely since our babies have adrenal tumors. I wanted to let you know because of reading Corky's journey through this disease and how well he was doing on trilostane is what gave me the strength I needed to start treatment with Logan with Trilostane. I wasn't going to put Logan through surgery because of the risks and I was told much higher doses of LYsodren would be needed due to his adrenal tumors. Many thanks to you and Corky.

Glad to hear his new dosage is working for him. Hope he feels better soon.

Hi everyone,

I apologize for not being active on the forum recently. I just have too much going on.

I was able to get Corky in for his U/S this morning. His adrenal tumor has definitely increased in size. It's now 4.4cm x 2.2cm. He has mineralization in his kidneys. She also did another urine culture and MIC while he's still on the AB, in order to see if it's helping his UTI. If it isn't, she said we might have to increase his dosage, and that there's a possibility that Corky might have to be on antibiotics for quite awhile. He's also been losing weight. He's down to 17.5 pounds.

Hopefully, all of the repairs will be completed on Friday, and then it's just a matter of housecleaning 6 rooms all over again, as there are other rooms affected by the dust.

Thank you for your understanding, love, hugs, and prayers.

I got the results from Corky's tests , and they were negative. This AB is helping him. His IMS wants to keep him on it for another two weeks. :( It's become a real struggle getting him to take his meds.

On a brighter note, all of the repairs are done, but I'm in the process of cleaning up a big mess. I'm getting there slowly, but surely.

I finally got some good news about Corky. His UTI is finally gone. :D He has to go back in a month for another urine culture, to make sure it didn't return. This will work, as he'll also have his stim test and his blood chemistry panel done at the same time.

I'm really thinking about changing his dosing from TID to BID, as it's really getting to be a struggle getting him to take his meds. He's been on so much recently. BID will be easier on the both of us.

Hi Terri,

So happy to hear that nasty, stubborn infection is cleared up at last! :D:D I hope it doesn't come back!

With fewer pills to take, maybe he will accept the Trilo TID without as much fuss. Was the infection present when you decided to go to 3x/day? Maybe that was what was causing the problems when the TID dosing was given? If so, then going back to 2x/day should be fine. I don't remember - was the total amount of Trilo increased with the TID dosing? If so, will you keep the increased amount if you go to BID? Just pondering here, ya see...;)

Thanks Addy, Mary Beth, and Leslie.

Corky's been on TID since the end of January, Leslie. His dosage was increased 3 times since he's been on TID. We went from 40mg total BID to 51mg, to 60mg, and now 72mg total TID. He didn't get the UTI until Memorial Day weekend. He started on ABs the Sat. before Memorial Day. If I do go back to BID, the dosage per day would be lowered, as he'll be getting more mg at one time.

We tried Corky on BID with the same dosage, with 48mg in the A.M., and 24mg in the P.M., but he couldn't handle the higher dosage in the morning. After the second day he couldn't keep his food down. I skipped his dosage last night. I'm keeping him on TID until I talk to his IMS on Monday.

Please, there's no need to respond to Corky's thread, as there are so many others that really need your help. I will keep everyone posted when Corky has all of his tests done.

Thank you my very dear friends and Lil sis for all of your thoughts and prayers. You made me laugh Leslie. :D

I just spoke with Corky's IMS. She wants him to stay on the 72mg daily. In spite of what all of the recommendations say, I am suppose to split the capsules and try him on 36mg to be given BID. I do have chicken flavored capsules that I can use. I'm suppose to let her know how Corky does on this after a few days. If he is okay with it, then we'll order new capsules. Corky's saga continues. He now has Alprazolam to take when we have storms. This is the generic form of Xanax, as the Melatonin is no longer helping him. :(

kapohotricia
08-22-2011, 06:23 PM
Let's hope this BID regimen does the trick. How do you split Corky's dose? Our compounding pharmacist sold me a bottle of compounding solution and a couple of syringes with a lurlok connector so I can easily compound Kirby's dose as it changes. It saves a lot of money as I don't have to order new capsules.

Aloha,
Tricia and Kirby

08-22-2011, 06:44 PM
Hi Tricia,

I tried a few by opening the capsule and poured almost half of the capsule into the chicken flavored capsules I have, along with a whole capsule. A little of it didn't quite make it. I can tell this isn't going to work. I still have 11mg capsules, and I think I might just give Corky 35mg BID, instead of the 36mg BID. I'll see how it works for a few days, as it will only be 2 mg less a day.

Hi Addy,

Thanks for checking on Corky and me. I haven't been doing anything on the forum lately, as it's difficult for me to read because of my eyes.

Our Corkster is exhibiting strange behaviors again. He's going back on the SAM-e. He's been having accidents in the house. His poops have no form. The fecal stain didn't show any parasites, so now he is taking Metronidazole. I'm still waiting for the results from his urine culture.

i got the results of his blood work today. His post stim was 3.8 which is down from 8.2 two months ago. He's been doing pretty good since we went back to BID. We're going to continue that for now, and his dosage will continue to be 72mg a day. The only tests results that were high were the BUN and BUN/Creatinine Ratio. They went up to 77, with the high end of the ref. range being 31 and 27.

The remaining clean-up has been put on hold, as I've been battling a bad sinus infection.

I hope all is going well with you and Zoe.

We love you, too.

Sorry to hear you are both under the weather. I have a bad sinus infection too and believe it or not a low dose of prednisone is actually helping. I feel much better after feeling awful for weeks.

Hope the metronidazole helps but I wonder if the Slippery Elm would work for you? I have been cutting Zoe's metronidazole back and am considering the slippery elm for her. The only problem is you have to give it at least 2 hours after any other meds as it can affect how the body absorbs other drugs.

I know you have your hands full. Sending love and hugs and belly rubs.

Update on Corky:

Corky is in the hospital. Early this afternoon he started trembling and wouldn't eat anything. I took him to his IMS. She did an U/S, blood work, and took him off all of his meds. When we got home, he started losing control in his right hind leg, and he became very disoriented. He settled down and slept for two hours. When he woke up, he was worse. I took him to the emergency clinic, and they said it could be due to a few different things. Right now, he is resting peacefully, but I am extremely worried about him.

Thank you everyone. Your love and support mean so much to me.

I spoke with Corky's IMS. She is keeping Corky in the hospital today so he can be monitored and evaluated. His blood test results came back, and they were good.

Dr. H. said that I can take Corky to a neurologist, but she doesn't think that is the issue. She thinks it's a strong possibility that his adrenal tumor is now affecting his brain, and we might have to consider his quality of life. We'll see what happens today.

Thank you everyone for your love, hugs, thoughts, prayers, and support.

Corky isn't coming home tonight. He's been vomiting and has diarrhea. They are giving meds through and IV to help settle his stomach down. His stomach is now mushy. He will be getting fluids through the IV so he doesn't get dehydrated. He will also be getting some nutrients. They want to monitor him carefully. They also want to watch for a possible seizure.

I'm glad Corky's thread helped you Judi. You're welcome.

For those of you that sent me PMs, I'll check them later. I'm going to go visit Corky for a little while.

Thank you Tricia and Cindy.

I just checked on Corky, again. His BP has dropped from 160 yesterday afternoon to 110 tonight. His temp is below the normal range. They have heating packs in with him now, and his temp is slowly rising. They said this is probably due to his not eating anything for almost 48 hours.

I hope Kirby's doing better, Tricia. I know Corky wants to send Boston lickies back to both of you.

I actually slept for 3 hours, off and on, Cindy.

Super big hugs for all of you.

Corky is not doing well. Whatever happened that day changed so many things. His blood work was good. Dr. H. did another blood work-up last night. Many things changed in a day. Corky is going into kidney failure. His Creatinine went up to 4.9 after being normal the day before. The bruising is worse. His blood counts are low, and he is now anemic.

Corky and Jay have been reunited. They loved each other very much.

My dear Terri,

That is the first thing that I thought about yesterday -- that Jay was right there waiting for Corky with open arms. And also how proud Jay would be of you for EVERYTHING that you have done for Corky during these past years. You have truly done what was best for Corky, always, up to his final breath in this world.

Knowing of the bond that you and Jay and Corky shared, I can only imagine how deep your pain is over the loss of your little boy. And how lonely and hard it is to wake up this morning without him physically beside you. I hope you will feel the spirit and energy of all your k9cushings family, because we are right there with you each moment of the day. And most importantly of all, I trust and believe that the spirits of Jay and Corky will remain constantly and truly in your heart. Watching over you and protecting you until that day in the future when you are all three rejoined once again.

Sending many hugs from across the miles, this morning and each morning to come.

May you know that absence is full
Of tender presence and that
Nothing is ever lost or forgotten.

May the absences in your life be full of eternal echo.
May you sense around you the secret
Elsewhere which holds the presences
That have left your life.

May you be generous in your embrace of loss.
May the sore of your grief turn into a well
Of seamless presence.

May your compassion reach out to the ones
We never hear from and may you have
The courage to speak out for the excluded ones.

May you become the gracious
And passionate subject of your own life.
May you not disrespect your mystery
Through brittle words or false belonging.

May you be embraced by God in whom
Dawn and twilight are one and may
Your longing inhabit its deepest dreams
Within the shelter of the Great Belonging.
