Hi Jeanette,

Corky is taking his Trilo with the the meatloaf I give him, and then he does proceed to eat his meal right after that. His Trilo is not being put in his food anymore. He gets the Trilo before he eats.

He's been doing really good about not spitting his capsule out. It's been 4 days now. I think that I might have finally found a resolution to this situation.

The Corkster is very strong-willed! He can be stubborn at times, but he is a precious little boy.

Thank you for thinking about us.

We're sending more hugs and kisses your way.

Hi Terri, well then meatloaf it is as it seems.....that is just hilarious! the depths we go through for these precious pups, all worth it. And yes, they can all be stubborn at times, but we love them dearly. Big hugs for you and lots of delicious chocolate licks from the Princess. xo Jeanette

Hi Jeanette,

The Corkster has continued to take his Trilo with meatloaf. It's been six days now, and no spitting his capsule out..:D It's about time.:D

I know we go through so much with our babies because we do love them so much.

I hope you get good test results tomorrow. I'll be thinking about both of you.

Corky and I send you and Princess extra big hugs and kisses from Corky.

Hi,

I wanted to let you know that I spoke with Dr. Allen this afternoon. He told me that they believe in starting on the lower dosage of Trilo, and then to adjust the dosage as needed. He also felt that Corky's results and signs were good. He also said I could give him a call anytime if I had any questions.

He's not sure why the misunderstanding of the presentation occurred.

Thanks to your links, I have found very valuable resources with
Dr. Oliver and Dr. Allen.

Hopefully this will help clarify my previous post.

PS:
Corky had a special steak dinner tonight, as he has been so good about taking his Trilo and putting up with me.:D

Hi everyone,

The Corkster is not a happy camper with me today. :( He had to go to the vet's to have his T4 done and his teeth examined. He has 2 fractured teeth which have to be removed. :( Due to the holidays, he will have this done on January 4th.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any problems he might have from being put under with Cushings? His vet did reassure me that he shouldn't have any problems with what he uses. He is going to be using Sevoflurane, Proprofall, Hydromorphone, Valium, Doxirobe Gel, Oravet Barrier Sealant, and an antibiotic to be use after the surgery. They were going to give him Clavamox, but since Corky had a seizure the last time he was on Clavamox, they will give him a different antibiotic. I don't know what it will, yet. They will be monitoring all of his vital signs.

His vet also said that I could give him his Trilo with a very small amount of food, like one tiny piece, in the morning.

I would really appreciate any input you might have. Thank you so much.

Hi Terri,

Sorry Corky is going to have this dental work done but he will feel better after it's over. ;)

Squirt has been under twice since diagnosis - once right after to have a dental and again about 6 mos. later to remove that tumor on her spleen. Both times she did just fine, tho after the tumor surgery she did some coughing from irritation caused by the tube in her throat during the operation.

I will keep The Corkster in my prayers!

Hi Leslie,

Thank you, and thank you for your prayers. I know I worry. This is a new twist since Corky is dealing with Cushings.

On a brighter note, his vet feels that his BUN was elevated due to flare-ups with his teeth. He feels that he could have been experiencing more pain. The Corkster doesn't let me know when he's in pain. I think he "just grins and bears it". He doesn't whimper or cry out. He has a very high tolerance for pain.

Kira just had surgery to remove warts from all her paws a couple of weeks ago. She was really out of it the night of the surgery, but has rallied wonderfully since then. It was 3 weeks ago yesterday and she's her happy self again. There were no problems putting her under. She had some of the same things that you listed. The evening after the surgery, she was like a drunk and she couldn't stand. But that might be due to the fact that she had all 4 paws worked on. Within 12 hours though, she was walking up and down the stairs again. When she came home, she was ravenously hungry and thirsty, but the vet said to give her very little food (she didn't get her trilostane at all that day) and small sips of water about 15 min apart. That was the hardest; seeing her hungry and thirsty and having to withhold food and water. But, we both survived.

Hi Heidi,

Thank you for this information. I feel better knowing that Kira had some of the same things that Corky will have and that she really did good.

That would be hard to see her not being able to eat anything or to drink very little water.

The last time Corky had surgery, he was able to eat in the late afternoon. I'm not sure what his vet will tell me to do this time. I don't know if there will be a difference now that he has Cushings.

Hi Terri,

Our poor seniors and their teeth! :( Well, it is best to get them bad teeth out even if they don't seem to cause any discomfort, at least that's what I'm telling Harley...shhh!

As far as the Proprofall, I found this post from Sharon, she's a nurse, she posted it to Susy. Am I posting you the right info?

Susy
Propofol ( diprivan) we use all the time in the unit. It is a sedative and works wonderfuly, Its half life is very short. Once turned off within a few minutes the pts start to wake up. Good luck with the biopsy. Any surgical procedures are tough on our cush dogs but they get through it, and probably better than we do:p. You may want to find out about giving pred or W/H lysodren before surg as I am sure Wylie will get stressed some, as well as after due to the pain. You sure dont want him sick due to low cortisol.
Hugs from me and mine

Hope this helps.

Will be keeping you and Corky in my thoughts and prayers.

I really don't think that having Cushings will affect how he reacts to the surgery. Kira couldn't get her A.M. pill because she wasn't allowed to have water after 8am on the morning of her surgery. Because she was only allowed a few 'hand fed' morsels of food when she got home that evening I decided to NOT give her her evening dosage of trilo. The vet said it would be OK, but I don't want to give her the meds without food in her stomach. I didn't see any negative affects for not having her meds 1 day. Though she was drinking alot, I believe that was because she hadn't had anything to drink since 5am the morning of the surgery. She was on IV for most of the day, but it's still not the same as having a bowl of water.

I'm sure the Corkster will do just fine.

Heidi

Terri,

Shiloh has had three fairly significant surgeries in the past 3.5 years, one of which was her adrenalectomy. All were performed by the same great board certified surgeon. I was instructed not to give her any food whatsoever after midnight the day prior to her surgery. To be extra safe, I didn't give her anything after about 9:00 pm. No way I was going to give Shi anything that could possibly do her any harm during surgery.

Sorry I didn't answer your question a while back about how she's doing. Shiloh is doing very well. We're in California catching some good sized winter surf. She still guards my car when I'm surfing....although she sometimes catches some Z's while on the job.

I'm sorry Corky needs to have the dental work done but it's going to make him feel so much better. It's natural to worry a bit any time they use anesthesia but the risks are extremely minimal. It will be nice to have it behind you.

Hi Lori,

Thank you for this information. I didn't know what some of the things were that Corky would be getting. I never use to ask questions before when had had his surgeries, but now I do. He's always done very well in the past, but things have now changed. I'm sure he'll do fine.

I promise I won't tell Harley anything different about his teeth. Mums the word!:D

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. They are really appreciated.

I hope Harley's trip to the vet goes well. Hopefully he just has to have his teeth cleaned.

Hi Ken,

It's good to hear from you. I'm glad that Shi is doing good. I hope you're really enjoying your surfing. Shi deserves to catch a few zzz's while on guard duty!:)

The more I think about it, the more I think that I won't give him his Trilo that morning. In the past, Corky wasn't allowed to eat anything after midnight, but he was allowed to have water until 5 A.M. Corky usually doesn't drink any water until he eats his morning meal, so I don't have to worry about him drinking any water.

I know Corky will feel better after having the two teeth removed. I knew there was a problem, but Corky never let's on that he's having any pain. There were signs that I had been noticing recently, but ever since Corky had masticatory muscle myositis, he won't let me open his mouth. I'm glad that that the vet found the problem.

Take care. I hope to hear from you soon.

I am praying it will go very smoothly for both of you so he can get back to his mommy's meatloaf real soon....haaaaaa.....Thinking of you both and a quick procedure. Luv you both...xo Jeanette

Good morning Jeanette,

Even though I knew there were issues with at least one tooth, I didn't know that he had two fractured teeth that would have to be extracted until yesterday morning. Because of the holidays, this won't be done until January 4th. That way his vet will be available if there would be any problems with the extractions.

Thank you for your prayers. I'm sure The Corkster will be okay. He's had so much surgery in the past and has really done well I was more concerned about this one because of the Cushings.

I gave him a special dinner last night. For some reason, when he goes to his vet, he constantly shakes and pants from the time we walk in the door. As soon as he gets out of the car, he keeps trying to pull in the opposite direction from the door. He doesn't do this when he goes to his IMS. It's probably because of everything that he has been through when he's gone to the vet.

I hope Princess is continuing to do well.

Hugs and kisses to all of you. I will talk to you soon.

I got Corky's T4 test results today. His level is 1.3, with a reference range of .9-3.9 ug/dl. But since he's been taking Soloxine, his vet feels that Corky's result is a little low. It probably should be around 2.4. He has a call in to Corky's IMS to discuss the possibility of increasing Corky's dosage. When he first started taking Soloxine in 2003, he was taking 0.1 mg twice daily. After 4 months, his dosage was then changed to 1/2 of that daily.

Could his thyroid level be lower due to the Trilostane?

Thanks,

Terri

His Soloxine has now been increased to double the amount he was taking daily. It's been almost six years since he's been on this dosage. Unfortunately, due to the holidays, neither his vet or IMS are in the office, so my unanswered questions will remain unanswered until Monday.

The Corkster is home and is so glad to be home.:)

He had three teeth extracted and two masses. One of the masses had a strange color and texture, and a biopsy has to be done on it.:(

He has stitches in three places. He has to take Tramadol for pain and Clindamycin as his antibiotic.

They also found that he has infections in both of his ears. They are both bacteria and yeast. He now also has to have Otomax put in his ears for 14 days.

He drank a little water and is now sleeping.

I feel so sorry for this poor little guy.

Harley PoMMom
01-04-2010, 04:02 PM
Hi Terri,

OMGosh, the poor Corkster!!:( The tramadol really helped Harley, he acted like he was in no pain at all. When Harley did come home he drank alot of water, they did tell me to try to limit his water intake but my reply was "He's got cushings and if he wants water, he gets water", but I didn't let him gulp it down. That's what they are worried about, the pup gulping so much water at one sitting and then vomiting it back up.

Ear infections...hmmm...I wonder if this is bc of his thyroid acting up?? I know you said in an earlier post that you waiting to hear from your IMS about adjusting his thyroid meds.

UGH...waiting for a biopsy report to come back...We are anxiously waiting here with you and sending positive thoughts for a good and normal report.

Give Corky some special belly rubs from Harley and me, and sending tons of healing and soothing thoughts and prayers your way for the Corkster, and his mom, of course! :)

Love and hugs,
Lori

01-04-2010, 04:32 PM
Thank you so very much, Lori.

Corky is drinking more water now, but so far he's not vomiting. I know his vet was also concerned about that. As long as he keeps the water down, then I will be able to feed him, but only about half of what he normally eats for one meal.

Corky probably won't be on pain meds too long, as he has usually done very good after his surgeries. Normally, I've had to give him meds for pain for one to two days.

I think his ear infections are due to his thyroid level being low. Last January, his level was 2.8, and now it's 1.3. Before he was taking Soloxine, Corky use to get ear infections all of the time. These are the first ones he's had in years. He is now taking double the dose of Soloxine. He has to go back for another T4 in 3 weeks.

I know I will be very anxious to get the results of his biopsy. Dr. R was concerned about this mass, especially with everything that is going on with Corky.

Can you tell that I'm just a tad upset by the way I'm rambling on?

Corky loves his belly rubs.

Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers for both of us, and thank you for being such a dear friend.

Hi Ken,

It's so good to hear from you.

Thank you so much for your positive thoughts and prayers. I'm trying to think positive thoughts that the mass is nothing to worry about. He had three previous masses removed from his mouth, biopsies were done, and everything was O.K., but this one was different. Otomax has worked for him before, and the type of infections he has should respond to the Otomax.

The Corkster did go through so much today. He's really had a bad year. Bless his heart, he never gives up.

Corky enjoyed his gentle hugs and kisses. Please give Shi a big hug from me and kisses from Corky.

Hi Jeanette,

I feel better now. Corky ate and kept everything down. He was looking for more food. After about an hour after he ate, since it wasn't his normal portion, I gave him just a little more to eat. I was able to get his antibiotic in him, since he has to have it with food.

I so much appreciate the positive thoughts and wishes along with the tight hugs. The Corkster loves the extra wet licks.

We love you, too. Thank you for being a dear friend.

Extra hugs for you and Princess, and kisses from The Corkster.

Thank you so much for your positive thoughts on Corky's mass. Also, thank you for helping me with the information you gave me.

Corky is doing very good right now. I'm also thinking positive thoughts that everything will be O.K. when the test results come back.

Terri,

it was good waking up to the positive news of Corky eating and feeling well :) But I was sorry to read about the mass they took out and was sent of to be examined. Like everyone else, we will keep paws and fingers crossed for a good outcome and that waiting won't be too long...

Give Corky a hug from us,

Thank you Saskia,

Corky is still doing good. He was up a few times during the night. I thought he had to go potty, but he just wanted to look outside. I'm sure he just wanted to make sure he was home.

Along your fingers and Yunah's paws crossed, I too have everything crossed that the mass is nothing to worry about. Hopefully I will get the results back from the lab today.

Hi John,

Thank you for your positive thoughts and crossed fingers and paws. I really appreciate it.

The Corkster is really doing good. He went for a walk this morning, but I didn't let him walk as far as he normally walks. I told him that he could only take a short walk this morning. When he got home, he ate his normal meal and actually took all of his meds. He had to take six this morning. I gave him the ones that he didn't have to have with food before his walk. The rest he took when he was eating.

I am waiting anxiously for the results of the biopsy. Corky's had masses removed before, but for some reason this one worries me. Hopefully it's just in my imagination.

Hi Terri,

Still have a few nails left today but it's getting increasingly harder to type with my eyes crossed for Corky. :p

Try not to let the "what ifs" drive you batty as you wait. Easy to say, huh? But I know what you are going through and you're not alone. Waiting on the path report on Squirt's splenic tumor was nerve-wracking to say the least and my poor little mind just went bonkers with the waiting - creating monsters out of dust! But her's turned out good and I am holding to the faith that Corky's will as well!

Hugs,

You just brought a smile to my face, Leslie.:) Please don't bite any more nails!:D Don't keep your eyes crossed too long, as we don't want them to stay that way.:):D

I think that I just worry too much at times. I was just so concerned because two vets looked at the mass and were concerned about it. I'm sure that the results will be good, as I also have everything crossed.

I really don't know what I would do without the support of everyone.

Thank you so very much. Extra hugs for you and the girls. You are all very special. The Corkster is sending kisses to all of you.

Hi Terri,

prior to going to bed, I had to come and check to see if maybe, just maybe you already received the results. Well, I guess that would have been a bit too much to have asked for, heh? :) But that's okay, Yunah and I are experts at sleeping while managing to keep our paws and fingers crossed :p So that's what we will do...and maybe, when we wake up tomorrow (and got rid of the paw and finger cramps first :D ) we will come and check again, there will be some encouraging news :)

Hugs to you and Corky,

Hi Saskia,

Thank you so much for checking on us. You and Yunah are so very special. I know when Corky has any blood work done, I always get the results the next day, but for some reason, it does take longer to get the results of a biopsy.

Now I'm going to start to worry about both of you. Please don't let your fingers and Yunah's paws get too cramped up.:) Thank you for bringing another smile to my face. I hope the results are back tomorrow.

I hope you get a good night's sleep.

Hi to all,

I spoke with my vet's office and someone from IDEXX. Depending on the kind of mass that has to be tested, it could take several days to get the results back. IDEXX did give me this information, but they weren't allowed to give me any other info.

Please uncross your fingers, paws, eyes, and no more nail biting.:D
I know I'm sore from sitting on pins and needles.:D I needed to bring some levity to this situation.

On a more positive note, I spoke with Dr. Dodds today concerning Corky's low thyroid level. She felt that his dosage had been too low, especially with him having Cushings, and for his weight. This was probably the reason why he was shakng and trembling in the mornings. I know I didn't mention this before. Since his Soloxine has been increased, he hasn't been shaking or trembling. I feel good about this. She is such a very nice person.

Hi Louise,

Thank you for the positive thoughts, hugs and healing pets for the Corkster. Corky has been through so much in a year. He is such a little trooper. He's still doing good. He ate all of his dinner last night, and he even ate a treat.

The increased dosage of Soloxine has helped him. I'm also really hoping that when the lab results come back everything will be normal.

I'm sorry to hear that you were ill. I hope you're feeling much better.

This is so very sweet of both of you.:) I'm glad you both slept good with fingers and paws crossed.:D

I'm going to call Corky's vet this morning and ask him to give IDEXX a call to see if he can get any information about Corky's test results. When I spoke with the gentleman at IDEXX, he told me that I should do this as they would be able to give my vet information that they weren't allowed to give me.

Since Corky is doing so good right now, I'm sure we'll have a good day.:) The one thing I do need is to get more sleep!

Hi Lori,

Thank you so much for checking on us. Corky seemed to have a little pain this afternoon when I gave him his dinner. I know he was hungry, but he took a couple of bites and jumped up on the couch. I mashed up some of his ground turkey burger, as it was very soft, and then he ate it and was looking for more, which I did give him.

Corky seemed to be a little bit on the insecure side all day, as he really needed to be super close to me. I know he doesn't understand what happened to him, plus he's now taking ten pills a day in addition to the ear flush and Otomax twice a day. He finally fell asleep about 8:30. He just woke up to go potty and fell right back to sleep.

I know I really hate this waiting, but there's nothing much I can do about it. When I called the vet this afternoon, he also told me that the amount of time it takes to get the test results does depend on the kind of mass it is.

Here I go again! I just can't help worrying. I hope it is nothing to worry about and that I'm just a doting mom!:)

On a side note, were you knocked off of the connection with this site? I was for for a little while.

Perfectly understandable Terri.

We all want our babies to be healthy. The 2 vets being concerned about Corky's mass is great (IMO). Would you rather be told "Hmmm, I'd like to get this checked out, just to be sure" or "It's probably nothing to worry about, we can check it again in another 6 months if you're still worried by it."

Personally I'd want it checked out. You know what you're dealing with, and if it is something, you and the docs can figure out how to make Corky better. And if/when it turns out to be normal and harmless, well you've earned that drink.:)

Here's a little story... I got a skin cancer check a few years ago. The doc said "Hmmm. That spot doesn't look good. I'd like to remove it and send it off for analysis" so there's me thinking I'm gonna die :( and the results came back as nothing to worry about. It was a freckle on top of another freckle. :o

We all know that you're not going to relax until the result comes in, regardless of what we say, so until then we'll just worry right along side you, cross everything, and be here for you hoping for great news.

Hi everyone.

I got a call from Dr. R. this morning.

Corky's biopsy report is in. There are no cancerous cells.:D The reason for the strange texture and color of the one mass was due to gum dysplasia and gum disease associated with the two fractured teeth that were next to it.

Just an FYI.

I just got Corky's thyroid test results. His T4 was 2.3ug/dl which is up from 1.3 in December. It's now just about where it should be - 2.4. His Free T4 was 3.2 with a reference range of .7-2.5ug/dl. Since he is being treated for hypothyroidism, his slightly elevated score was to be expected. His vet feels that his levels are good. He will now be continuing to take 1 pill twice a day.

Hi Everyone,

Corky has continued on his up and down roller coaster ride. I didn't want to post anything until I spoke with his IMS. Corky has been super hyper. He's been eating more, but is losing weight. She wants do do another U/S on his right adrenal gland and do his stim test and blood work earlier than his scheduled appointment. He is going to have this done on Friday.

I see he is - could be that the dose is too high. I think you need to talk to the IMS as soon as you can.

You couldn't have possibly given him two doses by accident?

Hi Alison,

Corky's thyroid meds were recently increased because his thyroid level was low. He had a T4 and FT4 done again on Jan. 25th. His levels were just about normal. When I previously spoke with Dr. Dodds in Dec., she also felt that his dosage was too low for his weight and having Cushings. I tried to call her today, but she is out of the country and won't be back until Thursday.

I don't know much about thyroid issues but others do so this info will probably be more useful to them than to me.

Here's a link with some thyroid info:

This is what it says about thyroid med od:

Usually levothyroxine has minimal side effects but it can cause signs associated with hyperthyroidism, such as increased appetite, rapid heart rates, increased activity levels, nervousness and fever if it is overdosed.

Hi Terri,

I am glad you are taking Corky to see his IMS on Friday and hopefully she will get you the answers you need.

Altho Dr Dodds is known as the guru of canine thyroid disease, and I believe this to be true too, only YOU know Corky best. Every pup is different and reacts differently when given the same exact meds. So maybe the increase in his thyroid meds was just a tad to much...you and his IMS will get this straighten out, I am positive of that.

You are doing a wonderful job of taking care of Corky, you are such a pro-active mom!

Love and hugs,

Hi Lori,

Thank you so much. I really try. I think I'm going to cut back on his thyroid meds to his previous dose that he was taking for so many years. It will only be for three days. I know that anytime he's had to fast or have surgery, I was always told by everyone that missing a dose for one day wouldn't hurt him. Even when he was hospitalized he didn't get his meds.

I was just reading through the posts. I finally have a good internet connection. I have a little container where I put all of Corky's meds for the day. I keep track of everything I give him.

Hi Scott,

Thank you. That's exactly what I did. Since he had the whole pill yesterday morning, I didn't give him the second pill. This morning I gave him his previous dosage. He is much calmer. He's even sleeping now. He also didn't eat as much this morning. I really feel that the stronger dose is too much for him. I didn't realize it before, but looking back at his results from the previous year, his T4 had also been on the low side. His meds weren't increased then because that's when he was originally diagnosed with Cushings and wasn't on any treatment for it.

Corky will be seeing his IMS on Friday. I'm going to discuss this with her, as both she and my vet made the decision to increase his dosage.

It would also be helpful to see the TSH which is frequently done in conjuction with the T4. Thyroid levels vary from pup to pup and a low normal level in presence of a normal TSH is usually not treated the same as a low normal level with an elevated TSH.

Hi Terri,
I just logged on and read your posts on Corky. I think I would have done the same as you and not give him the higher dose just to be on the safe side. I really do hope you can settle the issue on Friday. BTW, I tried calling Dr. Dodd's and also got the voicemail msg. stating she is out of the country. I hope you get to speak with her this week if possible in conjunction with your IMS appt. Please let me/us know what transpires. In the meantime, hope he will be feeling a little better. Hi Lori,

Thank you so much for thinking about us. This is so very sweet of you.

I have my long list of questions prepared. One thing I have on my list is to find out whether or not Corky would be able to alternate his Soloxine dosage. When he was on the lower dosage, that's when he was trembling and shaking. Then when he was on the increased dosage, he was having the other issues. Hopefully we'll be able to reach a happy medium. Since he's going to be having the U/S done on his right adrenal gland, I also want it done on his liver.

I'll definitely let you know anything I find out tomorrow.

I hope Harley is doing well. Hugs and belly rubs for him.

Hi Everyone,

We finally got home. Corky is going to be staying on half a pill of Soloxine twice a day. His IMS doesn't feel that we need to do the TSH on Corky.

On a lower note, the U/S on his kidney showed that the liver was okay, but the size of the mass on his liver grew 1 cm each way since last February. It is starting to invade some of the blood vessels. His right adrenal gland is now 1.9cm x 3cm and there is some invasion of the aorta (vena cava).

When I get the results of his stim test and his blood work, I will post the results.

Squirt's Mom
02-05-2010, 06:42 PM
Hi Terri,

I know you are disappointed in the U/S results. :( I wish they had been more positive, too. Did they give you any suggestions for where to go from here? Any changes in meds or anything?

Hi Leslie,

At the present time, the only change in Corky's meds is that he is going back to his previous dosage of Soloxine. There isn't much that can be done at the present time. When he gets his next stim test done, he will also have another U/S done, in order to see if the masses have continued to grow, or if they have stabilized.

I'm hanging in there. I just feel so bad for Corky with everything he's been through.

Hi Terri,

The one thing you may want to keep in the back of your mind is that Trilostane can cause the adrenals to enlarge, so Corky's right adrenal gland measuring 1.9cm x 3cm might be from the Trilostane and nothing more, maybe ask your IMS about this.

I'll be hoping and praying that Corky's next U/S will show that his mass has stabilized...and here I thought you two were off that rollercoaster ride.

Keeping you and Corky in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Lori.

I have a very strong feeling that this is now a never ending roller coaster ride. The one thing that keeps my spirits up is that my Corkster is not showing any signs that any of the results of his U/S are affecting him.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. I'm now hoping that his going back to his previous dose of Soloxine will help to reduce his being so skiddish recently.

I'm now continuing on my quest to find any information I can find about how his growing masses can affect him.

When I was sure that Phillip must have an adrenal tumor I started my reseach by reading what other people do for dogs that have cancer - specifically what makes/need tumors to grow. I guess what I am tyring to say is you might not be able to do something directly to shrink or stunt the grwoth of a mass but indirectly by boosting the immune system through a fresh, gain-free high quality diet, supplementation and avoiding anything that might be taxing to the body in order to for the body to heal or maintain health.

Hi Nathalie,

Thank you for this information. Thank God that cancer has never been brought up with Corky's masses. He does have rice with his two meals a day, as both his vet and his IMS suggested this due to the problems with his stools. This has been ongoing for almost 2 years since he had a very bad bacterial infection. I'm getting totally confused, again, especially since I thought everything was improving.

Hi Everyone,

I'm sorry that I haven't been very active recently, but I was taking a much needed break.

I know it's been awhile since I posted an update on Corky. Due to his increased axiety, being agitated, needing to really cling on to me, and his skidishness recently, Corky is going to be stimmed tomorrow, along with having a full adrenal panel done. He is also going to be having a full blood work-up done, as well as having an U/S done on his liver and his right adrenal gland.

I know that since he is on Trilo, some of his hormones will be elevated, but his IMS feels that the panel should be done. I will also be getting in touch with Dr. Oliver again just to make sure that he is aware of Corky's other medical issues.

Terri,

I think you are very wise to have all of the testing done on Corky. The results of the ultrasound are going to be very interesting to see what's going on with his adrenal tumor. The bloodwork is always a good idea and he needs to have his cortisol checked anyway.

My surgeon is good friends with Drs. Feldman, Nelson and Bruyette. They are all alums and buddies from UC Davis. He thinks it's important to occasionally check the intermediate hormones of any dog who is being treated medically for an adrenal tumor. I hope and pray that the tests show the Corkster is doing A-OK and he has a whole bunch of quality time left with you. Shi sends Corky kisses and says for him to just hang loose and enjoy himself. All the best.

We just got back from the IMS. The U/S should that the mass on Corky's liver and the right adrenal gland stayed just about the same size as they were 1 1/2 months ago. There was no bleeding from them infringing on Corky's blood vessels.

His blood pressure was slightly elevated. It was 178, with a good range being between 160-170. She feels that this was due to Corky's really being stressed out when he went there today. He was shaking and panting heavily, trying to pull away from going inside. This is the first time that he's been like this when he went there.

We have to wait for the rest of the results to determine if his anxiety is due to a medical problem. When I get the results back, I will post them.

Hi Terri,

I am glad that the U/S showed no visible growth from the mass and the adrenal gland, and no bleeding.

A blood pressure of 178 for a stressed pup is pretty good! The last time I had Harley in for his BP check the lab tech took his BP pressure from his rear paw instead. It actually was less stressful on Harley bc she wasn't in his face, so to speak. I mean she's NOT in his face but I mean she was fooling with his back foot and I was diverting his attention away, which was alot easier with her fooling with his back foot instead of his front foot...am I making any sense here??

I'm waiting anxiously with you for the results. Keeping you and Corky in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Lori,

Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. I felt some relief knowing that there were no increases in the sizes and that there was no bleeding.

I just wish that there was something I could do to relieve his stress in these situations. I think I'm now more stressed out than he is. He's really calmed down since he's been home.

You made perfect sense to me.:D Unfortunately, once the Corkster is stressed out, it's not easy to distract him to calm him down. He is a very strong-willed little boy.

I forgot to mention that his weight is down again. He's down to 17.7 pounds. He eats really good, and the weight loss is most likely due to his anxiety levels recently.

I will definietly keep you posted my dear friend.

I really feel good about the U/S results. That was my biggest concern. I'm hoping that we'll be able to find out why he's getting so stressed out recently.

Keep up the good work, my friend! Corky is so lucky to have you on his side! I am sure you will find the reason for his anxiety, too. Have you tried melatonin? Guess I could look back and see but am too lazy. :o Seems like Bach's has some good calming products, too. (Bach's Flower Essences)

Hi Leslie,

I'm heading toward Margaritaville with the both of you.:D:D:D

Thank you for your very kind words.

I have tried Melatonin. A couple of times, it worked to calm him down, but after that it didn't help him. I actually had to give him 1/4 of a pill of Acepromazine on 2 evenings when we had bad wind and heavy rain. It was the only way I could get him to calm down. None of the things I use to do before helped him. He even started to shake and pant very badly when I would set the alarm and when jets were flying over the house. He was never afraid of the alarm and the jets before.

Beth also mentioned Bach's Rescue Remedy. I learned that it works for some dogs and not others. There is also a wrap that has a calming influence on anxiety. One lady also said that she uses an ace bandage to wrap around her dog, and it really works. I guess they feel safer because they can associate it with being back in their mother's womb.

Sorry for being so long-winded. Once we get the rest of the test results back, we can then determine if it is a medical issue or not.

Take care. I hope everything is going better.

Hi all,

I just got the results from Corky's blood work. His electrolytes are well within the normal range. His T4 was 1.3, which it was in December, and that's when his IMS and vet decided to increase his dosage. His IMS feels that I should keep him on the dosage of Soloxine that Corky was taking before the increase, as this had caused some issues for Corky. He's been on the lower dosage since February. His BUN was elevated. It was 40, with a reference range of 6-31.

Now we have to wait for the results from the adrenal panel. We play the waiting game all of the time with our furbabies.

Hi Lori,

I'm pretty pleased with the results. I know his BUN was higher in November. It was 57. Every time it was tested after that it kept dropping, until now. His creatinine level is good.:) It's 0.8, with a reference range of 0.5-1.6. Dr. H. said that we'll just have to keep a careful eye on his BUN.

I know these waiting games are terrible. I won't be concerned if his Aldosterone levels are still super low, since his electrolytes are good.

Hi Everyone,

I just got a call from Corky's IMS. His cortisol level has increased. :( The pre stim was 9.3 and the post was 51ng/ml. She his raising his Trilo dosage to 25 mg once a day. He will now have to go back for a stim test in one month. There is a strong possibility that this is why his anxiety level had increased.

I will be getting a copy of the full adrenal panel results tomorrow morning. When I get the results I will post them along with any comments from Dr. Oliver.

I just got a copy of Corky's adrenal panel results. (first panel results)

Androstenedione ng/ml - Pre - 2.90 (3.97) Post - 4.10 (8.56) Post normal range - 0.24-2.90
Estradiol pg/ml - Pre - 82.7 (80.9) Post - 85.1 (59.3) Post normal range- 23.3-69.4
Progesterone ng/ml Pre - 0.35 (0.07) Post - 3.20 (1.89) Normal post range - 0.22-1.45
17 OHProgesterone ng/ml Pre - 2.13 (1.58) Post - 13.25 (9.93) Normal post range - 0.25-2.63
Aldosterone pg/ml Pre - 14.0 (<11.0) Post - 34.1 (<11) Normal post range - 72.9-398.5

Corky's stim post on the first panel was 21, and this is after he had been on Trilo for 10 days. This last result of 51.0 ng/ml was after he was on Trilo for a little over 5 months.

These results indicate the presence of increased adrenal activity.

Hi Terri,

Dang! I had hoped for much better results on the cortisol. But that could very well explain his anxiety, your vet is right. Let us know if the increase helps with that or not. The tumor seems to be behaving so that is great news to hold on to even tho the cortisol is up a little bit.

I hope you see a much calmer, happier little Corky in a day or two.

Hugs,

Hi Terri,

I went and retrieved your other UTK panel so we could compare them, I also entered the dates...hope this is ok with you.

I got Corky's adrenal panel tests results.

The first number is the baseline followed by the normal range. The next set of numbers are the post ACTH followed by the normal range.
The normal range are the range values for neutered male dogs

Done in October 2009

Cortisol ng/ml <10.0 (2.0-56.5) 21.0 (70.6-151.2)

Andros ng/ml 3.97 (0.05-0.36) 8.56 (0.24-2.90)

Estradiol pg/ml 80.9 (23.1-65.1) 59.3 (23.3-69.4)

Progest ng/ml 0.07 (0.03-0.17) 1.89 (0.22-1.45)

17 OH ng/ml 1.58 (0.08-0.22) 9.93 (0.25-2.63)

Aldoste pg/ml <11.0 (11-139.9) <11.0 (72.9-398.5)

The results indicate presence of increased adrenal activity and indicate presence of adrenal hypofunction.

Dr. Oliver's comments are as follows. I am quoting his words. "The cortisol and aldosterone levels are low, and are likely due to the trilostane. Adrenal tumors also often cause aldosterone levels to be low. The 17-OHP level usually is increased in dogs on trilostane, but part of this is due to cross-reactivity in our assay with pregnenolone precursors that build up in dogs on trilostane. But, estradiol and androstenedione tend to increase when dogs are given trilostane. So, it's difficult to say if the hormone changes are due to the trilostane, or to hypersecretory activity of the tumor. Removal of the tumor would seem to be indicated, but you probably want the dog off of the trilostane for a couple of weeks or so before this is done."

Terri

I think his panel doesn't look too bad, estradiol is coming up and I would keep a check on that. His cortisol is still within Dechra's desired range of 5.4 ug/dl but Corky might feel better with a lower cortisol...all pups ARE different and YOU know your Corky best.

Hi Leslie,

I was also hoping for better results with his cortisol level.

Dr. Oliver had e-mailed me to let me know that his intermediate hormones would most likely be elevated because he has been taking Trilo, so I'm not too concerned by those results, even though some of them were higher than they were on Corky's first adrenal panel.

I hope the increased dosage does help to calm him down. It was windy here last night, and I had to give him his Melatonin. It did help him last night. I just feel so bad for him.

I'll keep you posted on how he is doing.

Hi Terri...

Just popping in before my naptime :)....still hacking over here. I am hoping things will settle down and this is indeed the cause for the increased anxiety. If it helps any, I did notice with Scooter's increased cortisol levels he would also have behavioral changes....anxiety, restlessness, aggression...he even isolated himself which he never ever did in a quiet place away from everyone. Once I linked them together with the cortisol, discussed with my vet who agreed with me, it helped serve as an indicator when things would go off where we wanted them to be. With a high cortisol level, as you know, they always have that fight or flight feeling associated with the increased hormone levels. So, I do think this could very well be why you have been seeing the change with the Corkster.

Everything is crossed for you, my sweet friend....hang in there...

Lots of love and hugs, Beth

I'm sorry I haven't posted for awhile. I just got the results from Corky's 30 day stim test after his increased dosage. His cortisol level is continuing to rise. He is now gong to be taking 31mg a day, split in twice a day dosing. The poor little guy now has cataracts, and he has a redness on his nails where his fur is. His IMS hasn't seen this before, and is going to do some research on it. She said that his nails are good, and the redness isn't bothering Corky. Hi Terri,

Sorry to hear the Corkster is having some problems. Hope the new twice a day increased Trilo dosing schedule will make that climbing cortisol stabilize and stay put! With Munchie I'm almost afraid to even think the thought "what's next" as there is always something next with him. They do keep us on our toes - and yes, I feel the same way - what would we do without them!

Do hope the vet finds an answer to the redness at the nail bed (guess that's what you call it :D). Sorry that on top of rising cortisol and nail issue that he has developed cataracts too - bummer!

Thinking positive thoughts for you and the Corkster.
