Curious if anyone could chime in on this question.

Regarding the excessive thirst in a larger dog would you say that it's better to let them drink a very large quantity all at one time (which in this case is also causing belching from air being swallowed drinking fast and long), or ration it out so that they drink all they want just in smaller quantities over a longer period of time (same amount of water, just not guzzled).

I was wondering if drinking too much all at one time would interrupt a dogs body from properly absorbing needed nutrients and just washing them away.

Thank you for any thoughts on this.

Hi,

If you mean pour some water in the bowl ( not a lot) let the dog drink, wait a minute or two and pour some more, in my opinion I don't see a problem. If you mean pour water in the bowl and wait an hour or more and ration it that way, I, myself, would not be comfortable with that.

My non Cush pup will sometimes drink fast like that and gag and choke.:rolleyes:

Hugs,

Hi and welcome from me too.

Has your dog been diagnosed with Cushing's? If so, please tell us more - timelines, testing, if on any kind of treatment etc.

If your dog has Cushing's excessive drinking is a symptom and actually there really should be no water restrictions as your dog could become dehydrated.

I do not think the excessive water drinking can wash away nutrients IMO, but the gagging and belching should be discussed further with your vet as it could have an effect on digestion and cause added stress to it.

Let us know more :)
